What will happen if I flash Exec with Jamjar ROM? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hi, if I flash the O2 Xda Exec with the i-rate Jarjar ROM...
1. Will I get the silly Jamjar/JarJar name pop up every boot?
2. Will the device be faster/less buggy?
3. Will I lose all my current settings and programs?
4. Where can I download the latest i-mate ROM? It is not possible to register on their web site without a JarJar IMEI number.
5. Will I lose any features (e.g. video calling, MSN, etc.)

The boot screen just says I-Mate on it
I dunno about the O2 rom, but the T-mobile one was buggy as hell!
I'd deff recomend it, well worth doing!
All you'd need to add is the O2 connection settings
Of cause you'd loose all programs etc if you flashed the device, so would have to re-install them.
ftp://xda:[email protected]_JASJAR_ROM_UPGRADE_WWE_11353_137_10301.zip

I'd really lose all programs? I hope this isn't true of the upcoming Xda Exec update. When I had a ROM update for my Windows Mobile 2003 Smartphone, it did it whilst retaining all my settings and progs.
I suppose a backup prog that backed up my settings and files would be the answer... but yet again we're disappointed as there is no such program for WM5!

I was wondering about that also..
Can`t see any mention of a backup function in ActiveSync.
Took hours to set everything up after a hard-reset.

I hear Sunnysoft Backup might work:

I lost my 3G settings on my MDA Pro when I flashed it. I think you should check whether someone else has the settings or whether it's made available online.
Good luck~

@CJsnet
Sunnysoft does work but seems to create duplicate program shortcuts, which is annoying

Thanks. Do all your other settings remain in place though, like preferences, programs, voice dials, etc?

Nope. It's more or less like a hard reset. All information will be lost; and everything will be replaced by the rom that you flashed.

Backing up (Via Activesync) - Am I missing something ?

Please forgive me if am missing something obvious - but I have tried several searches , but seen no mention of this anywhere - on this forum or anywhere for that matter !
I have had an XDA , XDAii , QTEK S100 & A BSQUARE POWER HANDHELD before getting my Exec
Now on all the aforementioned , I am sure Activesync gave me the option to completely Back up / restore my device
Whereas on the Exec this just isn't available as an option :?
Am I missing something REALLY obvious or what ? Please enlighten me !

No, you're not missing something. M$ removed the facility from ActiveSync v.4.x.
Thanks for that !
Riggghhhht ! OK then ....
Who's idea was that ? hope they got a kick up the ass
The Micro$oft design requirement for all WM5 devices to have so-called "Persistent Storage" (flash memory) removed the threat of memory loss with a dead battery.
It appears the backup function is still within ActiveSync v.4.x, but it functions differently depending upon whether a WM5-device or an earlier is detected. With an earlier device, the backup function is there. However, still no excuse for not providing the function for WM5 devices for when the dreaded hard-reset is (too often) *essential* to overcome Microsoft and third-part bugs.
I'm currently using Sunnysoft's Backup Manager. Works reasonably well, but doesn't perform a complete clear then copy back. Instead puts the backed up files on top of what's there now, so you still have to remove the operator's crud that gets put back by the hard-reset.
I'm apalled by microsoft removing the ability to backup a wm5 device. It just stinks!
Does anyone think/know if its possible to fool activesync into doing a backup?
anyone interested in a petition to microsoft, to restore this functionality?
ActiveSync/WM5/backup problems
I have the same problem, you cannot back-up your files with WM5 and Active Sync 4+!! Also it will not automatically allocate memory as in WM3.
I've just bought WM5 and loaded it on my XDAII, looks like I'll have to go back to WM3. Problem I will have of course is restoring my previous settings. Anyone help!
Anyone thinking of upgrading to WM5, have a serious think first. I wish I had!
Regards
Tony
ActiveSync/WM5/backup problems
Problem solved! Thankfully 02 have a WM3 update on their site which will load over WM5. I was then able to restore my back-up file via ActiveSync 4. So goodbye WM5. I'm back with good old WM3. I think I'll wait until I can back-up via ActiveSync 4+? before I look to load WM5 again.
I've learned my lesson, always have a good think first before you update your software!

