"Always on GPRS" Hack - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

has anyone else made this observation after installing the REgistry hack to keep GPRS/UMTS always on:
I have noticed that the phone seems to hang quite frequently when the hack is in place. It seems to happen if the phone cell chages while something is transmitting.
I've turned off the hack again and this seemed to reduce my soft resets by 80%

Yes, have the same on my MDA Pro. Don't know if this is a problem of the damn old gsm ROM Version.

TMob 4.01.16 - Keeps on turning itself on

Hi All,
Just a few issues I'm having with the T-Mob 4.01.16 ROM, anyone else? Anyone got any ideas on fixes?
1 - Keeps on turning itself on (i've confirmed that active sync has no schedule). People have suggested for the known bug in XDAII to kill the activesync process
2 - Text message on-screen alert, doesn't turn the XDA screen on
Cheers - Steve
Somebody else was having a similar problem but thought it was the sim toolkit causing it.
It's doing this to me as well.
Seemed worse when I ran the tAgenda today plugin, but it didn't completely stop when I removed it.
If enough of T-Mobiles customers notice it and complain there should be a fix coming out soon enough. Or perhaps it is not there if you run the T-Mobile applications that came with the ROM?
My turn-ons seem tied to the schedule that Inbox goes out to check the email. whenever the screen comes on and I go look, Inbox is in the middle of an email download.
I have tried re-flashing the ROM and making no modifications to it, it still turns on on a regular basis.
This has been a problem at some point for all PocketPC based devices, my old Cassiopea, Compaq and Dell have all done this at some point (fixed by ROM update eventually). Oh well, waiting once more won't kill me, but will kill my battery.
The problem does not seem to exist in the AT&T Rom, but it is a common thing in the TMOs beta and this latest release. It is bad when you leave the phone and it redials the last number called ( either in or out!)
Also the SD card does get erased, even when formatted in BACKUP FAT and named properly. The best cure is to keep it locked until you need to add or remove something from it and keep a back up of the SD in a folder in your PC.
My wife is getting jealous of the amount of time I spend tinkering with my XDA 1 and 2 phones and shows off her simple phone!
If nobody beats me to it I will compare the registry settings of the 30.09 and the 4.01.16 to see if I can find anything.
bamse: If you find anything to do with the fading volume in the AT&T rom whilst traulling through the reg, and can remove the "feature" from the AT&T rom you would simply be classed as a LEGEND!
The T-Mo rom still doesn't seem to be as slick as the AT&T (if only it didn't have that stupid fading volume)
Cheers
Neil
Mine keeps switching itself on as well (4.01.00 ENG) - I had always thought that it was something to do with hitting the power switch when I put it into my trouser pocket, as it has powered up when I return to my desk and take it out again. Although it seems hard to see how the power button can be accidentally pressed when putting the XDA into a pocket, especially when the button is below the contour of the case.
I would be interested to find out why this is happening.
I also noticed that the vibrate function no longer works. I have the following setting configured: "Settings, Phone, Sounds, Ring Type: Vibrate" and my XDA does not vibrate when it rings. Then I pressed the side volume button and selected vibrate (the icon next to the time changes to a vibrating XDA), and it still will not vibrate. Setting other notifications to "vibrate" also does not work.
I seem to remember it vibrating when I had an earlier ROM version (3.20.06 ENG), but not in this current ROM version (T-Mobile 4.01.00 ENG).
Can someone please confirm that I have the settings correct?
I have now installed PocketZenPhone, and it also does not work for vibrate, although other users of this program report no vibrate issues. PZP is a great program, it works really well.
I think there maybe a vibrate bug in this current ROM version (T-Mobile 4.01.00 ENG).
Has anyone had anything like this happen to them, or heard of others who have?
Thanks,
A few more observations on the T-Mob ROM;
- GPRS does not have a disconnect button, the AT&T ROM had this feature, very handy
- My signal appears to be much less stable with the T-Mob ROM
I'm going to roll back to the AT&T and put up with the volume clipping, it's far better than an unstable device, that you can't disconnect the GPRS on without turning the radio off+on & keeps on turning itself on!

