defective 8125 - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I just got mty 8125 last week and already dead.Any one seen this, my screen keeps wiggin out. Some times it stays this way even after a soft reset.

anyone ever seem this before

Nothing to worry if its new and within the 30 day period -- Cingular will replace it.
Mine was worst -- it just hang on the boot screen.
Called Cingular CS and had the phone replaced -- had to ordeal a 45 min conversation though as I was getting passed back and forth. Had to call 4 times as well =(
Follow-up if broken phone that I sent back was received ( found out that still the replacement phone wasnt ordered -- turns out they need to order one again -- charge you for the cost -- refund you when they get the broken phone -- so that's like buying another *new phone )
So give like a $400 space on your credit card for that =) and double check if they received the broken phone too -- drat I need to do that =(
Cheers

Wow, that is absolutely not like my experience with Cingular Warranty Replacement.
My touchscreen developed a deadspot right in the middle of the screen (thank MS for Voice Command or I'd never have been able to make calls). I contacted Cingular and they shipped me a replacement phone right away. I had it in 2 days! They warned me that if they didn't receive my old phone within 14 days then they would charge my account for the cost of an 8125 ($450.00).

hi kyphur -- off topic a bit
how/where did you get a replacement protection? the phone insurance from cingular doesnt cover the 8125 as posted in http://www.cingular.com/customer_service/equipment_protection
thanks

No replacement protection, it was covered under the Manufacturer's Warranty 1 year warranty. Since I opted for regular shipping it didn't cost me a dime (I could have got next day for $10.00)

Looks good - Another T-Mobile page still shows the Vario with Co-Pilot on this tariff at £119.99
Yeah , it is under "special offers" - look under the "300 mins for £14.50 for 12 months" deals
Thanks joker3001 ! just ordered one
Was looking for a reason to buy a Wizard anyway (or at least something to justify it to the wife  ) and the Sat Nav does just that !
Soon , the battle between the Universal & the Wizard will commence - pending a T-moble credit check of course
Cheers dude
Is this phone any different from the SX56?
I just installed the XDA ROM software into my SX56 and unlocked the AT&T phone which now accepts TMobile (the phone accepts my SIM card and TMobile made a call to me which came in). I am paying $19.95 a month and have had the service for about eight years
The problem I am having is that my phone screen now doesnt respond properly: Touching it causes the backlight to go on but most of the keys dont do what one would expect them to do: The phone turns on with a reminder from the calendar on the screen which wont DISMISS or CLOSE. Pressing on the windows logo and then on the phone key causes the calendar to come up and I am not sure which numbers are entered when I do manage to get the phone to come onto the screen (none of the right hand numbers seem to work at all). Does anyone recognise these symptoms and/or could they just show that my SX56 needs the ROM RE-flashing? I should add that pressing the Master Reset button with this ROM in place seems to make the phone shut off and then when you restart it, all of the data remains in place. I wonder if there is any possibility that the XDA ROM has prevented the reset button from working normally?
But then I saw this ad: The SDA site implies that all these phones are the same under the skin although an article written in 2002 http://wiki.xda-developers.com/uploads/tmobile-pocketpc.pdf implies that the manufacturer was coming out with some different processor at that stage and that the processor in the Wallaby was then already obsolete: Does anyone know if this phone represents any advance on the SX56 or is it newer or is my phone exactly the same as this one or is my SX56 actually better? (I already have the COPILOT software independently). Or is it just the same walllaby in a different casing which TMobile are tyring to get rid of because the manufacturer is as uncooperative iwth them as they are with anyone else?
Anybody had any luck with this?
I just called T-Mobile sales to ask what was included with the Copilot kit and was told that they are not honouring this offer due to a mistake. Worth a try anyway?
Mistake, but IS this phone any different from the SX56?
What the mistake was may be relevant: I just called them and they said they WERE although they had at first said that the CoPilot was extra and wasnt included with the price. I didnt take it any further as I couldn't figure out whether the phone they are offering is any different to the one I already have

Sounds like the digitiser is up the swanee - have you tried recalibrating it?

It's a completely different phone. The Vario is an HTC Wizard with T-Mobile branding. There's plenty of info on this site on the differences between models.

Never heard of Google, or even http://wiki.xda-developers.com/?
Pricing mistake
The sales chap I spoke to said that the free Copilot offer only applies to other phones - it should cost £120 with the Vario. However, he said he works for direct sales, not the web sales team, so advised me to give it a go anyway, which I have done. It's before the 7.30pm cutoff for next day delivery, so I'll give you an update tomorrow...