Thats retarded, what if your phone gets stolen? Will installing ActiveSync 3.8 work?
The best way of backing up in my experience is to sync the device with a PIM such as Outlook. This is because if you backup using activsync, should you need to restore after a ROM upgrade, it oftern doesn't work. You are ok if the file stucture on the device is the same after the upgrade, but if this changes the restore will likely fail!
My guess is this is why MS have pulled this feature.
My advise is to sync with PIM and pull anything else of manually!
Sounds like a workable way of backing up just a few problems:
1 The registry
2 SMS/MMS?
The cemail.vol seems impossible to copy and it looks like the path is hardcoded to the root of the device leaving no SD options or anything.. I was absolutely gutted when I saw no backup option in ASync4.1.
MS really need to get this sorted in their next revision of ASync.
Will installing ActiveSync 3.8 work?
Not with a Windows Mobile 2005 device.. only Async4.x
Guys I just bought Spb Backup for WM5. Its fantastic. Does everything including texts MMS/Registry bla bla.
Puts everything back just the way it was before a hardreset!
Well worth £11!

Few Questions.

i know im a noob but i have a few important questions i need to know.
1st. Can you use wifi without the data plan? I bought a unlocked qtek to use on cingular and i was wondering if using the wifi on my home router was free. I really dont want to see a surprise data charge on my bill lol.
2nd. If i bought my qtek unlocked, does that mean it comes already pre registered with the wifi G or do i have to install the cab i found on xda forums to make it G. Thanks again!

Hi ipodlover77 - welcome to the forum. Using wifi as you describe is free. With some of the newer roms it is already set to G, but if you have the same rom as me (see my signature) it will not and then install the cab you found - if you use the one i made it will affect the wifi settings only
oh, then can you please give me the url of the wifi settings you made? will the settings work on a unlocked qtek, used for cingular? thanks. and also, is it possible to stream youtube videos form the site on ur qtek? and finally, (sorry, i always have a lot of questions ) how would i know if im using cingulars data charge on wifi or my own? when i scan for networks on wifi, will it says like "pay"? thanks again for all the help.

My cab is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=254420&page=15&highlight=wlan
Yes the settings will work on an unlocked qtek used for cingular. You should be able to stream youtube videos via your wifi router although only those that suit your screen size will prob work properly.
You should never have to pay to cingular for using your wifi on your home router - to test this you can switch your phone to flight mode (phone radio off) and wifi will still work. The only time you would have to pay for wifi is when you connect to a pay wifi hotspot and then you would have to subscribe to the service first.
so what is the difference between the wlan g tweak and the wireless plugin tweak? and also after downloading the right one, do i just move it to the memory card via usb and open the .cab over the phone? thanks

Try this then - (from coolsmartphone.com) TinyTube.net continues to get better and better. They've now made it even easier to find, send and watch your fave YouTube videos on your mobile. Take, for example, this YouTube video. Notice the URL - it's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCLYGoM1GrU. Now, if you'd like to watch that on your mobile all you need to do is type http://tinytube.net/watch/RCLYGoM1GrU into the address bar. Just copy the "RCLYGoM1GrU" bit and stick it on the end of http://tinytube.net/watch/ - this can then be used or forwarded to any mobile user via text or email as the address to get the video.
TinyTube fill a very important "gap" that other sites such as Google video have already plugged - being able to convert the Flash-based videos into 3GP format for viewing on mobile devices. TinyTube.net have now added an "SMS this video to a friend" feature for the USA with plans to roll out elsewhere soon.

1st) how do i scan the area for wifi connections? I keep trying to look for "search wireless networks" but i cant find the button. I dont know any connection name or ids etc so im trying to find out how to search for wireless networks, quick and easy.
2nd) what is the fastest rom? Im using the updated qtek firmware and it is VERY slow. And i was wondering if there is a rom, that does everything the qtek rom does but alot faster.
3rd) how do i take that fricken vibration when i send a text message? I hate feelings the vibration for only sending a message.

