Just want to ask how dangerous it could be to remove the battery while the prophet is still up and running.
There where several cases where my prophet was freezed, so I had to remove the battery.
But it is still running relatively fine. There are some small problems which may be caused by too much software or too many installs and uninstalls or whatever...
This is probably a stupid question, but why not just soft reset?
I never managed to jam a device so badly that the reset button didn't reboot it (it may not boot up completely, but it will try).
I am not sure but I think the reset button actually breaks the circuit which is why it is 100% affective, and if so it is the equivalent of removing the battery and there fore removing battery should be safe.
If you take out the battery all "not saved data" will be lost. You can compare it with your PC. If you are writing something to the "disk" while unplugging the device it may cause serious problems. Otherwise it's no problem.
But like said before.. ..why not use Soft Reset?
This won't generally be a problem, unless you're writing to memory card, in which case you may screw the FAT on the card, causing corrupt files and odd looking directory names. Not advisable, although a soft reset may cause the same damage. Not much difference between the two really.

The power button on the right side (soft reset?) didn't work when it freezed.
dma147: that's not soft reset. I don't know what the Prophet looks like, but on most HTC phones there'll be a little hole (1mm or so across) on the bottom or sides of the device that says reset.
That's the soft reset hole.
V
It's the little tiny hole next to the usb socket. Just poke your stylus in it and the system will reset.
ahhh... that's the soft reset! okay, thanks. So I'll use this then, when it freezes again.

OK, I've not read a word of the manual, so maybe I'm doing something wrong. When I soft reset (stylus in the hole) the screen fade away and then it won't for the love of god restart. The first time I did this, I went a little pale. however, if I take out the battery for around five minutes and then plug it back in, it starts up again. Is this wrong?
Also, never quite been able to hard reset the damned thing. I press and hold the two "__" buttons whilst performing the reset, but the same thing happens and I'm never prompted for screen calibration or anything else I'd expect from a hard reset. SOMEBODY HOLD ME
Can someone please talk me through the EXACT and DETAILED procedure and result both a soft reset and hard reset?
For me, on my MDA Pro:
Soft reset: Insert tip of stylus into "reset" hole briefly. Screen fades away to blank and the machine then acts dead. No buttons will bring it back to life. Take the battery out and plug it back in, still dead. Come back after 30 minutes, still dead. It needs the battery removing for at least 5 minutes, maybe more like 10, then reinserting and it springs back to life.
Hard reset: Hold down the two "__" keys (above the 4 and 9 keys) whilst inserting the stylus tip into the reset hole briefly. Exactly the same thing happens as a soft reset - no hard reset is performed.
I'm pretty sure this is all wrong and my device is "special"
Not Right!!!
Xiasma: This is very wrong indeed. I've got access to the jasjar and Pro and neither one displays what you mentioned on yours. The procedure you described for both types of resets is correct. Try one more time holding down the 2 soft keys '_' for half a second then whilst holding them down push the stylus in the soft reset hole in at the back of the device (if in laptop mode).
If you still don't get a hard reset, I'm quite certain you have a faulty unit.
Let us know how you get on :?
Thanks, your reply is very much appreciated. Well, looks like it's a faulty unit, then. It doesn't really affect my day-to-day use, so I'm tempted to keep it until there's an official rom upgrade, RAM hike or something
have you tried turning the power off (using the...er...power button!) before poking at the reset button...see if that makes any difference?
Any joy with your MDA Pro hard or soft resetting?
xiasma: Have you had any luck with your MDA Pro either soft or hard resetting? I'm interested in knowing for personal reasons also, as I have had to exchange 2 units with t-mobile already, due to what I believe is a very buggy ROM, but I could be wrong and it could be something else. :?
Okay, I'm having a huge problem. Some cheapo program got into my registry, and now I can't even get into Windows (whenever I soft reset, I only get a frozen "i-mate" screen). The problem is that I basically broke my power button, rendering it useless, so now I can't hold it down to do a hard reset.
Are there any other ways of hard resetting the device? This is driving me MAD... not having a phone, blah.
VJEschaton should be able to hard reset it.
V
PS You could use VJKeyPress to replace your power key, and VJEschaton to permit a cold shutdown, putting your system into power off mode (not standby)
You can take off the battery, and wait for your back-up-battery to run dry....(app half an hour)....then everything installed will be deleted almost like a hard-reset...You can also get a hold of Shut-xp ( free russian software) this have an option to hard-reset your device...hope this helps...
After removing the battery, you could avoid the half an hour or so wait by shorting all the pins of the battery connector with a paper clip or a piece of wire. When the pins are shorted, the phone will undergo a hard reset.
@aNiMeMaN14, I have been using my phone like you, without the power button.

