Hi everyone,
so I'm determined to learn how to use my Jasjar like a one-handed device, even though the form factor does not lend to it.
I know it's not meant to be a one-handed device... but I think it could be with the right software and workflow.
Yes, the Jasjar could use more face buttons, the screen moved up a little bit so your thumb falls right on it, an LCD screen on the flip-side with a numeric pad like the Nokia Communicator, etc... but I think it could still be salvaged, so to speak
One of the things I admire about the Treo is that it can easily be used one-handed, and the main reason for this is that the calendar / mail buttons and directional button allow you to navigate everthing you need... multiple presses of the calendar button switch between day / week / month view... a handy feature.
The side buttons on the Jasjar are not big or accessible enough to be usable in this way. However, I'm thinking that I could remap the directional buttons to calendar, mail, etc... to make it a little more usable one handed.
Just for phone calls, I could get a Jabra BT800 so I don't have to open the phone to see who's calling, but that doesn't solve the problem for the calendar or email.
To my knowledge, there are no other devices on the market that have the Jasjar's power (the Treo 650 is apparently more unstable than Windows Mobile 5, it has no built-in WiFi, the Treo 700w has a 240 x 240 screen, also no built-in WiFi, the Nokia E61 takes Mini-SD cards, and that hurts the max capacity, the K-Jam and PPC 6700 don't have the directional buttons near the middle so they are not as friendly to one-handed use, the Nokia Communicator doesn't have vibrate, etc...) and I can't really find something with the Jasjar's feature set with the Treo's usability.
Anyone had experience with this ? Can you suggest any software / shortcuts / workflows ?
Thanks !
WIsbarAdvance2 and WAD make the desktop awesome for large thumb-click icons which covers off a LOAD of issues.
@ikaris,
sorry mate the Treo 650 is much more stable than the JJ/WM5! Also my Treo is on for three days (24hrs a day) before it needs to be re-charged, unlike my Exec which run out off puff in about 15 hours. M$ got help from Palm to design new UI features of the Treo 700w as the Treo 650 is so easy to use one-handed. The Nokia 9500 is even more stable still, I only needed to reset it about twice in a year!
I was considering the Treo 650, but the lack of Bluetooth 1.2+, Wifi, limited RAM (even though the Jasjar is pretty close in free ram...)
I've heard bad things about the Enfora sled...
but I just love the simple one-handed usability of the Treo.
The 700w is nice, but the 240x240 screen and lack of integrated Wifi is killing me ! What were they thinking ?!
Hi guys,
what's the big advantage of k-Jam vs Jam?
I've got the Jam and I'm thinking about changing it with the k-Jam but I don't know if there is a real and valid motivations (money/features)...
P.S: The EDGE it's the big advantage I'd like to have...
there are good and bad points to compare,
however, i could not survive without the k-jam keyboard.
But now that i think about it,
A2DP is now available for jam but not for K-Jam
I went from C500 to Jam and then because I couldn't love the Jam, to the K-Jam.
For me, the keyboard is the big obvious plus for the K-Jam, but also the soft keys.
The two at the top of the screen can be mapped to Close and Start which greatly facilitated one handed use. Wi-Fi is very handy for me.
The voice dialing is much better on my QTek 9100 (tag based) than my MDA Mini (fonix) and it works over bluetooth. The persistant storage is handy. If you're ever away from home and run the Jam's battery out, then you lose all of your contacts (I appreciate that you can back the Jams contacts up but that really slows down reboots, too). The battery life is much better on K-Jam (if you're not doing much Wi-fi). Due to the keyboard, you input data to the K-Jam whilst walking (no one handed SMS like smartphone, though).
The minus' are that the K Jam can be a bit sluggish. It is definitely too slow for Skype wheras the Jam could Skype with noise reduction and browse using IE at the same time. Depending on how you put the 9100 in the pouch, when you go to answer a call, the screen might change orientation twice (due to the magnets in the pouch) before you can answer the call. Due to the Jam's stylus dependancy, you can't input data whilst walking (at least I couldn't). The Jam feels better in hand because of it's metal casing and smoother lines.
On balance, I think that the K-Jam is much better (or rather much more suitable for me), but the guy that sits next to me much prefers his Jam due to it's smaller size :-\
Your milage may vary