If you just turn your wifi on via comm manager it will automatically search for you. Others use wififofum http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=1020
Plenty of roms out there - which rom are you using? i.e. the numbers
There is molskis rom that gives you 30mb free ram and farias new 3.2aku rom just to mention a couple. Browse the wizard upgrading for a week or so before deciding to upgrade and you will need to decide if you have a g3 or g4 chip - ipl numbers - .001 = g4
Change your notification settings for messages in settings\sound and notifications not to have vibration.

and also if i turn off my phone. does meschles Wifi G tweak, erase? it says its still installed but are the settings messed up or is it perfectly fine still?
ok I thought of another problem. like I said before I don't have any data plan on my package so I'm surfing wifi over my own home router. ok so I found this really cool site that actually streams the videos to my phones WM. is this costing me data I don't have? the videos streaming url was like mms something. just want to make sure its not costing me money. and lastly do they charge me for downloading stuff from the internet straight to my phone while using my router connection? thanks in advance!! happy thanksgiving everyone!

Wifi Xperia Messenger + Skype (Vodafone branded)

Yes it does but when I installed it, it screwed with the gprs settings. It's fine tho and it works after you put the correct settings back. Best thing to do is to get a registry editor [total commander] and modify the registry so you can see/change the connection settings. Then modify the settings back to vodafone. That prob doesnt make much sense so i'll do a step by step...
1. Download and install total commander on your phone
2. In total commander navigate to \\plugins\registry\HKLM\Comm\ConnMgr\Destinations\My ISP and open ReadOnly and set it to 0
3. Do the same for any others that are in there.
4. Close total commander and go to start-settings-connections-connections.
You should now see that My ISP is now listed (instead of 'this has been blocked' etc.
5. Go into manage existing connections
6. Click edit and make a note of all the details. The username/password is 'web' for both user/pw
7. Under Advanced, click select networks and check to see what they are. Make a note.
8. Now go into Messaging-sms/mms-menu-mms options-servers. Click on Contract MMS and make a note of all those settings.
9. One final thing I would do before you install that, sync your phone with your computer so all your contacts etc are saved, that way if it does screw up you not being able to connect you can just reset storage and go back to the start as if your phone was brand new.
10. Install the program on your phone
11. Now go into each of the settings we looked at above from point 4 and set them back to what they were. You'll notice that a lot of other connections have been made (VFDE Push) etc, to remove these go back into total commander and delete the reg setting for them.
If there's an easier way let me know for the future...
Many thanks Jon_010 - I'll have a go at this tonight!
All is not as simple as I first thought...
One thing i've just noticed (i've only got my X1 at the weekend), since doing this it seems that I am unable to use ie/opera over wap. I only tested over wifi as I assumed this was the problem.
Seems that it's got wifi working as it should, but it kills the use of normal wap. Messenger seems to work ok though both over wap and wifi. I'm gunna look into this a bit more.
I'd hold off doing this unless you're not bothered about losing wap. Maybe I missed a setting when I did it.
OK it appears that its still an issue with windows live that's still blocking it. Does anyone have a original cab file of windows live?
Jon - sorry to hear you had some problems with this. I flashed the ROM in the end with the SE image and the phone is working now.
I don't know where you could get hold of the CAB, you could hard reset as a last resort?

Have you managed to get everything working now? I.e have you got wap working fully along with wifi? The last thing I need to resolve is windows live. I've found a cab but still doesnt appear to be working...
I wouldnt suggest using this as a fix if you're a Vodafone UK customer.

thanks for the help anyway though.

Annoying problem with Sounds & Notifications

Haven't experienced the ringtone changing, but the problem with the ringtone sometimes not ringing is a well documented bug with no fix as yet. Strangely it appears to happen mostly with Duttys 2.1 inc MSVC and not Dutts V2.1 WITHOUT MSVC. If you read the thread on Duttys V2.1 you will see this.
V2.2 is due for release soon and hopefully this bug will be fixed.

