Ok so I have the fabled white screen issue on an 8525. When it first occurred I searched and read all the write ups, decided I had the ribbon cable issue. Took it apart and simply unplugged and replugged the ribbon cable with great results, no more white screen.
I repeated once when it came back after being bumped around, again with positive results...but this last(3rd)time instead of it working I now get white screen 95% of the time. I re-notched the sliders the first time, and last time.
During the 5% it works I noticed the charge light would correspond to it going white. This never happened before...
Example:
When OFF - Connect charger, Red light for 1 second, then nothing=White screen from power on
When OFF - Connect charger, Red light for 1 second, then orange charge indicator = normal startup
When ON and Working - Connect charger, no light, no charge - reboots to white screen
When ON and Working - Connect charger, orange charge indicator, reboots normally.
There is no heat or noticeable pressure on any parts, everything seems to fit normally.
It does boot normally with screen white.
Any ideas? I really don't want to give up on this thing, is there any hope? or just ebay it for parts?
Thanks
-Nick
same problems here, if someone could just tell me what parts to order, cause I have no warranty (ordered over ebay). I tried both the instruction that has chinese fonts on the page , and other from R&R, no luck, white screen all the way..
I had the WSOD and took it apart and reassembled a few time. The 3rd or 4th time the screem came back, but now it is shifter to the right around 1/4" or so. I mean there is just white along the left edge, then the normal screen/color starts and is cut off on the right.
Does anyone know how to correct that, is it related to the same flex cable or is there something else I disturbed?
mine will fade to white.. then i just push the power to put it in standby, then push power again to wake it back up and back to normal.. it rarely does it but still annoying...
If You Ordered From At&t
I had this problem about 2 weeks ago!!!!
I thought it was a fluke!
Anyway, walked over to 43rd and Lexington (NYC FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW THAT MANHATTAN IS THE CENTER OF THE WORLD)
and they gave me the EXCHANGE HOTLINE for at&t.
I called them up, told them my screen is fading to WHITE and the lady sent me a new or referbished phone.. i dont even know.
Just so you know, i ordered my phone on AMAZON with a new activation. its covered under the MANUFACTURERS warentee for a full year from the date of purchase... so is the REPLACEMENT PHONE... but not from the date of replacement, just the date of purchase.
did anyone get deeper into this yet? I got a 8500 (need those without camera) from ebay USA, already with white screen. After reading here, that this is mostly an issue with connectors, I bought it, disassembled it and reassembled it, though still white. Should I give the contacts a treatment with contact-spray? (there's a tuner spray that doesn't leave residues) Or is there something broken within the ribbon cables? Seller said it has been dropped (but he also said, he didn't want to open it, while it clearly has been opened, one screw missing and warranty seal gone). It ssems to boot up normal otherwise, I hear a sound after the boot process, so probably this isn't a software issue?
Edit: another thing I noticed: When I run it without any keyboard connected at all, it's also white. I then connected the dpad again, and I could see a hint of the at&t logo in the lower part of the screen. When I pressed around on the back of the dpad a bit, all LEDs would go on/off... Sound to me like the dpad has gone bad, possible?
Edit II: Got it. Using a 20x eyeloupe I found that the PCB of the DPad is broken under the little chip on it. Now I just gotta find a dpad here in germany, but I assume those Hermes' are all equal...
hello
where can I get manual (if there is one) for disassembling hermes. link in wiki does not work.
thanks
this worked good for me

Anyone know if this applies to the 8125 as well? I've got a flickering white screen. I had dropped my phone a few weeks back and cracked the LCD. Replaced it with an OEM LCD - it worked fine for about 2 weeks and then just suddenly went all white. Phone still works, I can still get calls - just can't see who is calling.
I don't recall that the wizard had the same problem... Though from a logical point, it seems that there is an issue behind white screens and the thumbpad being responsible for it, so it may well be the same thing. Perhaps just disassemble the wizard (there should be a howto too) and check if theres a similar connection from mainboard to thumbpad circuit.