Tmobile USA MDA Hanging/GPRS Problem

Hi All, new wizard/MDA owner here. I have been a Jam owner for quite some time and just got the wizard. Everything has been great except one problem.
Sometimes when I turn the wizard on after it has been asleep for a little bit (10min +) the buttons or touch screen do not respond for 30sec to 1min. Also, during this time GPRS disconnects, the icon still shows connected, but agile messenger will disconnect. Afterwards everything is fine, buttons respond and GPRS is connected.
Needless to say this is annoying. This was never a problem with the Jam so I'm pretty sure its a problem with the wizard.
Some background, this is a Tmobile USA MDA.
OS ROM 1.8.10.2 WWE
Radio ROM upgraded to 1.13.10 (thought maybe the radio ROM was the prob)
Installed Apps:
MS Voice Command 1.5
Agile Messenger
Total Commander
Plus all of the standard TMO apps (I did not prevent the extended rom from executing)
I've tried a lot like hard resetting, not letting the extended rom install, etc. Anyway, I'm a pretty advanced user and have searched all over for a possible answer. Any help is much appreciated.
Ok, here's an update.
I've narrowed the problem down to a suspend/resume issue.
The problem goes away if I use pTravelAlarm Wakeup Tweak and check the option "Always wakeup PPC to full power mode". The problem with this fix is when I have email running in the background, the device turns on every time it syncs messages.
Another solution is to use mortsaver to turn off the screen only, but this reduces the battery life.
Any ideas? is there a way to tweak the suspend/resume options?
well it seems like nobody else is experiencing this problem or has any solutions.
Perhaps a new ROM will help. Can anyone suggest a good stable ROM to use on a US MDA? Has anyone tried the AKU2 ROM on a US MDA? Suggestions please.
you should see if you have the same issues without those 3 apps you listed.
MS Voice Command 1.5
Agile Messenger
Total Commander
I have no problems and leave GPRS/Edge on all time. I get 100+ emails everyday and everything is fine.
I had this same problem on a TMobile MDA. No idea what caused it (hadn't installed any new apps in the 48 hours prior to the device beginning to freeze), but a hard reset fixed it.

OK, this problem was still plaguing me. I tried everything, hard reset, various combinations of the software listed above (including no software). But I still had the problem. That is until I upgraded to the Qtek AKU2 rom (modified for tmobile, http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=44631).
Everything seems great so far with this rom. More stable, none of the annoying bugs mentioned before. Anyway, from my experience, upgrading to this rom is a big improvement!
Hope this helps some people out there.

Phone Off on Power On, outgoing call problems, etc.