There are different ways of doing this. You can use PIM, SPB Backup or Sprite
In future instead of working hard to reinstall everything, why not just use a backup program like SPB Backup 2 or Sprite.
SPB Backup & Sprite are basically the same. You can use either of these to backup all your settings, including programs, ringtones, contacts etc, then if any problems materialise or you hard reset you use the backup file created to restore to your previous settings.
I have been advised by noris08 that when flashing to a new ROM each of them may have some issues and when you restore the apps, some of them will not work and some will generate some new conflicts
This issue has been explained before but either in this forum or somewhere else.
Another option is to backup personal things with PIM and to reinstall all apps from scratch

Had my HD2 a few days, got some questions...

Hi -
I've had my HTC HD2 for a few days now, and I'll be putting my sim card in and switching to full use from tomorrow. My network is Vodafone UK. I just had a few questions and would really appreciate if someone could answer? I have already got through the main stickies and done some tweaks by the way.
1. Vodafone haven't released any official updates for the firmware themselves, and HTC doesn't allow Vodafone UK users to download them of their own website (other than hotfixes). So I just wanted to know, what am I missing out on by being stuck on the original firmware that the phone came with? DO the official updates make a big difference?
2. Auto-rotate seems to only work on some applications. Can I get it working on the home screen and ALL applications?
3. What can I do to improve my typing? I've set it to T9 and I'm slowly adjusting to it but it's still quite slow. Also, when is there anyway to automatically improve grammar? For example when I start sentences they do not automatically start with a capital letter and I have to do that manually...
4. I get an error with the camera/camcorder if Opera 10 Beta is installed. The camera will only work when it's uninstalled. Is there anything I can do to get around this?
5. Any must-have applications/games?
6. Is there anyway I can edit the registry on the HD2 through my PC?
Thank you!
I think if you search ... you will get the answer for most of your questions
1. Official Updates Makes the operating system more stable.... i upgraded to 1.48 and its much more stable.
2. you can add almost all programs to autorotate using BSB tweak (except home screen)
3. Typing is a universal problem ... search and you will find several topics and tweaks
4. Havent tried opera 10 yet... as it doesnt support pinch to zoom (multitouch)...
5. Must have apps (Skyfire.. wayyyyy faster than opera)
must have games (experiment 13, and xtract) both available to download on xda...

Thanks for the quick reply.
1. Do you know if there's anyway for me to get around the Vodafone block and upgrade then?
Also I can't find the setting to disable vibration while typing. Any ideas?
And also, any answer to question 6 which I just added?
Thanks

Hi -
6. Is there anyway I can edit the registry on the HD2 through my PC?
Thank you!

2. Home screen? No. Applications? Yes.
Refer to tips thread:

3. There are tips in the above thread. Phone will auto-capitalize after a full stop. Pressing space 2 times will put a . and then a space.
6. Not that I know of.

1.Yes. Gold card. I haven't done it, but browse this forum, there are plenty instructions.
2.Start button > Settings > Personalize (1st option) > Vibration
Translated from PT menus so names might not be accurate.

Thank you again for the answers.
Sorted out the vibration now.
Regarding the gold card and changing the ROM... how would I pick a ROM to change to? And also, if I do change ROMS will I lose all my data?
Thanks

You will loose all data. Backup first.
There are ROMs for all tastes. Like picking a wallpaper, you must choose one yourself.
My advice would be, install the HTC original ROM (1.48).

Thank you. What is the recommended way of backing up before updating ROM?
Also, will updating to the official ROM include the radio ROM too or would I have to do that separately?
And finally... how would I download the official ROM still, even after gold card, surely the phone would still have a Vodafone serial number?
The Radio is probably not included in the rom.
You can download the rom from HTC site.
Ways to backup? Active Sync, MyPhone, GMail, etc (I use gmail for contacts and calendar for e.g. and do the rest by hand)