Is there a disassembling manual for a imate k-jam that anyone knows about?
Here's a website with a video manual i found useful...
http://viralelectronics.com/category/howto/page/2/
Figured out the problem...
The only reason I figured out the screen goes blank is because the motherboard loses connection with the screen when you slide the keyboard out...try this out and see if the screen comes back...
put the screen on sleep mode (no white screen)...then slide out the keyboard and tilt it a little hard after pressing on the screen and put the power on. if it doesnt work try again it might take some pressure and power to make it work...be careful not to put too much power but as far as I went, it's a very sturdy cell.
alternately, slide out the keyboard in sleep mode, and press all the buttons really hard and then try to press the power button (press more towards the space bar because that helps)...if any of this works and the screen comes back on even just for a second...follow the following
Go back to the person who gave the link to the site with opening the HTC instructions and follow through and clean the whole phone up from dirt around the screen and such...you dont need to put those rubber things or whatever it says to put on the screen...then when you are putting it back together, press hard on the wire connecting the touch screen to the motherboard. I suggest sealing it with a good tape...and then you are good to go! I did it but it had a few glitches...the screens contrast sometimes goes awry but it is still visible and responds to touch. Also, the physical buttons work as well!!
Good Luck and do it at your on risk.
Have any of you tried this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=321163
hope the best
i tried this and it worked for me. i also pressed alil hard around the d-pad and heard a pop. i think it poped back into place.
thanks

i still have this problem.
fixed my wsod
I noticed a few days ago my 8525 screen went white, rebooted and it went away. Today it came back, but would only go away for a few seconds and then back to white. After reading some forums I decided to check the connector. I took the phone apart following this site as a guide. I removed the connector on the board side and cleaned the contacts with a qtip and denatured alcohol. Phone has been perfect for the last few hours, no more white screen of death. I didn't mess with the connector on the LCD side, just the board side. I'm a computer tech and I found it quite annoying to disassemble, but I managed without causing any damage, however, I'd rate the job at about a 8/10 as far as technical ability.

i agree that this is one of the first things to try in curing the white screen issue. Others may find their problem runs a little deeper and the contacts on the d/pad chip are broken. An improvised cure which may not be very permanent is to place a little padding on the surface of the chip as described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=321163
If you have appropriate heat gun equipment you can re-flow the solder on the d/pad daughter board - but remember to remove the sticky key pad layer or you'll cook it!!
I regret that I'm closing this thread because we have several "White Screen" threads and the questions and answers are being spread all over the place.

My girl gave me a cingular 8525 today, it had come into her work and I am trying to fix it. I am a hardcore wizard user so i am very familiar with HTC, cooking and whatnot, but my 1st problem is I cant turn this thing on. The battery may be very dead, or the phone may be broken. All I have is my mini USB plug which doesnt seem to be compatible with the new phone. The hermes is squared off a little. I can get a little red light if I move the USB plug around a little. 1st thing, I have to turn this on, I have had my wizards battery be completely out of juice and I had to jumpstart sort of speak, so I was about to get on that with the hermes battery, but Im still unsure if my existing mini USB stuff will plug in with the hermes' slightly different sized plug. Anyone know? or if its just as simple as buying a new plug.
How many thread are you going to start on this issue? geez slow down a bit and you will get some help, but first start reading .
btw have you even thought about doing a battery swap huh? or maybe using the right plug since you know its not the right one...i
bam. update, hermes is on, jumpstart solved the issue... no backlight though. checked backlight settings and they were up all the way... ideas?
After unlocking and flashing to farias rom and still no backlight, I think its safe to assume that the problem is in the hardware. anyone know how to replace the LCD screen or where I can get one?
whoa crazy another update: I left the phone alone to charge, battery is at 60% and screen just came on everything looks peachy! I am noticing it dimming and getting brighter occasionally though.
