Hi all,
As above really. Everything was working this morning. I then used the hands free to listen to a voice mail in the office. Next time I went to use it with out the head set - nothing. the loud speacker also doesn't work but hands free still does.
Any ideas? Have a changed some secret setting while it was in my pocket or something?
Cheers,
Dunc
Had that problem with my Jornada 928 back in the day. For me, I just inserted and took out the 3.5mm headphone socket thing a few times. It seemed to think that there was a headphone device attached and diverted the sound through the headphone port instead of the loud speaker. Hope that works out for you.
Euan
Ok, thanks!
I'll give that a try and report back!
I had the same problem when i loaded SKYPE and changed the setting in skype to enable better sound clarity though the head set. then when i took off the head set everything was dead..no sound from the speaker or the loudspeakers. i had to use the headset if i needed to make calls or do anything with sound on my machine. finally i figured out that the setting in Skype disabled my loudspeakers etc.
so if you have any common software or stuff like Skype i suggest u look at the setting.
cheers
Venk
Thanks Venk,
Not added any other software and have checked the settings so not sure. Will go to O2 today and see what they have to say.
Thanks,
Dunc
try to hard reset and that should slove the problem if not go to your service and ask them to investigate. as i know there should'nt be any hardware damage and this is only a problem becasue of the setting that you have made. anyways take care and wish u all the best.
regards
Venkat

I wish it was that simple, but alas I tried a lot , and it looks like I might have a faulty one unless anyone got an idea
I find it hard to believe that it's a hardware issue if both the external speakers and the headphones don't work at the same time yet the ringtones do work.....
I hope it's something simple and you don't have to resort to a phone return.
No Sound
Has any one found a solution for this problem, as I have the exect same issue. All sounds on exec dont work execpt when receiving an incoming call, when call is answered cant hear a thing, does work though with headset.
Have tested and sms, mms etc sound doesnt work, movies and music doesnt work either.
This is not going to help  but I had a similar problem a few months ago on my XDA2. Phone rang, I tried to answer it, but couldn't hear a thing. No other sounds worked. Headphone worked perfectly. Soft resets achieved nothing.
Thought my XDA2 had died after 18 months of service, but then suddenly an hour later it all started working again and did from then on.
I have no idea why this happened or whether I did anything to fix it, but the problem isn't unique to the Universal.
I'm running PocketZenPhone. Maybe that could be interfering with the sounds somehow? Dunno.
Edit: I doubt it's a hardware problem so I definitely wouldn't risk sending my shiny Exec back to O2's monkeys for them to replace with another broken one. Did you try a hard reset? I didn't on the XDA2 but maybe it'd help. :?:
Try this...
Maybe you should try this, I use it in order to transfer all the sounds (including music) to the BT Headset when I am at the gym:
-Get Total Commander
-Go to the registry editor
-Tap or search for this directory: \\\registry\HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\VoiceCommand\
-Change the value of the String LaunAPEnable to value "0".
-Now press and hold the main button on the headset (the one you use to answer calls and transfer the call to the speaker of the Universal) and try if this worked.
-If you succeed or not revert the value of the string back to "1" or you will not be able to use VoiceCommand.
Hope this can help you.
Problem SOLVED. No sound
I had the same issue with my Jasjar. When you plug in the headphones it turns off the speakers except for incoming ring tones. The inside of the ear jack got stuck. I had to take apart the unit and bend the clip. It contacted so that it didnt' think there was a headphone inserted. I don't ever remebering plugging in a headphone to even have cause this problem. Its just a very loose contact. So when you get in there you bend it to make it stronger. You will understand once you have it apart.
I've been using Dopod 818 pro since the end of December 2005. A week ago, a problem suddenly came up. The speaker of this PPC does not work anymore.
I tried to play music using windows media player, or real player -> Does not work
I tried to use the speaker phone -> Does not work
I can't even hear anything when I make a call or receiving a call
It works when I plug in the headset. everything works perfectly.
It plays the ringtone when someone call me. (Very soft sound)
Is this a hardware problem? or is there anyway that I can do to fix it.
I bought the phone overseas (I'm located in Australia now). It takes a lot of effort to send it overseas for warranty.
Thank you
Do a soft-reset. If that doesn't help, do a hard-reset. If that doesn't work , do a ROM re-install. If it still doesn't help, then you have a faulty unit.
I've done soft reset
I haven't done hard reset
->haven't had any backup program.
Is there any free solution for backup software?
Thanks
i ve solution
well for this solution u must disassemble the phone. look at the handsfree jack and apply a jumper to the two front points of the connector. it will solve ur problem

