JasJar: What are the apps installed upon hard reset on the HTC Universal, and where can I download them to selectively install? I know they're here somewhere (another post refered to them), and I'm not being lazy - I have searched extensively.
First, go here
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_FTP_Site
Scroll to the bottom of the page and under Universal, open the uploads ftp link. In there, open the Extended ROMs folder. Most of the ext-Rom cabs are in the joe bongo.zip files in this ftp directory.

How do I install a cab file please.?On my Mda 2 ?I installed the mppc 2003 SE merged rom up date (from this site), on my MDA 2 and it worked oK for a couple of days then the device hard reset itself and there was no camera soft ware on it anymore. I thought if I installed the camera software on its own from this site that might be the answer. But it is in cab file form and I DONT KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN/ can anyone help please?
Installing a CAB file is easy...with ActiveSync, drag the file from your PC to your PDA (I drag them to the windows dir, but not sure if this is really necessary).
Then, go to your PDA, to the dir where you dropped the CAB, and just click it once...that is all.
About your other probs, I have no idea...I guess I need more info.
Good luck.
more details about installing cab files?
thanks for your answer. I'm hopeful - but I'm really not very technical. Can I ask more details? When I open the "camera cab file" I get a screen full of little icons all the same. Is each of these a seperate cab file? - do I open the "camera cab" folder, and then drag each one of these little icons seperately to my pocket pc document folder. Or should I NOT open the "camera" folder but just drag the WHOLE folder into my pocket pc document folder - and then active sync with my mda 2. I wish there was a site where I could see the instrucions clearly - with DIAGAMMEs! is there such a site? thanks...
copy the whole cab file
this is what i get in my extended_rom folder when i soft reset after a hard reset.......
what do the following files do or consist of:
Autorun.exe
Setup.exe
TPDisable.exe
TPEnable.exe
Default_ArcsoftMMS-2.0.0.22-ma_ENU.cab
Default_avcelic_imei_2664_range.CAB
Default_BT_COM_PORT0.CAB
Default_Caller_ID_Magician_RC13.CAB
Default_Delete_vdisk.CAB
Default_ImateV3.11.3.0.cab
Default_JMM101257_wwe_1004.CAB
Default_KSE_Fax_v2.09_unremovable.CAB
Default_PhonePad_Magician_RC12.CAB
Default_SIMAutoConfig1.8.arm.CAB
Default_SkypeForPocketPC.CAB
Default_SmartDialing_Magician_RC13.CAB
Default_Version.sa.CAB
And what would happen if i was to delete all these files from my jam after backing them up....would they show up again on the next hard reset...and how can i delete this folder....
The CAB files in the Extended ROM are either applications or settings which are auto-installed (or at least, should be) by the device after every hard reset. They're provider-specific, for instance O2 ships its devices with their own ExtROM, containing some useful stuff, some settings files, and a load of crap which everyone hates (but fortunately their install routine allows for a Corporate Install which will skip all of that installation step if you have a Corporate code).
The only way to remove these files is to cook your ROM and reflash your phone, as they're held in nonvolatile memory.
TPDisable and TPEnable disable and enable the ability to tap the screen to hit buttons (so you can't tap Cancel on the screen while the files are installing!)
Most of the filenames are pretty self-explanatory, and Autorun being the first app run on a boot, most likely runs the custom Setup app, which then installs all the CABs.
thnx for the info dude...
No problems.
Hey guys,
I just got the 8525 last week and so far I like it. I have been searching the net and p2p for games, programs, etc but I am a lil confused. I tried loading .rar files but they dont work and when I load software then remove it I get an exe error when I have to perform a soft reboot. Can anyone help me with info on what apps, games, etc I can load onto this phone? I have several of games and apps that I found on the net I can share if someone can direct me to an upload link.
Also I have the tomtom 6 but only with Guam maps, does anyone know how I can get USA maps.
Thanks brotha.
Welcome to the forum!
First, just to make it clear (I am not accusing you of anything but this particular forum name sometimes confuses new users) we do not discuss warez and cracks here.
The 'hacking' part refers to exploiting hidden functionality of the phones and not defeating software protection.
Now, here is a quick explanation on software installation on Windows Mobile based devices:
1) If you download ZIP, RAR or EXE file you need to unpack and run it on a PC while the phone is connected through ActiveSync. There are programs (including freeware) that can open RAR and ZIP files on the device, but chances are they will still contain a program that needs to be ran on the PC.
2) If you have a CAB file (www.freecabs.de lets you download free software in CAB format straight to your phone) you need to open file explorer and click on it to install.
when I load software then remove it I get an exe error when I have to perform a soft reboot

Not quite sure what you mean by this. If you installed some software, then uninstalled it and now you are getting a message at start up that some file can not be found, open file explorer (on the phone), navigate to windows\startup and see if there is any unnecessary shortcut there. If so delete it.
Good luck!

