Hi,
Can anybody tell me the benefits of upgrading the ROM version? I have Spain's Telefonica Movistar XDA (branded as TSM 400) with ROM Version 3.18.10 ESP dated 08/15/03. I'm thinking of upgrading mainly to remove the simlock since I live most of the time in France and I'd like to put an Orange simcard in it.
However, what are the additional benefits of upgrading? I know it's geek and it's cool, but is it really worth the risk? I've read many posts from frustrated users than have ended up with useless PDAs and I don't really feel like it.
But I'm sure I'm missing something important here. Why are you guys taking all that hassle to upgrade? Convince me!!

if you just want to unlock it then this site have a program which if you have a seriel sync cable you can unlock your xda without
flashing or burning anything on your device
a possible reason beside the geekfactor to upgrade ones rom could be that you can place programs you like to use in the rom so they dont take up any of your ram
if you dont mess around with newer radiostacks
and have a sdcard and a sdcard reader for your pc you should not end up with a dead device
and backing up your current rom is a good idea
personaly i havent upgraded yet
but my device were never locked and
i have a 256MB sdcard so i got ok room for
programs for now

I do have the card reader and I have already a backup of my ROM.
I'm using a 128Mb card so I don't have storage problems (yet), but I guess programs run faster from ROM than from the SD card...
Risks aside, I use the Spanish dictionnary for SMS writting quite a lot and if I upgrade to an English version I'm afraid I'd lose it... do you (or other readers) know if there's a tool to extract the Dictionnary from a localized ROM and make it available in the ENG versions? That'd be so cool...

well they are not expensive

yep but since the sdcard is not a part of the "working" mem but a part of the storage mem it's only starting them which is slower kinda like having a slower harddisk on a pc

read about transfering dictonary files from windows and adding them to their pda and that way changing the language of the dic that way but i also read people who end up messing their spellchecking that way so no dic file is being used the same thing should work on using the dic file from another language version of the xda software[/quote]
Hello XDA-Users.
Now i´ve got my new internet connection and i think it´s time to share it with you. I set up a ROMkitchen for the good old XDA I.
It might me an alternative to the kitchen of Yorch.
In the moment i would say my kitchen is not perfect, but who is perfect?
The workspaces are limited, since i´m only using an good old PII with 266Mhz and 64MB RAM. Maybe in the future i will upgrade it.
Also there is a limitation in "Opening Hours". It will be available from Mo. - Fr, 8pm - 8am and all of the weekend. Timezone is Europe / Berlin.
If you´re out of time you will see it soon, with an different layout.....
If there are problems, hints, or wishes concernign the kitchen, please write me an PM.

The software are the demo-Version, so you need to registrate dem to use it unlimited....

That´s what i meant with poor Hardware.
Just in teh moment i´ve got:
Load Averages 3.66 3.81 3.03
I think it will be better using an faster processor and more RAM.
If anyone have better hardware and a fine Internetconnection, I will help to transfer this Kitchen to him.
I preffer an Debian Linux to install it....

wow how did u manage to fit Voice Command and Calligrapher in there,, not sure if they work as i an still cooking mine (as i type) but when i chech/uncheck the s/w it does not affect the rom usage???

If those file sizes are correct they wont fit into the available space, I have chosen the voice command and the available space stays the same, it will be interesting to see what kind of it produces. Regarding the tomtom, how will the reg code work if its in rom, and also how will it be affected when updates from tomtom have to be applied.

also no point in putting tomtom gps in as when you come to update it you wont be able to meaning a new rom will have to be cooked without this in
cant get connect 4 or snake to work even with the runtime file things they just dont load up

If you want to add software that requires a key, you have to add the complete "group" firts. if you don`t select "add Software that needs to register" the sotware won´t be added, and because of this, the required space won´t change....

I just cooked my own rom, and added GPRS-Monitor and Pocketplus. Pocketplus is installed correctly, including the today-plugin, GPRS-Monitor works, but without the today-plugin. Is there anybody out who can tell me how to get the plugin?

All this ROMS are working with all the devices. Difference between Europe and USA are the radio stacks, that ar not included with the ROM...

I am wondering, if anybody has ever found out, if it would be possible to "reformat" the Wizard in oder to eliminate the space for the Extended Rom?
I do not need it and the almost 10 MB more would be just perfect to encrase the space of the first partition (to get all 64 MB from the Rom for programs in one partition).
Any ideas??

have you tried a search? there's tons of threads on modifying your Wizard Extended Rom if you're using a pre-AKU2 ROM. Here's one thread on modifying ExtROM when using AKU2:

Note that you won't gain any additional space from deleting bits in the Extended Rom, but certainly you could replace bits with applications of your own which would otherwise take up space in the user section of the persistent storage.
Edit: there was a thread about about the AKU2 extrom editing %)

From what I've read, you can only delete stuff (or do anything with) the extended rom if your OS rom version is LESS than 2.x. If it's 2.x (and yours is), it's locked and you can't do anything with it. As I understand it, there are people working on this, patience would probably be appreciated.