The phone is acting very strange, still unsure if its the hardware thats acting up. it went back to not working, the screen was lit up just once for maybe 20 seconds, noticed that the keyboard backlighting does not work either, but for that 20 seconds when the screen backlight was on, that was as well. Starting to think that there may be a loose connection somewhere inside the phone, or the light sensor is somehow not working and screwing it up. If the screen lit up once, then to me that means the backlight is not burned out. If anyone has any ideas, please please let me know. I know its a weird and uncommon problem but someone may have gone through it. Thanks again.
It is probable that the internal connectors are loose and or battery connections.
Really, all the information you need is already posted several times over. So use the search. But as a starter for dismantling and the service manual see the website in my signature.
You will need some skill in dismantling and a fair bit of care and patience or you will end up with something in worse condition than now!
Mike
interesting update for those who dont care, it appears that I have a very sensitive light sensor, after downloading the official wm6 from at&t my keyboard now lights up in the dark, before nothing lit up, just the dial and end buttons... I wonder if it could be the software or something in the registry thats not clearing being the reason why I still have no backlight... but last night it came on for about 10 minutes afer me not touching it at all... strange little device. oh well, if theres any ideas id love to be able to replace my wizard with this...

The chargers are the same plug. The 8525 plug is squared off for the headset. They dont want you to plug your hermes headset into your wizard
I need a replacement windows PDA phone for my lost wizard... and i have a friend willing to sell his 8525 for $50... the downside...
according to his is... his touch screen works half the time.... something about working on a full charge... or not working on a full charge... and when its halfway charged... it does the opposite... etc etc...
he said the screen lights up just does not respond to the touches under the above mentioned conditions.
i did a search over here and HOFO.... and have noticed alot of people have problems with the top right corner of the screen (portrait) being stuck and closing out apps.... or launching the start menu repetedly...
and there isnt really a fix?....
is 50$ still a good deal?.... will a replacement screen and digitizer fix it?.... which is around another $50 i believe?
or should i buy one from ebay... they are selling for around 170-200$ shipped.... or is this a problem that plagues all 8525 hermes eventually?.. and i shouldnt bother with this model... and go back to the wizard or get something else?
The Hermes is a really great phone (I passed on getting a Kaiser, as it didn't offer enough of an upgrade), but I don't know if I would personally buy one in that's having issues like that.
50 bucks isn't bad, though. I might bite for that price.
I've had no screen issues over the last 1 1/2 years. I just saw a used 8525 sell for $181 on ebay...it's a great scalable device!
Alright.. i got a hold of the phone.....
everything seems great.... touchscreen was working... but as soon as i went to charge the battery.... and took it off charge once it was filled up to 80%, the touch screen stopped responding...
and i also did a hard reset ... and the screen still isnt responding.... and i cant pass green setup screen that asks me to tap the screen to continue.
any way to bypass this screen?... i dont mind using the phone with only the buttons...
and do you think this is battery related?.... the prev. owner said something about... leaving the battery to cool over night... and pop it back in... and touchscreen should respond again....
any suggestions?... thank you.
Find the program "Remote Screen Alignment". If you can get the Hermes to screen alignment to work, you can save the settings to your pc then if you reflash an os or have to hard reset you don't need the touchscreen. Try taking the battery out overnight and see if you can do the alignment then. Once past the screen alignment you can operate the Hermes using the buttons BUT you need to first get past the alignment settings.
Alternatively, if you know someone with the same Hermes you can get the Alignment settings off their phone. You need the above app.
Cheers...
if your looking for a screen, i have a screen complete with digitiser for sale? PERFECTLY working
i can also throw in a ribbon cable which works but only displays colours in 4bit mode!
PM me if you want the screen

well its not even the screen alignment screen that im stuck at....
when you do a hardboot.... the FIRST splash screen that shows up after the ATT stuff
its a green screen that says windows mobile DIRECT PUSH... and it says
"please tap the screen to continue etc etc"
will that program help me get past that?....
and the battery is out of the case right now... and im in school..., hopefully by the time i get back home it should work.