You gotta check the UC thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=366337
Cheers for the reply.
I had a look at the thread but as far as I could gather that shows you how to load software from the storage card. The software i have is security software so it needs to be installed on the device.
Does anyone know of a program to open .nb files. I tried winimage as it opened the extendROM.nb of my P3300 but it wont open windows.nb of a polaris rom.
I recommend using sashimi autoinstaller. It is very easy to use in order to load xml, reg, cab, exe...and files to root or storage card. Just pull files to the right directories. Of course you can combine with mortscript, UC...
you can not find the software here (sashimi was banned, do not why) but you can google it.

sashimi wasn't banned... the author decided to set up shop somewhere else.
www.winmo-experts.com has the latest version
Oh, my mistake then. When I look at his posts, below the nickname says banned and many of the post were deleted.
Anyway is a great software !
Gurus,
I tried searching for this but in vain. I keep flashing all the great roms posted here frequently. And every time i have to configure my email accounts from scratch and this is a real pain. Is there any way to backup the settings like we do in PIM backup and restore upon reflashing the ROM'S?
Help greatly appreciated...
Thanks,
Raj

Same here, what is best method to backup & restore phone settings regardless of what ROM we are using.
What about Microsoft my phone?
get makisu from HERE
(its a plugin to sashimi, but it will run standalone too)
run it, (it may take a few moments to start, be patient) enter your account details, add as many as you like, including wifi settings
tutorial video HERE
copy the xml file it creates (created mine as program files/makisu/makisu.xml)
get the microsoft cabinet sdk from HERE
extract it, and in the BIN folder is an .exe file called makecab.exe
I coppied that file out to its own folder, i dont use anuthing else in the sdk.
put makecab.exe and makisu.xml in a folder together, rename the xml to _setup.xml
open a command line window, and browse to that folder.
(Useful tip for vista/7, with the folder open on screen, hold shift and right click, you will get the option to 'open command window here')
issue the command
makecab /D COMPRESS=OFF _setup.xml mail.cab
(set mail.cab to whatever.cab name you want)
Thats it, copy the cab to your phone and run it when you need to set up your email accounts (and wifi if you set that too, very handy, i've automated 5 email accounts and 3 wifi networks)
(You could also just stop at the xml stage, and next time you hard reset, instal makisu and then choose 'provision xml' and browse to the makisu.xml file and it will install the settings.)
@samsamuel - I've just found this post (after searching for "rename email account"!!) and it's awesome.....just what I've been looking for!! Now I can reload my mail settings whenever I flash....assuming I can find a way to rename the current (incorrect) mail account I just added, otherwise I'll have to go for the delete/re-create option
Thanks again for posting about "makisu" - shame I have to register on yet another forum I'll never use just to get it....unless it's hidden on XDA somewhere?
Mark.
This is all that you guys need.
This will take care of provisioning for Wi-Fi Configs, Email Configs and Certificates.

After you make the xml with the program, how do you access it on the phone for restoration of settings? I don't need it right now but I am making xml's since I have had to hard reset my phone 4x already (and not because I was flashing a ROM) and re-creating all the settings is such a pain. I read into the sashimi and makisu but those apps make my head spin. There has to be a simpler way. Thanks in advance.
Edit: I think I got it. Either I use Makisu to access the xml or make the cab using the post above. If I make the cab and I want to use Quick cab (since it is much easier to use), where does the file install? \Windows?? It was unclear from the previous post since the instructions are for a different cab making utility.

it doesnt install any files anywhere, not in teh way you mean, its just setting/changing/applying settings. Think of the xml file as a script that makes changes as it runs.
For me, i have makisu in my autoinstall folder, so it gets installed at hard reset, and i run teh xml file (also on my sd card) manually when i am ready to apply it. (I flash a lot, so sometimes i dont want email setting up, because i am gonna flash again in a few minutes).
I no longer bother creating the cab, because with the xml file you can just open it in notepad and add anotehr email account, make other small adjustments, whatever, which you cant do with a cab, you have to rebuild the whole thing from scratch. (for some reason wince cab manager cant open that cab.)
Well if you are on a custom rom, every chef support some form of UC or the other (User Customization).
In addition to Sashimi / Makisu you can also use SDConfig.txt & XDA_UC if your ROM supports it.
Google them and you'll find more info.
This looked like it would do the trick. When I run it I get a visual basic error. I have netcf v4 installed. Is there another file required to make this run?