when u place the back of the magician there is a nob which will press the button on the right side of back to let magician start up
this button present in a hole (L shape hole)
at all u need to remove the back and place something in this hole so the button will be always pressed
u will wait untill ur magician coming with the frozen screen u talked about.now remove the battery while keeping that button is pressed without even try to use the power button
when u next place the battery after a while u will find that hard rest is already done
i hope this is was clear enough
i'm always on the forum for any questions
hope u success try
best regards
I think everyone knows the differences between hard and soft reset but my question today is different from what usually have been asked here:
A) performing a soft reset (by pushing the side small reset button with the stylus) or
B) turing off the wizzy ( by using the top button) and then turining it on again has any difference?
is it A) truncate any process, file, reg and therefore its not clean procedure ?
by performing several times A) it has any consequences ?
the question can be silly but sometimes i'm silly
They both do the same thing. The only difference is one asks you "are you sure" 1st and the other one just does it
I don't think there are any consequences in performing a soft reset several times in a row; although I don't see why anyone would want to do that unless they like their boot screen 8)
thanks
my question is because a soft reset without question i was think can cut some process suddenly bypassing some internal procedure...
but maybe im thinking too much
just trying to know better my Wizard
Actually there is a difference. Any updates you have recently done to the registry will be lost of you reset with your stylus. If you reset with the "off button" the changes will be flushed to disk before shutdown.
I have also lost recently received SMS messages when I reset with my stylus. This has never happened when I reset with the "off button" so I assume the same "disk buffer flushing" is the cause of this as well.
And d yes, I reset a lot but not because I like my boot screen
what is the difference in the following:
clean storage, soft reset (turning phone off) and that red button near the battery
clean storage is a hard reset... ie it wipes all data from your device returning it to factory settings.
soft reset (which can be achieved any number of ways) and the red reset button do the same thing.... reboot the device.
the red reset button is completely redundant imo and i have no idea why HTC put it on the device as it is easier and quicker to simply take the battery out and replace it.
If they really wanted a reset button they should have made it easier to press (ie/ without a pin)

in theory you shouldn't do that when the phone is on, it can (in theory remember) cause sparks that can affect the internals. personally I've yet to try using the red button, seems the prefect size for pressing with a stylus.

correct theory... but in practice... ive been doing just that on every mobile phone ive ever had =)
Switching off the phone and after a few seconds switching it on again acts also as a soft reset, so no need for third party apps, red button or battery and it is safe also.
Except that most of the times I need to soft reset it's because the phone is frozen, so no way to switch off

Fortunately I never encountered that problem (untill now at least).
I have discovered pulling the battery on my phone causes my email accounts to lose their pop and smtp addresses. Using the red button doesnt. Also when pulling the battery my router security code is gone too.
I tried to do a hard reset on my phone by holding down the hardkeys on the phone and when prompted by the device to confirm at the "Are you sure you want to format?" screen, the softkeys were not functional: neither the windows "confirm" nor the back "cancel". Anyone else see this or know why it is?
I do have a really thin screen protector on my phone but I would hate to remove it and it seems a really unlikely cause, as I have never had any other problems with it.
In the end I used the dial-a-reset option, but this makes me nervous since I just added a microSD to the Focus. If I ever have problems with the card it seems like my phone will be bricked since I won't be able start the phone to do a hard reset.
That's not normal. The screen protector can't affect the soft keys or if it does it's hardly perceivable (under 1%).
Is this consistent if you try it (soft buttons not working)? You can also perform a hard reset from Settings/About.
You could try removing the card and see if it happens without it? Make sure you re-format the card in a Symbian phone to be able to re-use it again, because when you'll perform a hard reset without the card in, the card becomes unreadable in the phone and has to be formatted again.
