problem downloading and installing cab files on Htc Wizard

Hi i must be doing something incredibley stupid but i can't work out what! I click to download a cab file it downloads it as zip file onto my laptop I open this file which then opens about six other files I transfer them to my Wizard and double click on them and the wizard asks me what program to open the file with ?
Please help what idiot thing am i doing wrong?

Transfer the CAB file to your device as one file, do not unpack it.
Then run the CAB file on your device.

Extract .dll from .cab

Excuse me for beeing a newbie, but can't seem to fin any way to extract the .dll and .gif files from a cab file. For example I downloaded CrossbowPhonepad.zip from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=292014&highlight=media+player+skin
But I'm not quite happy with the way it looks and I would like to start to play and alter with it. But when I extract the .Cab file all i get is strange .012-fil and so on. And of course the .XML file where you se how the .dll and .gif files shall be installed.
How to I extract them (.dll and . gif) from the .Cab file??
I'v tried Winrar, Winace, Total commander.
Please Help

the simplist way
Have you tried cabdump.pl (it can be found on the XDA-Wiki, main wiki page->complete tool list -> RomTools->cabdump.pl)
But I've found the simplest way is to install the cab on your device, and then copy the files you're interested in to your pc.

There is an excellent, easy to use program called MSCEInf that allows you to work with CAB files, including drag and drop extraction of files - with their original names - from CAB installation files. It's available here:

It's developed by a Frenchman named Benoît Thonnart.

You should also try WinCE Cab Manager.
But generally WinRar works fine. The files in the cab are simply renamed to 8.3 convention with extension showing the file number. Extract the xml and you will see what name belongs to what file. Just extract and rename.

if it's a rtf file then it's not a program but a text doc

yust copy the file to your PDA.....

I think someone made a mess here. This file only contains a picture (yes picture) of a list of files apparently extracted from a cab .
If you have the original cab file and want to install it, just copy to PPC then click on it in file explorer.
This may not work if the cab was not designed for your OS.

why the dll file by dumped is larger than the file in phone??

here is a problem.
i use viewimgfs.exe to get the dll file from the dump.bin.
it is work good.
but after i got the dll file , i found the dumped dll file is larger than it in the phone.
who can tell me why??? and how should i get the correct dll file.

this is normal.
You haven't files in ROM at all.
You have ROM Modules.
Creation time, file size, attributes were saved in ROM from original file, but not used.
So don't worry.

but now i want ask u how to get a correct length dll file from the dumped bin file.
it is because that i want get only a dll file which i want to modfiy.eg ril.dll then , when i modified the dll,i consider to use the modified dll file to cover(replace) the dll in the phone.please tell me how to do that.thanks

Unable to install repacked CAB file.

I have a strange problem with the repacked cab files.
I use CabLib for compression and extraction.
This lib can extract and compress cab's without any problems, but the problem starts with old cabs (with binary inf file *.000). Repacked cab are not installed by wceload. It's just prints "Installation was unsuccessful".
However, if you do the same thing with the "new" cab's (with _setup.xml) they will work fine.
And now I'm stuck. What is the trick with those files? Are the .000 file should be at the specific offset?
One workaround of this, is based on .000 file generate _setup.xml... but i really don't want to do that

Ok, i've figured it out, as i suspect, the .000 file should be the first in the cab, but i was compresing directory. Thanks for the help anyway
