Orange business 400, £43+VAT / month, handset price = free.
Not the best deal ever, but not a bad one either, IMHO
Still, prefered my £200 inc for the handset (MDA Pro) + £32.76 for 12 months line rental (all paid so I'm now out of contract  )
is that a joke, mistake, or what , it says
"processor XScale 624 MHz, UMTS (3G) + 4-band GSM, VGA display (not 320x240 as before but 640x480 as in current top models of non-phone Pocket PC devices)"
Universals are 520 aren't they???
All the specs I've seen for the M5000 stated 520 too.
The used the same copy for the MDA Pro too. I guess they speculated and then never changed it.

Orange unveil SPV 2020
By: Anthony Newman, Thursday 6th November 2003, 10:53 GMT
The first Phone Edition device to come to Orange boasts Windows Mobile 2003, Bluetooth, a camera and more.
The Danish branch of European GSM provider Orange has today revealed the latest Microsoft-powered device in their range: the SPV 2020. The device is based on the same HTC Himalaya reference design as the XDA 2.
Meet Orange's SPV 2020
The phone offers tri-band 900/1800/1900 MHz GSM and GPRS, as well as Bluetooth and IR connectivity. The screen is a standard 16-bit transflective TFT display running at 240 x 320, and the package is driven by a 400 MHz Intel XScale processor with 64 MB of RAM. Expansion is in the form of an SDIO-capable SD/MMC slot. Finally, the new SPV includes a VGA digital camera.
The handheld runs Microsoft Windows Mobile Pocket PC 2003 Phone Edition, which has introduced native support for MMS and multiple always-on email accounts, as well as continuing support for POP3 and IMAP4 email, instant messaging, SMS and full web access through Pocket Internet Explorer.
The current SPV (sound, pictures, video) line marked the first commercially-available Windows-powered Smartphone, and currently includes the SPV E100 and the newly-announced SPV E200, which like the SPV 2020 features Bluetooth and an integrated camera. The E200 and 2020 are thus complementary devices.
The SPV 2020 is unlikely to be in the shops before Christmas, as only Danish pricing and availability has yet been announced. Orange have stated a 3,999 DKK price tag, excluding VAT,
Ok Mr G,
I am a man of few words, I said "orange uk to launch xda 2"
in your reply it very clearly says....
'The Danish branch of European GSM provider Orange has today revealed the latest Microsoft-powered device in their range: the SPV 2020'
now correcrt me if i am wrong (and i'm sure your would) but there is a significant difference there - especially if you live in the uk !!!!
so i believe my statement that "No one else seems to have mentioned it , so here is an article published the other day"
isnt too far off the mark
the phrase look before you leap comes to mind !!!!
ANY WAY, WELL DONE, IT SHOWS YOU WERE PAYING ATTENTION !!
i'm a bit gutted about this... since i just got an xdaII and switched from orange to get it i would have held out for an orange release had i known.
oh well... still happy with the xdaII... not the network
@Fais
I'm the same as you - I left Orange after 12 years, just to get the XDA2. While the machine itself is cool, O2 are arse. No customer service quality at all compared with Orange.
Still, I spoke to Orange several times before I switched and asked them about the situation. Nobody mentioned the impending release of the XDA2 on their network, so they lost my loyal custom. No matter. I'll be back to Orange when my o2 contract is up and I can get my XDA unlocked.
Please, Sublimatica, can you tell me about how many months of contract O2 in UK will give the unlock code ?? here in France, it's 6 months ...for all operators .
I think the orange XDA-II only has 32MB of internal ram. If thats the case I'm glad I got mine with O2.
orange are confusing people
first it were released as the spv2020 then it changed name to m1000
and their page dont seem to mention specs like cpu and mem at all
http://orange.dk/nyspv/omspv2020
would suppose they would not be much help if you had an issue with your phone and wanted to solve it over the phone rather then sending the whole unit to them

I haven't tried, tenzin, but I think that we have two options in the UK:
1. We wait until our one-year minimum contract is finished, or;
2. We pay all the remaining monthly contract price in one amount and get an unlock code early.
Either way, as long as the service provider (O2 or Orange) get a year's worth of montly contract from us, they don't mind unlocking the handset.
Well I've had my MDA Vario (Molski 2.26.10.2) for almost a year now but I'm looking at changing providers to Orange and going for the SPV M1300. What I don't want to happen however are issues like the stylus clam breaking, slow processor speed etc etc as I have with my Vario.
Anyone here had their device for quite a while and use it actively on a regular basis (i.e. at least once per hour)? I'd love to know your opinion on whether it's worth signing up for a new contract with one.
Other bonus I can see with it is that Orange are scheduled for Jan 07 for their HSDPA network which the device supports.
Hmmm... *ponders*
hi mate.
well... for me- definatelly nay.
I 've chosen mda vario II on t-mob.
for 37.50 quid I have allowance for 900 minutes and unlimited internet. I paid 40 pounds for handset.
no problems with sa, stylus clam, keyboard or slow processor. this toy is just perfect.
oh... and yes.. i'm using it a lot...
cheers and have a good weekend
I have a Jasjam (same as M3100) and even though I have only had it a few days I have spent 12+ hours on it and it is perfect.
A friend of mine was just in from Milan..
She loved my Hermes so much she wants one.
What is the best place to get it in Milan and what does it cost?
From what I saw online they are over 500 Euro..
Is it cheaper for me to get a Cingular 8525 here and unlock it for her..
Or are there better places to pick one up.
Thanks,
-j
Hi.....I live in Italy (Florence) but I bought an Orange spv m3100 UK four months ago...saved a lot of money and imho it's much better than the official HTC TyTN
the official italian distributor of HTC is DANGGARD. She can bought it online from the ecomm site:
http://www.pocketdevice.it/
this is the preferred place as:
- the price is the same of nomatica and expansys (other 'italian' ecomm site selling the tytn), around 750euro (!!)
- the maintenance is serviced directly from them
i live in italy too (rome) and as "luchino san" I also preferred to buy my hermes in UK (through ebay) and i got a m3100 (better looking than HTC, IMHO). In italy official price is 750 euro but you can find it in some shops at around 650 euro, while through ebay i got it at about 500 euro (including express delivery costs). Only downside: warranty.
"Official way" (1) - "Unofficial way" (2)
No comment about the quality of dangaard service...don't make me laugh!
Sounds like it is cheaper for me to pick it up for her here in the US and unlock it.
Yikes.. 750 Euro...
Direct from Cingular with no Contract is 550 US...
Add in the Conversion rate.. Plus no VAT.. Although Tax is 8.75% or so..
Still a huge savings..
No front Camera on the Cingular one.. but I don't think she cares..
I think she will care instead!
Here in Italy we have 3 carriers with videotelephony
Hi guy
I have an immaculate TyTN (Vodafone v1605) for sale on ebay - starting at 70 pounds. It has had a writeshield on from new and comes with a spare battery and all the original accessories.

