do a search in the networking it forum
with something like
"<your cellphoen company name> AND GPRS"
what settings and how to set it up for different cellphone company have been asked 10000's of times and answered

Hello all
Can any walk me through a set up on the XDA for a vodafone dial-up internet connection. My SIM card doesnt support GPRS and out boss thinks GPRS is too pricey, so I am stuck using dial-up for the time being. The problem is there seems to be conflicting info on the internet about how to set it up... and most of that is for a Nokia phone.
I am sure someone is out there who can help me out...
Thanks! 8)

Have you not tried the Vodafone web site (I'm assuming they support GSM dial up to their web service).
Alternatively, you may want to consider using O2 Mobile Web via GSM longcode.
Optimises http, so can be quite tolerable for PDA friendly web sites and light email usage.
Settings:
Dialup +447712932932
DNS1 193.113.200.200
DNS2 193.113.200.201

Forgot to mention that username and password can be anything, but not left empty.

Thanks. Those numbers worked like a charm.
I will also contact Vodafone and ask them for the dial-up access.

Hi, got a new XDA Exec on 02 and am trying to work out how to get connected to the internet and email. Anyone got any recommendations for a good ISP? What is everyone else using?
Thanks for any help and happy new year!
hi!
happy new year to you too!
your ISP is actually your mobile carrier.... in your case, if you bought the exec from o2, then o2 are the isp
on an o2 exec, they are pre-configured for gprs or 3g internet access out of the box on the o2 network......providing you have used a sim that has data facilities enabled.....just click on the internet explorer icon and it should connect automatically
if you are using someone else's sim (i think the exec comes sim unlocked) then you will need to maually create the connections for that mobile provider (start, settings, connections, add new connection)
www.filesaveas.com/gprs.htm is a good source for all the major mobile providers settings
if you are connecting via wifi, then that is governed by the wifi device.....in hotspots it generally is pay as you go (btopenzone, tzones etc) but obvioulsy a home it is just picking up your home wifi connection
hope this helps!
Thanks!
Thanks for your help! I can now connect to the internet! I used the 02 settings. Also discovered the joy of there being Wifi at the station when the trains were cancelled but wasn't able to log on as it didn't accept the phone number it asked for when selecting O2 as the provider for some reason. Haven't worked out how to get email yet either but that's my next challenge!
Thanks again
I originally posted this message a few days ago but as there were no responses I thought I'd try again. I'd appreciate any advice - thanks for looking ...
I have a XDA mini S. At home I have a wireless router/hub that is hard connected to my PC, but I connect to internet from my laptop via wifi (direct to router/hub) using an always on broadband connection.
I use WPA security, but when I tried to set up the XDA to connect wifi it didn't seem to have the ability to enter the WPA settings.
Ideally I'd like to use the XDA to network with the PC and the laptop for file transfers, but if I can't do that, at least I'd want to enable the XDA to access the inernet via the router/hub directly (ie without the other devices being turned on).
Can anyone help with this please - I know from other postings on this site that I'm not the only sufferer, but I haven't see a definitive solution.
Thanks
Charles
Make sure wireless is ENABLED.
Then
START->SETTINGS->CONNECTIONS->NETWORK CARDS
Click the "Wireless" Tab
Add a new connection
General Tab
Network Name: "MyNetwork" (or whatever you want)
Connects to: "The Internet" ("Work" also works for me)
Network Key Tab
Authentification: WPA-PSK
Network Key: "makeUpAKeyHere_thats-long&complex" (I use plenty of ££%!* type characters in mine)
802.1x Tab
Uncheck Use IEEE 802.1x network access control
All done!
Now make sure you have EXACTLY the same Network Key in your router and you should be good to go.
Now to connect to your PC & Laptops you use Resco Explorer 2005 (you'll need to buy it but worth every penny!) to MAP shares from your network.
How to is in This Thread
Worked for me, and I've only had my Mini S (my first PDA ever) a week!
Good luck!
Mark.
I just got my MDA Vario (same as XDA Mini S right?) today and the manual has absolutely nothing about connecting over wi-fi to *anything* let alone my home wi-fi router but I was pleased to find this thread , for a while
START->SETTINGS->CONNECTIONS->NETWORK CARDS
Click to collapse
doesn't have a "wireless" tab (or any tabs for that matter) but it does offer me a list of adapters to let me modify settings (no option to add one though).
The nearest thing to wi-fi is "SDIO WLAN Wireless Adapter" but I'm pretty sure that would relate to something plugged in to the SDIO slot, and not the built in Wi-Fi hardware. Am I wrong?
I've fumbled around a bit and found one screen which offers a view where I might be able to enter the details you've given here, but the textboxes are all locked/readonly (empty) and I can't write anything in them.
I'm really disappointed so far.
the sdio card is the correct one, the wizard has an sdio wifi card inside I believe.
if you select network card under settings-connections you should be able to add a new connection there, if in doubt search for wifi connection, or post back here for more help, good luck