I've had this problem, what I did was play music using headphone and suddenly unplug the jack. The Speaker works again like charm.

dopod 818 pro speaker issues
I have run into the same issue with my 818 pro and my Himalaya...The fix is always uninstalling one or more applications that may be causing the problem. I assure you it's very unlikely that it is a hardware issue...Uninstall all applications and you should get the sound back..
I have the same problem with my 818 pro. I have already done the hard reset-no change, tried blowing air in and out through the headphone jack, silicone spray and playing with the plug. It appears to be a hardware issue with the sensor mechanism inside so it always thinks it has a headset connected--poor design.
Did anyone else figure out a solution for this (other than returning for repair?) This happened to me this weekend. Suddenly happened after I was using the headphone for an hour while I was rollerblading. Now I can't answer any calls without either the bluetooth or standard headphone. I can hear the ring go off, but just can't use it as a regular handset. I'm sure everyone agrees that this is a hardware issue with a poorly built headphone jack. But while I'm waiting for the retailer to restock the dopod 818 and send me a replacement, does anyone know of a hack that would allow the phone to activate the headphone AND the phone speaker simutaneously? The reasoning is I think the phone currently thinks there is a headset constantly being plugged in, so it deactivates the loud speaker as well as the phone speaker. But if there is a hack that lets WM5 to use the handset speaker and the headphone jack simutaneously, then at least I can answer phone calls without having to use the headset. Of course, this won't be a permanent solution, but it may bridge me through these tough times with the dopod.
I have to say, I still love this phone, but my patience is wearing a bit thin. First, it's the disappearing SD card (which I'm not even sure if it's solved yet), then I was having some problems with sending MMS messages, now this. :x
I had the speaker problem with my Jam. It is apparently a common problem with PPC phones, the mechanical switch in the headphone jack gets stuck. I was able to get mine to work again by plugging in the headphone jack a few times. If that doesn't solve the problem...well you know the drill
There is nothing to do but exchange it--I was never able to find a work around either. Sorry.
I had problem the speaker on my HTC Charmer. I send it for repair and they replaced the speaker, with in like a week+.
However, now there are some other problems. It seems that when I try to use the speaker (play songs, phone, games, etc), the battery drain like mad and the unit gets very hot. The unit drain so much energy that the battery will die off even if I had the unit on AC power. Going to send it back to repair AGAIN!

I had the exact same problem and suddenly unpluging the jack works for me..
this "sudden unplugging" thing won't work with Prophet, the Prophet's buzzer(speaker) problem is very common, the same thing happened to me, cost me 12$ in iran to change that part
818pro speaker problem Hardware related
I had the same problem.
Speaker unit in phone burns out very quickly.
If you have warranty - your lucky.
In my case since I bought in Singapore and Use in Israel, I had to fork out 50USD to get a new speaker unit.

What you do is open the Comm Manager, tap the "phone" icon to set to flight mode. Then, turn on again.... that should do the trick
I don't know what planet most of you guys are on.
The Prophet has a common problem with the rear speaker - it's a hardware issue as X_Farhad has pointed out.
There's no need to hard reset, and what's the crap about flight mode?
Yes, some can have a problem with the headphone socket and the solution for that is in this thread.
Mostly it's the speaker itself. The solution is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=281331
I've found a bit of sponge works better than paper - to see what I'm on about - go to the thread I've posted here.
Speaker issues and phone hangs
I also have similar issues with my Xda Neo. The speakers stops responding when i get incoming call. I mean the phone dosent ring. Then if i try any music player or ringtons, there is no sound. I have to soft reset. Sometime when i get incoming call, it dosent ring and it also hangs the phone. Then i have to hard reset. I had to use that sponge over the speaker and then the speaker works. But sometime it still hangs. Looks like either HTC or Windows Mobile has major issues. I dont know how long this sponge thing will work. Are there any solutions..

Tal,
I have dopod 818 pro and having the same phenomenon like others, now I'm abroad and can not check the thing with the headset.
Can you tell me please where can I get service in Israel (I bought mine in Thai).
Many thanks