well... i see that you live in the UK... it might not be favorable purchasing it from you...
and tihs ribbon cable that you speak of.... do i need one for the isntalation of the screen?... and the one you have isnt made for this phone right?
Alright guys... so pretty much what the previous owner says checks out..
the phones touchscreen started responding to touches on a cold battery that was sitting for a few hours....
as soon as i begin to charge and the batter warms up... or the phone warms up.. im not sure... the touchpad stops responding.
ANY SUGGESTIONS?...
is this an issue with the battery or the touchscreen?...
aside from that.... this phone is fantastic!
Hi there
I am in the UK, and the screen has in fact been removed from a cingular 8525 i cannabilised for the d-pad board, the screen works perfectly and the ribbon cable will of course fit your phone.
I am willing to ship to the USA, and in fact i regularly do, only recently i just sold a little rubber dust cap for the hermes on these forums and its on his way to him right now. if you can pay via paypal your more than welcome!
Not the battery. The battery only supplies power to the mainboard and through that to the lcd. If the battery was at fault then you wouldn't be able to start up. It sounds like you may have heat problems with either the lcd ribbon or with with the flex ribbon connecting the top part of your phone to the mainboard. If I was you I'd check out Mike Channon's site as he is the MASTER of Hermes hardware and if you don't find a solution you can PM him. Heres a link to his site - http://michael-channon.spaces.live.com/
Cheers...
id buy it and sell the parts on ebay
Ok, im going to start not from the beginning beginning, but from where problems started.
Friday night, went out, I was writing an sms when somebody pushed me and i dropped my wiz, i picked it up, to find that the battery was gone, nowhere to be found, i did find the cover tho. i tried to look for the batt, but i was in the middle of the club so it wasn't that easy.. I knew that a friend of mine had a spare one so i didn't worry that much.
Sunday I got the replacement, tried it, no luck, it ran out i thought, but when i tried to charge it, nothing happened. Buying a new one is not that easy when you are in Argentina, and they are expensive, so i decided to jump sart it. good news: it worked, i could turn on the phone, so the battery is fine. bad news: it still doesn't want to charge!
I previously had problems with the usb, and i had to have it soldered again, pretty strong, but I thought that might be the problem again, so i disassembled my wiz. new problem: the power button broke, the tiny, tiny black piece fell off, AND I LOST IT! DOH!
Anyways, the usb is still soldered pretty strong, i don't think its gonna go loose again, so thats not the freaking problem!
So now, instead of the initial no-charge problem, i have a disassembled wizard, that won't charge the goddamn battery, AND a broken power button (tried to glue it, but fell off again and thats when i lost the piece).
Regarding the button, i've studied my options, what would you recommend and how would you do it?
option 1: turn on the phone with the soft reset hole, and remap the screen on/off function to another button.
option 2: replace the power button internal piece with the one from the voice command button (i never use it). i've taken a look and they seem to be the same, but i don't know if taking it off and soldering it back would work..
anyways, that leaves me again with my initial problem, and i do have an hypothesis. I THINK (because I THINK i remember this happening to me before), that the battery won't start charging until windows has started, and the jump star power the battery has is not enough to get it started (tried to tape it and leave it for a while to see if it charged a bit more, but didn't work, the phone turns on but goes out when loading, and since i've my wiz pretty loaded it takes its time to load).
So to try this out i would need a way to charge the battery manually, and i don't have access to another wiz to have it charged (my friend had a spare batt because his wiz is broken).
So, if you have a solution to this, ANY different solution, or even an IDEA, please give me a hint!
For what i've read, this are common problems, so there must be something out there.
Man, that's a bad thing
I'll try to help you as much as I can.
You are right about Wiz only start charging when it's on. After my N78 was stolen and I went back to the Wizard, the battery was without any charge for months... I plugged it and no red LED... Turned it on and, bingo, red LED and charging!