I got a PM about this thread, I thought I'd reply here to as the info could help others....In additon othres may be able to elaborate more on the 802.1 query
Mark,
I had the same problem regarding my mini s which you recently answered. I have a US robotics wireless router (9108) and connect it to my laptop (Thinkpad X31) using WPA-PSK and TKIP - the laptop does not allow me to check 802.1 which I understand is for large companies with a special server.
With my miniS I have found that as soon as I enter authentication WPA-PSK and encyption TKIP, the system automatically ticks 802.1 and I cannot access the page to turn it off.
I have tried communicating with O2 via email but they haven't really helped. What I want to know is whether on your machine with WPA-PSK and TKIP you can turn off 802.1 in which case mine has a fault and I can swap it - otherwise I have to find another smart phone!

Hi there, I'm a new user of these phones and understand little of Networking but I'll share my settings with you...
Under "Configure Wireless Network" I have:-
Under "General" Tab I have:-
Network Name: MyNetwork
Connects To: Work
Under "Network Key" Tab I have:-
Authentification: WPA-PSK
Data Encryption: TKIP
{Greyed Out} The key is automatically provided
Network Key:- ABCDE1234&*^ <- Whatever key you make up
{Greyed Out} Key Index: 1
Under "802.1x" Tab I have:-
Ticked use IEEE 802.1x network access control
(I can't change this.)
However on my domestic Netgear DG834G router everything connects just fine, g or b. Have you flashed your phone to the latest O2 firmware?
Mine is
ROM 2.21.4.1 WWE
ROM Date 3/9/06
Radio Version 02.07.10
Protocol Version 413.1.03
ExtROM Version:- 2.21.4.101
I hope this helps,
Mark.
PS. I'll post this in the thread too, it may help others.
hello
i recently purchased the xda mini s and a wifi usb adaptor. i am having trouble accessing the internet. my computer connects to the internet using ethernet to my wall (im not sure where it goes from there). i can connect my phone to a peer to peer wifi network but it does not let use the internet, could anyone help me with the settings please i would greatly appreciate it.
many thanks

To achieve that you need to set your primary connection as shared in network connections. Once you do that, adhoc mode should be possible without issue.
Please help - similar problem
Hi - I have an XDA Mini S and have connected without issue to the Internet via my router (Wirelessly of course).
The issue I have is that I cannot connect to any network shares on my PC. When I had a CF wireless card in my Ipaq I could do without issue. I have downloaded a ping proggy to XDA and can ping router but cannot ping the PC I have the shares on.
Normally (If I was using a laptop) I would check Workgroup/Domain settings, authentication credentials etc...nothing like this on XDA.
Please help