sound problem
Dear all and administrator
can you give me solution about my dopod sound problem?
1. I just can used ring tones for receiving new messaging from the my dopod system ( I can't not used ring tones from my gallery/downloaded sound/ring tones application )
2. When new message coming and phone call coming, the sound is very small (can your's give me information how to setting that so the volume can be more loud).
Thank you very much for your's attention, I'm very apprenticed if the solution can being send to my private e-mail address at [email protected]
anyone have solutions on this issue? thanks
I think this is a different problem to the ones already posted, I'm new to this so please bear with me.
The microphone on my XDA mini s is rubbish so instead I like to use the supplied headset which is fine. You could hear calls and music at the right levels and more importantly meant I wasn't shouting....
but now the volume coming through the headset is very very low, the slider on the headset is pushed to the max and the slider on the phone is also at the top. Without changing any settings playing music in Windows Media player is fine. Why would the voulme for calls suddenly be different to the volume levels in other apps?
Hope somewhere here can help.
Thanks
I have the same problem, since upgrading to 2.24 rom, over bt headset. Hope someone who knows more reads this too...
I haven't upgraded any roms, this problem has just appeared. Another part of this problem is the person I'm calling via the headset say they get an echo of their own voice. Anyone one got any ideas?
Thanks
Problem solved, it was sent back to O2 and they said they changed the circuit board!! Easy fix really!!! :?
man, i dont want to send mine in... i need it on a day-to-day basis for my business. how long were you without it?
Hey all, im glad this site is up its been great finding what i can really do with my wizard!
here is he issue im having. the wizard has 3 different speakers and 1 microphone. 2 side speakers (used to play music, or speaker phone) and the 1 main speaker (used for hearing calls). none of the 3 work when im making calls, listening to music, alarms, or any of the "screen click" sounds and the microphone doesnt work on phone calls or note recordings. however, the one time the speakers do work is when i have an incoming call, i tried listening to see which speaker its coming out of and it sounds like all 3. the headphone jack still works so thats what ive been using. pressing the speaker phone button while on a call (that i cant hear) doesnt do anything, the UI doesnt show any change or switch to indicate its changed to speaker phone and the "speaker on" button doesnt change to "speaker off" like it used to.
originally i thought this was a ROM issue, i was using the manufacturer's ROM (cingular 8125, unlocked for tmobile service) so i followed the lovely tutorial and switched my phone over to the t-mobile 2.26 ROM. this had no effect, so I then upgraded to XDA's WM6 ROM and while i love this new ROM it still did not fix my sound issue.
im stumped, any help anyone can offer would be great. I wanted to post here before i crack it open to look at all the insides.
same problem!
I'm having the exact same problem! I just noticed the problem recently, when my phones alarm didn't sound. I'm running a custom cooked rom from mattk_r 318 kitchen, but I don't think the rom is the problem, as i am indeed still hearing sound from the head phone jack. I don't think the internal speakers are broken, as when a call comes, the phone rings, and the sound come out from the speaks as mentioned above!
Help!
dropped?
have you ever dropped your phone?
I have dropped mine a couple times and thats the only cause I can come up with. But this never seemed to be a problem until recently.
no major drop recently.
i havent really dropped it recently at all.and for some reason i dont think the hardware is the problem, because i tryed voice recorder, and it records my voice and i can play it
back through the headset.so that confirms that the mic and both spealers work (rings
when incoming call). i really dont want this to be the downfall for my wizard! is there
any key registry entrys for sound maybe that we could have a look at? btw my wizards a G4 if thats makes any difference.
please help!!
mine is a g3, if it were a software issue then reflashing should have solved it. right? i dont know enough about the internal workings of the wizard to know what a flash actually does.
?
Anyone have any ideas on what I can try?
Well, a flash is an OS upgrade/downgrade. It contains drivers, programs, registry settings, things of that sort. Sounds like your problem is hardware related, nothing to do with the OS itself.
I assume the warranty on that baby has already expired, so you're pretty much on your own.
Two options come to mind:
1. The obvious... buy another Wizard
2. The not so obvious... buy another Wizard with a broken screen and take all of its guts out and put them in yours.
A third option also exists... (ther's always a third way)
Mind you, this is for INFORMATION PURPOSES ONLY! In no way do I condone the below mentioned method.
Get a new line of service with Cingular and buy the Wizard to use with it. Exchange their boards, swap the IMEIs using the Wizard Service Tool utility found on these boards, cancel the line of service and return the "new" Wizard.
Sound issues
I have had a similar problem but located my problem to the microswitch which is in the headphone socket. Might be worth trying pulling the headphones in and out a few times to see if it allows the microswitch to release (if that is the problem?)
Steve
The wizard is magic
Some how my wizard seemed to repair it self. Its sound is working again...i didn't reflash or do anything special....weird. I think its because the phone had a good vibrate....ive got one of those speaker docks for the wizard..i put it in there...got a phone call and talked and stuff...but while it was in there (with the mic plugged it) it vibrated alot...maybe that flicked the switch mentioned above?
weird..this phone never ceases to amaze me. I just hope it doesn't happen again... because it appears to be emerging as a problem as the wizards get older?
Keep up the good work guys!
LOL!!!!!!!!! its so simple and yet so amazingly smart
wow, Steve you are the most amazing person EVER!
I put the headphone piece in about 1/10 of the way and slowly made a swirling action as i slid it all the way in, clicked the start button on wizard and i heard the "click" for the first time in a month!
Thanks!
I tried different options to get my sound back, no luck so far
Problem started after using the headset-connector to connect it to an FM-Transmitter.
After reading this thread, my guess is that the "micro-switch" is in a wrong position. So I opend my MDA, but can't find any "switch" in that connector.
Is there some more info about that connector, a connection-diagram perhaps ?
what worked for me was inserting the headset jack in roughly, robbing each side of the headset jack to try to hit the "switch". that might work for you.
Yes!!! Thank you a lot!
I have the same problem, no sound in my speakers, just vibrate and sound in handsfree. I figure out that this micro-switch could be the problem, but I haven't know how to solve it. Thank you once again, I love my SPV!! and this community.
Fixed!
Woohoo!
This problem just cropped up for me on the weekend.
Thankfully it wasn't long before I happened across this thread.
About a minute of persistent jiggling the microphone jack did the trick.
Thanks!
Hello everyone,
first thanks to this great forum! - My first post. I have some problems with my speakers, and since it looks like this is nothing uncommon, I had the hope that I can fix it easily. I found some tricks (paper in the backside, audiojack fix) - but after thinking a little bit it looks like my problem is a little bit more complex.
All in all, my speakers (and my built-in mic) are not working. So for example if I make a call, both will not work so I won't hear anything nor the other person will hear from me.
But if my alarm clock rings or I receive a call, I will hear my ring- and alarm tone from the rear speaker. But I will not hear anything if I try to play music or while choosing the ringtones in my mobile phone. That's what is really wondering me.
Do you have any idea how this problem can happen - and maybe how it can be solved? Using a headset everything works fine.
Best regards and a happy new year 2009