Let me know if you are interested.
I also have an immaculate writeshield protected iPAQ2750 with CoPilot Bluetooth GPS. This is a great navigation device with 3.8" display - 128M RAM, 128M ROM and 624Mhz Xscale CPU - probably the fastest PDA produced. I upgraded it with the official HP WM5 upgrade disk (which will be included in the sale). It is starting at 80 pounds.

Paul.
I have the chance to by a universal for $140 or a htc/at&t fuze for $178. Did i make the right choice going with the cooler and cheeper device, even though it lacks the 3.2mp camera, fm radio, gps, g-class wifi, and smaller/slower ram and rom size?
Welcome to forums
Of course it´s worth every cent!!
Universal is one of the best devices ever build by HTC, and to this date still on the top ones!
Go for it!!!
I don't have a UNI but have most of the other HTC devices. How does the data work on AT&T's network? Can it do Edge speeds or just GPRS? I don't think it has the proper radios to do Edge in US.
Thanks.
There are some American models of this great device, and I´m sure you can get it!
The Universal is indeed a great device. Not only does it work as a phone with everything one needs, it also is a great Windows Mobile device.
What I appreaciate is:
- VGA screen
- full usable keyboard
- pretty fast processor
- size compatible with back-pocket of my jeans, yet big enough to actually use the VGA resultion
What I miss:
- only 64MB RAM, too little for WM6.5 builds (or at least to use them properly)
- no GPS
- no High Speed Internet connection
- camera pretty poor and outdated
I got myself a T-Online Ameo very cheap and while this device features all the missing items, regarding the Universal, it has a major flaw: it does not fit in most of trouser's pocket! This means I keep it at home most of the days...
Newer devices may have equal features, better processors, RAM, etc., but they cost around 500-600 Euro, at least 4 times the price of a second hand Universal!
However, you should definitly checkout the new Windows Mobile models from Acer, like the M900. It costs £189 at Expansys and has some impressive specs.
Cheers,
vma

- You can upgrade it to 128MB
- You can use Bluethoot GPS
- 3G is quite quick
- Yes, camera is pretty poot

- I can't upgrade it. I would have to send my Universal to a professional lab, plus I would have to find the right chips. Not exactly something I could do myself, though I am quite familiar with soldering tiny things.
- I use BT GPS, when using my Universal, but it is not nearly as nice as having an integraded GPS module like on my Athena.
- The Athena features a noticable faster internet experience.
Not starting any discussion, just wanted it to be noticed, specially the memory upgrade. If you see how much it will cost you and then add the value or cost of the Universal, you probably might as well swap for a more recent device, unless you happen to get the memory upgrade done by someone you know for little money.
Cheers,
vma

I don't ever remember it offered in the U.S.? What was it called?
Maybe you are right and I got confused with this providers thinking there were from USA:
Dopod 900 / Qtek 9000 / SFR v1640 / Vodafone v1640 / Vodafone VPA IV / T-Mobile MDA Pro / i-mate JASJAR / O2 Xda Exec / Orange SPV M5000 / Grundig GR980 / E-Plus PDA IV

soooooooooo im guessing I won for picking up one with a 8gb mem card for 40 GBP on ebay?
Honestly, I dont think I do much to the universal, I also picked up a kaiser at the same time and that will be my main modding device, I just liked the larger keyboard on the universail...it really looks like something I could write short docs on the move with.
Great choice!
Enjoy your Uni!
Have a read on the Wiki
i just purchased a brand new spv m5000 for 150 im waiting for it to come in the mail. ive downloaded roms and software for it. im going to use it as a backup and a showoff phone. no one knows what it is so i can probably resale for more than what i paid for it.
I say for the price Unis go for these days, depreciating as any device would, and considering what it can do - it's a great device to purchase or upgrade to.

I've used the HTC Universal on AT&T's network and it was just dreadful. Poor reception and only GPRS. AT&T simply doesn't support the frequencies used by the phone and the one that is supported isn't on many towers.
Yesterday my Uni died...
Camera is dead and I cannot reactive the sound in all speakers
But now it's time for a new cell phone. Qtek 9000...black is beautiful
Until there is no comparable device I will use the Uni