I am using the latest HTC ROM in the UK with Radio v. 1.03.03.10. When I restart the unit in the morning after switching the power off overnight the phone is off enough times to be a nuisance if I do not notice it. Occasionally it switches into flight mode when the unit is on as well, but this seems to be happening less frequently. I also sometimes have difficulty making outgoing calls, ie the call ends before even getting connected, and redialling will not work until I switch the phone off and back on again. Is anyone else having these problems? Is this an issue with the radio ROM? I have read about the difficulties with the latest Radio ROM upgrades on the forum, and if a Radio ROM upgrade would solve the problem I would appreciate some advice on the best one to go with for use primarily in Europe, with occasional travel to the US and Japan.
Hi, Sorry to hear about your issues, I and a couple others here have or had the problem with the phone being off/flightmode after turning it off, then back on.
Theres a another post about this somewhere..I was just too lazy to find it before I posted, and last I checked a true fix hadn't been found.
If I am correct it shouldn't occur if you only do a softreset, and if you look at your signal bars when you shut it off, it looks like it turns the phone/radio off during the shutdown process...that is normal I'm pretty sure, cause even when it worked correctly it still shut the phone off before a power off, I think the issue is related to the startup process and it isn't correctly turning it back on.
I have had it work fine for the longest, and then when I installed some software it quit, after the fresh installation of software it has worked again, also I notice if I power off the phone while its charging and then power it back on, it always works correctly.
I haven't had any actual incall/call issues myself I can't say if a Radio upgrade would help with that, but I don't suspect a radio only upgrade would help with the flight mode being on after a power down, but I am far from being positive, I think its installed software/ROM related, sorry I can't be of some real help, I'm dealing with it myself..its aggrivating to me, I have forgotten to turn flightmode off and missed calls for half a day untill I looked and noticed.
Start the improvement way by upgrading the Radio ROM
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_ExtractedRadioRoms
Here you can find the 1.20 ROM, extracted from JASJAM ROM. Try to install it on your device.
Tell me about this.
Thanks for the feedback and the suggestions. Most helpful.
yes - i get that too - constantly (on a t-mob vario) - i get bumped off the network at least 5-10 times a day and it takes me anywhere between and 10 minutes to get back on. i also get bumped off systematically every night (i am always off when i get up).
calls too are a disaster - an average, it takes me 3 or 4 tries to complete a call when i have full network. (sometimes as much as 10-15 tries)
took my sim and put it into a magician and all went away, so *suppose* it could be a 3g thing, but i am really not convinced because the hermes does have a 2g radio as well (so it should fall back onto 2g whenever 3g fails...)
Not a Fix but a Working Solution
I started having the issue of the radio being off on startup a few weeks ago.
So I invested($10) in a copy of SK Softwares Scheduling Manager SKScheMa.
http://s-k-tools.com/index.html?skschema/m_skschema.html
This has a powerful scripting language and one of the script commands is "GPRS on"
I created a shortcut in the startup folder to a GPRS On script. and since then I have had no more problems.
i´ve the some problem, what do you do for no more problems ?¿?¿
thanks
Thanks for this. I will give it a try. Do you know by any chance if this also provides a way to have the phone ring through the speaker when it is connected to a Bluetooth headset?
>Thanks for this. I will give it a try. Do you know by any chance if this also provides a way to have the phone ring through the speaker when it is connected to a Bluetooth headset?<
If you are refering to SKSchema, then this should be possible. You can create a script that runs when a call is received.
The script can then instruct the phone to play a sound file.
We turned off the UMTS service and reverted back to GSM and that seems to have solved the issue.
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
J.
Just a slight update to maybe help find the cause, I had created a backup with spb before the problem occurred (minus pim data and emails not sure if it mattered) and after having the problem arise again and a few other issues, I decided to hard reset and try out the backup I made.
After installing my backup the problem was gone, and then I got bored the other day and installed some software, and I think removed some, and I had it happen once again after I had ran memmaid 1.72 and rebooted.
I don't know if it the software installaions that are causing it..but one thing that has been a constant is the memmaid, and it could even be my fault.
Is anyone having this happen to a basically oem device?

Well, I can't exacly tell why but I get the same feeling about extra software.
After a hardreset or ROM upgrate (now Cing 1.34/radio 1.16) everything's fine. I deactivate ActiveSync and install some extra software (PocketZenPhone, Total Commander, Regedit, TomTom). After a few days still everything's fine. So I install some other software (SPB PocketPlus, Jetware, a today- and phoneskin) and still everything's fine for a few days. But then on a (not so) fine day: it hangs! The phone doesn't react or TomTom is hanging on the startup screen or the whole device is freezing. Why? I don't know, softreset and everythings fine for a few days.
I notices a few situations while it happened: first when I connected the carpower adapter and second a few times while receiving a phonecall (in my carkit and on poweroff).
Uninstalling everything doesn't seem to do the trick: it still hangs now and then. Also I dont have the patience to hardreset and use my device clean, without extra programs for a few weeks. But I guess in that case everything would be ok (?). But a device without the extra's has no use to me...
My feeling is that the installing the extra's causes a instability in the registry or elsewhere. I also have the feeling that the hardware causes certain instability: the gliding keyboard, the screen (alignmentproblems), the buttons, the SD-card, the network cards, bluetooth... (I had my device in repair with HCT because of the too easy gliding keyboard, the stylus, and the instability with TomTom, but those problems are solverd for now, exept for TomTom). So much hardware, so much software, all in one small device...
A small addition to my previous post: I think another possible cause for instability are the famous memoryleaks. Starting and stopping programs in my opinion never clears the whole memory, in spite of "real" programstoppers like SPB PocketPlus. After working a few days this could cause a freeze (?)

Instant Dropped calls on Cingular?