Their "mistake" excuse is weak - if it is, why haven't they taken the page down?
It clearly states on that page Vario with co pilot. Whats the problem ? Get it bought
Re: Is this phone any different from the SX56?
"Sounds like the digitiser is up the swanee - have you tried recalibrating it?"
Not sure how to reclalibrate it but the problem appears to be that I dropped it and 10-12 vertical black lines started appearing to the right hand edge of the screen. Sometimes they are there, sometimes not. THere is usually at last one there somewhere. At about that time the screen stopped responding as I mention. Today the left third started displaying the same veritcal lines, though spaced quite far apart (about a millimetre). Screen doesn't APPEAR cracked: Does this sound like a digitiser and if so, how do you recalibrate it please or is there a link to somewhere on the XDA site which I cant find which might tell me? Or could it be the cable loose in the circuit board? As you touch the lower right hand corner of the metal casing where the vertical lines are, those lines flash (the right 10 or 12) on and off and every coloured bar everywhere on the screen or word of text has vertical lines on it even if the white parts don't??
(BTW FWIW I am in New York and couldn't take advantage of the .co.uk offer but was just wondering how they could give the unit away so cheap unless it was essentially the same as the 2002 units which are described on the XDA site)
Success! (I think)
Just checked my email on arriving home and my order has been confirmed by T-Mobile so it should be with me tomorrow. Still odd that they show it at £120 on one page and free on another, but I'm not complaining!
Re: Is this phone any different from the SX56?
@licensedtoquill - to me it sounds like you've dislodged the connections to the screen. Youcould try taking the thing apart and reseating it, but it's a delicate job and not for someone who's not used to dealing with miniature electronics. Might be work looking for a repair facility - PPC Techs have a good reputation.
As for why the phones are so cheap over here, the network operators will do anything to get you signed up to a contract, as that's where they make their money. It's easy to get a free top line phone if you chose the right contract. Especially one like this which locks you in for 18 months as opposed to the normal 12. They're banking on the fact that even with the 300 free voice minutes, you'll still ramp up the bill with SMS and GPRS over the life of the contract. That's why they put the unlimited half price rental "loyalty" bonus at the end to make sure you stick out the full term.
Mine is confirmed too - should be here before one tomorrow
The Guy on the phone (had to phone to confirm some details) said the deal was so good that they (the web sales team) were all snapping them up too , and that the deal was subject to stock , and that stock of the copilot kits would probably be exhausted by the end of today
No mention of a mistake at all
@zoidster: what time did you order yours? I needed one and did not have the time to order w/o co-pilot earlier in the day and this looked too good to be true. I got confirmation around 9:30PM UK and hope the stock is not finished yet.
It was about 4.30pm mate - mind you , in "sales speak" a few left probably means several thousand
If your order was confirmed & they charged you the £5.99 for next day delivery then I'd guess they had stock left
Thanks, I got confirmation and should be with me tommorrow.
Thanks for the link, saved me 50 quid.
Got mine !
yesterday , I managed to navigate to the deal via the homepage
tried again this morning and the same deal is now £199 !
Does this package come with a gps receiver as well??

touch screen not working

the exec's touch screen has stopped working ie not accepting any input via pen finger fist or other...
took it into the o2 store who would like to send away for up to a month under its limited warranty.
is it quicker to send it direct or how should i play it?
its my main phone and i also use/d it for tomtom and i have not quite managed to get that working without screen input...
if its direct has anyone got an address?
thanks...
neal
o2's XDA helpline number should be in your limited warranty statement booklet you got with the phone. In case you didn't file it away safely it's 0808 100 3427
Richard
i have visited the shop and i am not happy with the outlook, i would like it repaired quicker i thought it would be quicker to post it on direct as o2 would just get me to take it in then they will post it on..
I have a similar problem. The battery life on my exec is crap. It runs down like 25% at night when it is switched off. I went into the o2 store and they wanted to take the battery away for testing which would take like 28 days. In the meantime they wouldnt supply me with a replacement phone as I hold onto my phone and only hand in the battery. I thought it would be simple to get a replacement. I was wrong.

Dropped my 8125 - its done

I dropped my fone from the second floor to the first - but luckily the corner of the phone stopped it from hurting the floor any more. It hit the corder where the stylus is and now the screen looks a liitle raised from the keyboard. When I turn it on, it only shows me a white screen.
2 Questions:
1 - can I fix it
2 - can I get another one from Cingular (and how)
I know that I do not have protection on my phone since Cingular will not protect phones that cost more than $300 (when if you think about it, those are the phones you need to protect) Does anyone know how I can get another phone from Cingular without paying?
Thanks

getting one without paying isnt going to happen, especially since it shows obvious signs of user inlficted damage. you need to start saving up for your next phone purchase.
So Should I go ahead and try to open it up and see if I can fix anything in it?
In my opinion, I think the LCD is broken, or it could be just the connection loose where the LCD connects to the mainboard. Goodluck!