Have you read this:
A summary of common speaker problems with the HTC Prophet
HTC Prophet Speaker Problems mike channon.pdf
Mike
I didn't read this pdf, but I read about these problems, these are the popular ones that doesn't fit. I couldn't solve it with these tips and also the strange thing remains unexplained: If, for example, it would be a audio jack fault, why then it uses the rear speaker for ringtones with incoming calls and the alarm clock? But if it would be A, the speaker is faulty, then it shouldn't work anytime..
I have a feeling it's a (B) - from the PDF ie a Jack Plug Socket problem. The alarms and ringing will come through the rear speaker as is normal but in call sound once the call is answered is not directed to the internal earpiece speaker along with mic sound being directed outward. Of course, what we cannot say for sure is that the earpiece speaker is not faulty. However given that your mic sound is not being directed properly either then the probability is that the sound is not being directed as it should by the jack plug socket.
Having said that there remains for me one issue that is puzzling. That is that the larm and ringing sounds work correctly through the rear loudspeaker, BUT I think you said that playing tunes on WM Player does not?!
Despite the above, and given that the Jack Plug Socket is a "multi-Switching" one, it is the most likely culprit. If you look at the picture of the contacts you can see that there are a few possible incorrect combinations of contacts in which it could be stuck.

Absolutely right, that's the strange thing. And when I want to hear a ringtone preview while choosing the ringtone, it is also not working. The alarm clock and ringtone by incoming calls are the only things where it works - perfect.

Yep, and I tried to do there something, but didn't helped (and it looks like that the mobile doesn't enable the earphone)..
Mmm. if the jack plug socket is fine, then at this distance I have run out of suggestions - sorry!
Mike
Anyway, thank you very much for your help.
But maybe someone knows how the technique of the mobile phone works, how it can happen that only on a special action the sound is working? Can this be a hardware problem (I think so, cause as far as I remember right the problem occured a short time after a deforming crash)? Or is it a software problem, maybe both?
The point that it is working on special events let me think that there should be a software way to solve this problem - cause it looks like there is a different way the sound goes when it is an incoming call or the alarm clock than with normal sound. And so it may be possible to let the normal sound go the way the alarm clock goes?
I'm not a developer, so I don't know about this, but this is something I could imaging.. does anybody now about this more?
Some strange update:
I just downgraded to my original operator firmware with the result, that the sound for the alarm clock is also not working - with this wm 5 version only ringtones with incoming calls are working.
Upgrading again to Wm 6.1 enabled the sound for the alarm clock again.
.. confusing, but it also looks now for me that there should be a software possibility to enable the sound again...