I keep getting calls that drop the second I hit the answer key. I'm using the latest Cingular based firmware for my 8525. Is anyone else experiencing this? I'm trying to determine if it is one of my installed apps or a problem with the phone itself. Thing is I have no apps that are meant to handle calls or VM so if other users are experiencing this please post.
I am not having this problem, 1st I've heard of anyone dropping calls instantly.
Were you located, I'm in chicago and know 4 other with the 8525 without any dropped calls.
NJ. I've been on the Cingular network for a few years now. I had an MPX220 before this.
In my opinion it may come from the magnet of the default case; give some try without it.
yeah, I've had it happen to me too. Interesdtingly, it didn't seem limited to my TyTN either. I had it on my 8125. Seems to happen most often when I answer using the softkeys instead of just pressing the green phone icon.
hmm. im not really sure which i answer the phone, both if im not wrong. I'll have to keep my eye out for that.
I was having a similar problem that turned out to be my case hitting the buttons as I pulled the phone out. I switched to a seidio clip case and it hasn't happened since.
there was a slight delay, so it actually disconnected about the time I hit the button. sometimes the call would answer instead of dropping, depending on which button was hit.
Same Problem on Vodafone
I bought 2 V1605s (tytn) 2 months ago for my business. I seem to have the exact same problem on both phones - about 20-30% of calls have this issue. Scenario is as follows:
Phone rings, after any amount of time Answer with either the green button or the soft keys and the call dies. The other party is routed to Voicemail at that time. While this problem is present I sometimes get a problem where I can't initiate a call - get an error that Cannont make an outgoing call due to lack of signal.
I have seen some suggestions that this (or similar problems) can happen when you are going into and out of coverage blackspots. My work and home areas both have blackspots, so it seems to fit with this.
Only solution I have found is a soft reset. I have tried the following:
- Set band selection to Manual - didn't work
- Set UMTS/GSM to GSM only - didn't work
- Do a hard reset (wiping data and other installed programs) - didn't work
- Make sure that all other applications are closed properly through task Manager (especially data-using ones) - Trying now - no results.
I'd appreciate any suggestions as I need this sorted - no matter how good this phone is as a PDA, I can't tolerate losing 30% of my incoming calls!
I've had similar issues. Last couple of days have been worse than others.
I am beginning to consider an alternate carrier -- the big V is better in and around NYC from what I understand

8525 WiFi Problems related to PTT-fix (for me)

Like many on this forum, I have had difficulty getting WiFi to work when at home, or anywhere else there was WiFi. I have MediaMax and had just resigned myself to living with it. I had done all the fixes suggested, removed the proxy, set up MYISP, etc. to no avail.
I was reading a post on Cingular's user forums and two people claimed to have fixed their problems by removing Sleuth's PTT-fix, which makes the PTT button mappable to whatever you want.
I recalled what when I had hard-reset my device, WIFI worked, but after I had loaded all my programs back on, it had stopped working.
On a lark, I uninstalled PTT-fix and soft booted. That's all I did.
WIFI is currently working fine. I really miss the remapped PTT button, though...
Not knocking Sleuth, or his PTT-fix. Just posting my experiment and it's result.

are you running the stock Cingular rom or the aku 3.2 update?
Stock 8525- shipped Rom
I'm running the stock Cingular ROM, have downloaded the leaked rom but not flashed it , yet.
Mostly running shareware stuff. I'm a user, not a hacker. Scared of bricking my 8525 due to doing something stupid before I get up to speed.
Only tweaks I know of were fit4cat's, HTC x button.
I have a registry editor, but haven't used it much.
hmmm... not easy to think of how pttfix could affect WiFi on the stock rom. Had you been using the aku3.2 rom I'd have wondered a bit since PTT is wound throughout the RIL in that one. PTTFix is just a simple message driven service. Press PTT and it gets a press message, release PTT and it gets a release message. The PTTFix message handler simply checks the registry to see what should be done when these events occur.
Perhaps it's WM5 itself, not PTT-fix...
Maybe it's not handling having a function taken away from it. Good program practices say things should be modular, have regular entry and exit points, etc., but maybe it's poorly written and doesn't do that well, and some pointer or flag, or something (can you tell I'm not a programmer?) gets mangled.
Wi-fi is still working, and it recovers from a soft-reset, a power-on, and being disconnected/reconnected from activesync.
Maybe I'm a fluke, don't know.
I may re-install later this week, and see if the problem recurs.