there is a place called www.safeware.com where you can insurace your PDA for about 60 bucks a year... check it out
you may get another from ebay for $400
if the screen and motherboard are not broken, try to get Dopod 838 housing assembly, and replace the housing
So I opened up the entire phone and only found that the InfraRed lens broken off. I don't see where else it is broken. I had everything apart except the screen from the face of the phone. I took off the back by taking the screen off of the guide rails.
I made sure the connections between the screen and the board where secure. With the phone completely open, I tried to turn it on and still got a white screen.
When I plug in the power, the orange light doesn't light up.
I think I'm up a certain creek without a paddle.
Here is an update:
I called Cingular and all they could offer me was the number to the manufacturer HTC (877-878-6944)
HTC sends me to their repair center (888-354-2375)
So I am sending my busted phone to them and here is how the process works:
They get your CCard # to have on file. You send the phone in your own package, your cost. They will get it, diagnose the problem and give you an estimate of cost. If you approve the cost, then they will charge your card for the repair plus $27.80 for return shipping. If you do not approve the cost then they will charge you $27.80 and return you your busted phone.
I'll keep you posted to the cost estimate.
10/26/06 - HTC calls me up and says that my unit will cost $169 to repair and I go ahead and authorize it.
10/30/06 - HTC Ships out my unit and I should get it 11/2
Jesus, 169!
wait wait..u mean to tell me there's no warranty on this device? not even a year?
I don't know how HTC works, but I used to own a couple of HP PDA and PDA phones...and if there's any kind of problem, hardware, software, or even if I dropped the device and broke it (which I did a couple of times), I call the warranty department (of course I had to lie and told them I never damanged it), but then they send me a new PDA on UPS Next day right away with no charge to me..and I send them back my old PDA postage paid....
I don't get it..why can't u do the same with HTC? Like I was wondering earlier...is there no warranty? Coz if there isn't, I'm returning my 8125.
And the Saga ends.
Yesterday got my phone and tested everything to make sure it works. Turns out that they actually do fix what you send them instead of just swapping it out. My case was cracked near the corner and you can see where they repaired the crack.
So there you have it.
- There is a warranty for factory defects, not dropping your phone

There is a 1 year warranty through Cingular but it does not cover lose or physical damage, only defects in the product.
My touchscreen developed some issues after about 3 months of use. It was replaced under warranty.
If you drop and break it your warranty is voided. This is pretty standard, insurance covers loss & accidental damage.

Screen Alignment - T-Mobile returns policy

After reading through the faq and seeing that the screen alignment issue is a hardware problem and won't be solved with a ROM upgrade as I had hoped. I just wondered if anyone had spoken to T-Mobile about this and what there response is. Will they replace the device for one that doesn't have the problem how did later (serial no devices fix the problem? (Mine is a HT 634 Vario II)
(The SA issue has proved to be a huge problem for me and almost makes the device unusable).
it was such a common problem I'm sure T-Mobile will replace the unit. Get them phoned, get new handset, get happy!
Sent my device back to T-mobile and it was replaced but soon had SA problem back.
Contated them again and they gave me the option to send it to HTC, i did this and got the same device back but with new LCD and since no SA problems.
I was within the number of days from purchase (forget how many), and they replaced my device immediately. Had to go to CS and after checking that I'd tried soft reset etc, they put me through to tech dept who checked the same thing, but the upshot was, they couriered a new phone to me at work and I gave them the old one and kept the new one. A1 service.
I had no problem at all with T-mobile when I got the screen alignment problem. They were really helpful and did the same as the last post, sent a replacement by courier and collected the faulty one at the same time. I was two weeks into the contract and they told me that their policy is to give a replacement if the contract is under 30 days. After that I think you have to send it away for repair.

8525 HELP LCD has no backlight

have hermes 100 that has no backlight on the lcd every thig works on phone but no adjustments make any difference have flashed ATT ROM and then schap's then Black magic but still no backlight even after Hard reset any help would be great have even tacken ohone apart and can't find any thig wrong is it possible that the light is burned out this is my guina pig hermes have my good one still working
So what was the outcome? I've got the same situation with my WM6-8525. Worked fine at 11:30am, by 12:30 backlight was dead.
Dan
My outcome is as follows:
1. Call AT&T
2. Wait for call-back on alternate line
3. Perform a few basic tasks (type this, read number etc...)
4. Master Reset
5. Remove battery, verify no water or physical damage
6. Accept terms audibly for warranty replacement
7. Agree to $12 "I want it as soon as possible" shipping upgrade
8. Wait for new "bare-bones" phone to arrive (will re-use back cover, battery, SIM, stylii)
8a... FIND INFORMATION ABOUT INSURANCE FOR REPLACEMENT PHONE!!! as the replacement does not extend the warranty more than 90 days past original warranty expiration...
I fell in the <365 day warranty category!
My call was answered almost immediately [call-back happened while I stayed on the line], the person on the other end was VERY articulate and well spoken. I don't believe he was "programmer knowledgable" about the 8525, but I don't expect that... provided I get my replacement by the weekend, I will say I am a 100% satisfied customer!
Dan
And my last post on this subject...
I received my new 8525 today [5-1]. of course, now I'm back down to WM5, so I'll probably be upgrading / re-installing the rest of the day