Unlocking the CID has NOTHING to do with unlocking the ExtROM (nor has is anything to do with SIM Unlock).
You are running the AKU2 ROM (as am I). Until now there is NO solution on making the ExtROM writable on all 1.6 roms and above (your rom is a 2.x rom).
You can try to change it via a very complicated way as mentioned in the thread wich is mentioned above.
Just be patient (like te rest of us) Buzz_lightyear is working on it, but until now it has been hard to extract a proper bootloader from the wizard. I send buz my bootloader last week and if that one is useable he might be working on it right now.

erm.. that thread deals specifically with being able to alter the contents of the ExtROM - which is part of what you want, no?
The other part of what you want - which is to say to re-allocate memory dedicated for ROM/ExtROM storage to user data storage, is an entirely different matter.. last I checked

I'm not a flamer, but I've been cracking my head with the AKU2 Disk on Chip protection for the whole goddamn weekend...
Wizard/Prophet and probably Charmer all have this new protection. The bootloader has been completly changed, the memory structure also changed. IT'S not a trivial problem, buzz and me been looking at it and the password is not visible as it was...
Please respect the work of others. If your not happy about it, write your own tool.

I would like to upgrade to the latest i-mate rom ( i think ) i don't know any differences with any other roms etc... ive been looking on the other threads maybe if my question has been answered with someone else... i can get pointed to a proper thread, i just want to know what steps i should take to upgrade my rom, i dont wanna lose any data, not that i have much id like to backup my contacts basically thats the most important, also.. since i dont have money for a 128 card right now would it be possible to load someone elses backed up tmobile mda rom ? if they zipped it up and sent it so i can restore it when i get a msd card.. any help is greatly appreciated , thanks in advance.
Copy your contacts by ActiveSyncing them to a PC, or copy your pim.vol (in the root of your Device) to your SD card and upgrade it.

Ah okay now... which rom should I try out first ? and... don't i need to CID unlock it? i'm trying to find a good thread on the upgrade procedures and the best rom to try first.
Best rom...best rom..... the Rom you choose is a personal choice (and yes, you need to CID unlock first IF you want to upgrade to a Rom of another manufacturer, if you have lets say T-Mobile and you want to upgrade to another T-Mobile Rom, you don't have to CID unlock your Wizard).
I like the Qtek Roms myself, but then again, I only use Dutch Roms, not WWE (WorldWideEnglish) Roms, so I have to make a choice between T-Mobile or Qtek and then the choice is simple in my opinion
If you don't know anything about upgrading, my opinion is, try soms official Roms first, then you know what the deal is and then you can make a choice if you maybe want to use a customized Rom like the Mr. Clean Roms for example.

Ah thanks for the info... i tried a beta 2.24 rom i think... its pretty nice, i personally cant tell much of a difference,, connmgr is different has more options etc... im thinking of trying mr clean 2.3 is the latest right ? and if i get this does it include all the office apps and such ?
a second question... i dont like the wifi apps included and i noticed an AXIM dell PPC with WM5 had a nice wifi config app/wifi AP finder, and noticed it was made by Hi Tech Computer (HTC) any way to copy this or use it on my phone ?

is it because while you are trying to update ur radio rom, the process didnt complete and ur ipaq stuck at HP logo startup??
if yes, try to reinstall the radio rom again. BUT first of all, u need to stop all those running programs on ur pc by using taskmanager on ur pc. after u cleanup all those running programs, then reinstall the radio rom again.. let me know whether it success or not.. thx..

I swear to god,I tried to upgrade & flash the Radio.nbf,but it didn't work coz the upgrade tool always was warnning " xxxx is error",and the upgradeing just stuck on the bootloader mode,****! This ****ing stuff really drives me crazy!
have u end all those running programs on ur task manager (PC).. sounds like very simple, but it will affect ur upgrade process significantly..

We have a hw6900 Series, A propeitary device, not like the wizard, hermes, ......
Our devices are CID Locked, etc, As far as upgrade via minisd, don't count on it unless you have a fully working device, you will end up at the cal checksum screen, hell even if you did have a fully working device, it still may not work, I have already posted how to at least backup rom to minisd, as far as flashing through mini sd, do not count on it, I have downloaded damn near every sable program out there and beetles. Nothing, NO GSM, If your GSM is fried then, You have a paperweight, you can still use the os, don't count on it as a daily device. Email me if you have any questions, I can point you to all the tools you need,
Serious man, first thing first, we don't even have a rom to flash via sd in the first place.