The voice command and the on/off buttons are the same, so (in theory) it would work 100% IF you were able to change their places (at least for me, it is impossible to do manually, never found any good equip here =\ )
With a lot of patience (and a small soldering iron) I would try to take the voice comm button off and place it where the on/off was.
For the battery, maybe someone here can point if there is a "battery charger" standalone device, or such a thing...
Good luck man
hey thanks for the quick reply!
i'm not thinking of doing it myself, i'm not not that precise nor is my solder, but i know a guy, same dude that fixed my usb. I like that idea more than the other, but i guess that remapping the screen on/off and using the soft reset button would be much safer.. i haven't made up my mind about that yet.
Weir thing about MY wiz, at least thats what i think happened to me last time my battery was completely discharged, is that not only the device must be ON for it to charge, but it needs to have WINDOWS already loaded, i know for most devices it's not like that, but i think thats how mine works, or at least thats the only explanation i could find!
btw, i love your case modding concept, and since i might have my wiz sitting for a while, i might go ahead and try something too! nothing as extreme as yours of course.. i'd love to see more updates on your project along with some guide to see what ideas i can take
slight detail while thinking my options.. if i was to remap the screen on/off function to another button, would i need to have the device in sync? or connected via cable? because when i had the usb soldered, don't know how nor why (all the pins seem to be ok) but the device won't be recognized by any computer, usb only works for charging (or used to work, at least, still haven't figured why it won't charge now).
If its only an app that i can load to the phone, once i have it working (that if i ever will), i can load the app thru minisd, BT or IrDa so that would't be a problem.. i haven's investigated that issue yet.
Hey jinxie, how's your Wizard?
If you're still stuck with the battery (I hope not), check this out...
I think this will solve your battery problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4963547&postcount=5
That's probably to work, just be carefull with the battery's temperature. If it starts to heat, stop the process and wait it to get normal, then start again.
Good luck!
i tried keeping the wires attached to the contacts for a while, didn't think it'd work better doing it just for a little and then repeating the process, i'll try that!
yeap, i'm still stuck and i think i will be for a while, i have to solve the battery issue first (would be useless to do anything else if i'm not certain i will get it to work), then i have to decide what i am going to do with the power button, and then i might paint it, i'm thinking matte black, or maybe take some ideas from your project if you have made any progress at the time!
thanks for the tip, i'll try it today and i let you know how it went
development: phone DOES NOT turn on with the soft reset button as i thought, i was sure it did, but after jumping the bat once again, tried the wiring method (not repeating the jump start but wiring it directly to de device pins), and tried to turn it on with soft reset and dind't work, while it does turn on with the power button, wich is broken, so in order to turn it on i cannot have the phone assambled, wich means that in order to try to make it work, i will need to hold the battery attached with my hands, and it is a pain in the.. you know where.
update: i wired the charger i was using to jump start the battery to the pins in the wizard, then held the battery in place with my hand, with a small screwdriver i pushed the broken power button. wizard turned on, IT FINALLY LOADED WINDOWS, but don't rush, i then (with my MOUTH) connected the USB wall charger to the port in the phone, and removed the wiring, i was expecting the goddamn light to turn on and the screen to tell me that my phone was finally charging. I WAS WRONG. then i had to let go because my hand was killing me and it went off
and the damn thing refuses to charge! what could it be????????
2nd update: I AM MACGYVER !
i figured the wiring had given the bat enough power to load windows on its own, so tried once more holding everything together with my hand but without wiring the pins this time, and at last the amber light turned on!!! im so proud of myself lol
SO NOW: device works ok, charges ok, battery has enaugh power to load windows, WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT THE BROKEN POWER BUTTON? i know you can't remap the power function since its hardware, but the screen on/off function might be remapped. soft reset button DOES not turn on the phone, is there any other way of turning it on? or my only option is to take off the voice command button and soldering it where the power button should be?