Hi
I just got my Tmobile Wing as a replacement for my Dopod D810 (Trinity), it's lovely and the battery life is great! However, I'm just wondering if it's just me or all the Herald variants, I'm quite annoyed but its semi-automatic spring driven keyboard and looks like mine wiggles a bit and slightly elevated on the keyboard itself (when not slided out), i found it too annoying when i tap my fingers on the screen like when i'm using Phonepad and i can barely feel it wiggles and it knocks the front panel housing (i don't what should be the term) to the keyboard panel.
Any one with the same case?
I would be very thankful if you happen to know any fix and post it here.
Thanks!
Couldn't find a charmer casing on fleabay so got a prophet one - it fits, and I've fitted the keypad membrand from a prophet too.
The send / end keys map correctly, the softkeys are reversed. Can anyone explain how I can extract from a prophet rom the keypad drivers and sort this out? Don't want to flash a prophet rom as I've read that will brick the device.
Thanks.
M.S
As far as I remember Charmer does not have Softkeys. How are you able to use them, even though you have the Prophet casing?

Although charmer does not have the soft buttons, they are there on the screen. When pressing the soft key button on the keypad from a prophet, it presses the opposite softkey. The mainboard is pretty much identical in shape so fits fine. So I would think with the correct driver / mapping it will work correctly.

p.s just to be clear, I have also fitted a prophet keypad membrane PCB to the charmer board hence having softkey buttons.

Any help? Or should I ask in the prophet forum since it's the prophet keypad driver i need?
M.S
Better ask there. Or take a prophet ROM and extract the driver.

Yep I guessed that would be the way forward but extracting drivers is over my head!

I owned diamond and want to get hTC HD or Sony X1.
What is your comment??
SCREEN:which WVGA is better?
Navigation button: lack of navigaton button on HD, is it problematic??
GPS lagging: which is better?
Video with coremediaplayer:which is better?
Thanks!
I bought a Xperia and tested a touch HD of a friend. I've returned the Xperia and bought the touch HD. Now I undesrtand the success of the iphone etc..the screen size is what really maters!. Apart form that, the xperia is still quite buggy, while the touch HD is buillt on a proven platform, all the touch devices made by HTC. Altough the Xperia is made by HTC as well, looks that HTC has let Sony to "drown" in the waters of WM because what really makes HTC phones useable is their own tweaks to WM that make the difference, like: The bluetooth handsfree profile works, the phone does not hang (or not so often) the wifi does not drain all the battery...Sony still has a long way to go until they are able to customize thier WM handsets to make them useable. If only they had Symbian UIQ to live longer...
By the way I tested Tom Tom 6.0 in both and the GPS works more or less the same on both (a bit faster in the HD). You will not miss the navigation buttons at all, in fact I find the optical joystick in the X1 horrible and the hardware 4 way keys are so small that I've never used them. The only strong point about the X1 is the hardware QWERTY keyboard but for moderate typing (emails, IM), the onscreen keyboard of the HD is sufficent because the buttons are big enough in the 3.8 inch screen.

Is it easy to use a phone without natvigation button?
Can you play games??
Well..i use the phone mostly to work and speak...For that I have my Nintendo Ds..
i had the xperia and gave it back within a week. so many issues like system crashes, active sync not working on vista, slide mechanism flimsy...list goes on and on. i ordered my hd this morning
The experia has a small(ish) screen, I cannot see it very clearly. Also imho the slide isnt a great achievement, there is a certain amount of 'wobble' in the mechanism.
The touchscreen is good but not better than the HD.
But you need to ask yourself what you want to do with it.
I've just ordered the HD
Hello
A Friend from me have the X1, and I have the Touch HD.
And Im happy I have not the X1