Quick - fix
I have spent hours messing around with this - however I have had a similar problem with a corporate laptop which wouldn't work.
I changed the router from WPA to WEP and bang - worked straight away. Exactly the same on my XDA Exec so should be same for Mini S (pocket PC 2005).
Hope this helps.
unable to find network wifi
i am using o2 xda mini s to connect my laptop via wifi for transferring files.
it shows the connections status excellent on both devices with ip address 169.254.72.236 on ppc and 169.254.130.63 on laptop.
i used laptop ip address as gateway address on ppc network wifi adaptor setting.
using ping with this ip(169.254.72.236) from laptop it shows success. but can't share folders and transfer files. when i try to open the pah from the file explorer in ppc or laptop it says 'unable to find network that support this ip address' either by entering the name of computer or by entering ip address
help me in using this facility.
MDA Wifi Wont Connect
Hi there-I have an mda vario which I was able to unlock as it was locked to t-mobile and I am with another network. After ages I was able to get a connection to my router or at least it says that it is connected. However I still cant connect to the net via wifi on my mda. I have put in the settings for wpa and wpa-psk, etc have unticked the 802.1x box etc but still no joy. Can anyone help?
Thanks

Hi all, new here, thanks for the info posted, was useful but i'm still having problems with the wifi on my xda mini s to my netgear dg834gt router with sky broadband.
The problem seems to be that my xda finally connected to my broadband and router, but now when I try to use internet explorer on my xda I just get
"400 Bad Request"
"Bad filename."
Can anyone help with this? Thanks in advance

Google is a wonderful thing.....
I have two problems that are driving me to distraction. 1) I cannot find anybody that can tell me the correct settings for Mini xda connecting to my Wi-Fi wanadoo livebox. I have tried calling Wanadoo and O2 without success. I have tried connecting via WEP and entering the long 24 digit network key, but there is only space for 20 digits on the XDA.. Secondly I cannot disable GPRS as a default - apparently there is no way to do this apart from deleting the GPRS settings and I'd rather not. Any help/guidance gratefully received !!
Haven't got an answer for you on the Wanadoo question, but my livebox arrives in a couple of weeks so I'll keep an eye on this thread.
For your other question, my xda mini s will select wireless ahead of GPRS if it has a good enough connection. It only defaults to GPRS when wireless is off or not a strong enough connection. Sometimes, I think that it should be choosing wireless, but more often than not I find that the wireless connection has dropped out.
Does yours not work this way?
Mini XDA Wi-Fi
Hi
Your configuration sounds great, I cannot test this at the moment because I cannot get connected to the Wi-fi livebox. The livebox keeps asking me for a network key - I use the WEP key from the base of the livebox but it still will not connect, I have it set as WEP Shared access but to no avail. (Ironically my laptop connects OK to the livebox using WPA-PSK protocol, even though wanadoo tell me it will only work with WEP)
Unfortunately O2 do not support Wi-Fi and Wanadoo (orange) do not support mobile devices - so there is no help from anywhere.
Getting over the GPRS always connecting is quite easy, just set up a dummy network and get the browser to point to that when opening instead of the GPRS. However as I cannot get access to Wi Fi I cannot see if my xda operates in the same way as yours. I am just hoping that someone out there uses an xda via Wanadoo(Orange) and can give me the settings.....
Ok, I don't know about the Wanadoo, haven't seen this device until today (looks interesting though) but here is what I know about WEP/WAP keys on PPC devices:
You have to type the hex values, even if you are using a pass phrase on the router (the Wanadoo in your case).
Also XDA mini (Wizard?) should be able to connect with WAP-PSK so why not try same settings as your laptop.
Just a thought.
Thanks for the advice, however I have just had a breakthrough and it is now working great. I had to go into the router config settings and temporarily switch off the security settings. This proved to me that the XDA could accept WIFI, when I switched the security back on I entered the open access WEP key into the XDA and amazingly it worked!! Even better is that it seems to auto default to WI-FI when in range and GPRS when out of range. Lets hope it stays that way!!