well, found the little button part that was missing, glued it (yes, GLUED it), and it kinda worked, i had painted the casing already, so i assembled everything back again. i used a folded piece of paper to hold the button still so it won't fall again and i think it was too big cause now its kind of hard to press but i can live with that, what i cannot live with is NO SIGNAL.. i mean, CMON!! are you kiddin me? now that the button works, battery works, phone assembled, and now this?? when i dissassembled the phone i forgot to take out the sim card, so the metal parts that hold it opened a bit, but i pressed them back, the sim in no way loose, so i guess i might have screwed the attenna :S
i've just checked, i can see the sim contacts so... [CENSORED] !!!
also now the screen looks weird.. like if it had less colours, like when you format your pc and haven's installed the graphic drivers yet, 3d effects look funny..
Hey man, have you painted ALL the Wizard parts, on both sides?
'Cause there is one that has a piece of copper board inside. It makes contact with the antenna. Without that contact, you'll never have signal
The piece I'm talking about is the one that has the camera protection, saying "1.3 MP camera". Look at its back and see if there's no paint on a green and golden plate. Remove the paint if it got there (the golden part is the important one, since it makes contact with the antenna).
Good luck man!
hahah lol, no of course i didn't paint both sides! but anyways im gonna take it apart again, clean it, and try again..
done. it had some paintng yes, but they were very tiny spray drops, so i don't think that is, anyway i cleaned it. On the other hand, i found that the antenna is loose on the left side :S what can i do about it?
i got a crash i resetted ther phone .
after that phone works but the screen stays verry dark.
as if the backlight is broken.
i can see verry little on screen since its just so dark.
phoen works i can get phone cals etc but i just cant see a thing.
whats the problem . is my screen broken ?
please explain the word "crash".
did it fell down or did just windows crash?
if windows crashed and it didnt fall down, you can call htc or go to the shop where you bought it.
DN41
i got an sms .
then phone stopped working .
the touch screen didnt work anymore and i had to take the battery out.
i put it back in and turned on phone.
phone worked but screen stayed dark , i can see something things on screen but its verry dark.
now i put it on the charger and battery was goin empty verry fast even thoug it was on the charger it didnt seem to recharge .
while in the charger the phone was getting verry hot also . so i cant do a thing now .
edit .
im thinking isnt it just possible that since the battery looks dead, that the screen just isnt getting enough power to be lighter ?
since both problems came at the same time i guess they must be connected in some way .
i mean is it possible that a new battery solves the problem or isnt it worht ordering a new battery ?
CRashed ...from a window
My phone crashed too... Crashed onto a carpetted floor from a window (about 5 feet) while being charged, and landed on the edge of a barbell. What was it doing there u ask? I wanted to get the best 3g reception thats why. I use it as my main modem/router y'see...
Yes i got a really dark screen too, and two vertical bright lights. the screen was alright, no cracks, nothing. but the buttons was dented since it landed on the barbell(which was on the floor ).
Sent to the shop and told me it'll cost me about 170usd to fix the lcd,..and said it's gonna cost another 50 usd to fix the touch screen. Knowing the shop was b.s'ing since i know the lcd could just be the only one affected so i plan to buy just the lcd. did a few practice disassembly, and eventually after the 3rd disassembly and reassembly the screen was completely dark...even if it did lit up, i cant see any image.. so i guess i'll just get the lcd+touch screen. since i dont wanna go through the hassle of soldering the fine connection anyway, i decided to buy the lcd+touchscreen online cositng about 140usd..
well, obviously mine's a hardware problem.. Buy yeah I'd say that the hd2 is sooooooooo fragile, your hd2 problem might be mainboard related.
ps. still waiting for my replacement lcd+touch.. who knows if mine is motherboard related too(since the buttons get hot, but i can still recieve calls+use as a modem)

if you can see the screen at all, you might check your backlight settings to make sure they didn't reset to like 10%.
Otherwise, I would take it in to get fixed. Sounds like the backlight died.
Have you hard reset to make sure it isn't a software issue?
