My Jam keeps soft resetting - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

I've had the Vodaphone VPA for about 2 months now. Starting about 2 weeks ago it has begun to do soft resets when I try to power it up. Sometimes 1 in 10 power ups will reset, sometimes 1 in 3. I have found no logic or reason to the madness. The problem started under WWE 1.11 ROM and still happens under the new WWE 1.12 ROM... any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I too am having reset problems with the 1.11 Rom. Never had thi problem with the old 1.03 ROM...
But it only happens when I charge it via the wall socket, and unplug it, it will soft reset...no problem when i charge via USB...dunno why, dunno if it's a 1.11 problem...but I guess i'll just stick to USB charging then, no problem with that.

But mine will actually do that on the road. I'll pull it out of my pocket to check the time or something, and boom... reset. I've now started to look at my device before powering it on to see if the lights are blinking (meaning it might still be active) or if they are off (meaning that the thing has already crashed and is just waiting for the power on)... I don't know... I'm kinda lost on this one. Any other thoughts?

hmmm... the mystery deepens... It did it to me 3 times today. I have noticed that the lights will not flash prior to when it resets. So something is killing it while it is out of my hands (I've never had it do anything while I'm actually working on it.) I also noticed that 2 of the three times I set it down to look at something and it had crashed by the time I tried to pick it up 20 seconds later. I'm still experimenting... right now I have removed my 1GB SD card and am looking to see if the problem still exists.
Still hoping that somebody who reads this will have a magic pill for my problems

Oh well... that experiment didn't last long... 2 more resets in the last 4 hours without the memory card... could it just be that my phone is shot?

Has it died??

My O2 XDAII is 10 weeks old. After using the internet and the screen freezing I SOFT-RESET it. Now the screen will only flash with the O2 logo between the backlight coming on and off and a few letters/numbers at the bottom right of the screen. Ive never had any problems before...I cant soft-reset, hard-reset or (it seems) to be able to charge it. The only way in which it stops 'flashing' is to take out the battery. Is there anything I can do at home?? (as you probably guessed Im a novice at all this!)
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Many thanks, Rob
This happened to me just yesterday, although It happened in different circumstances. Baiscally, I went to turn the phone on and it wouldn't (with any button.) I tried a soft reset and all that happened was the O2 screen appeared with the backlight flashing on and off every 10secs.
Before trying a hard reset I waited to see what would happen when i connected it to the cradle at work. Soon as I connected it. it switched back on, but it was as if it had done a hard reset (ie everything I have installed was erased. Good job I made a backup!).
Basically, it seemed to rectify the problem once connected to the cradle, which hasn't happened to you I know, but i thought I'd let you know that I got the same "symptoms".

XDA2 totalled

Here's what happened. The other day my XDA2 was working just fine, then all of sudden it started freezing up, bad. In the end in would just get stuck generally about a minute or so after a soft-reset.
I decided to do a hard-reset to try and fix the problem, guess what, it still freezes up anywhere between 20 seconds up to 4 minutes from a hard-reset.
the installed rom is
R 1.10.00
G 1337.18
D 1.52.00WWE
anyone have an idea what's wrong with it, hardware perhaps? any similar cases?
A wild suggestion to try to fix it...
If you already do not do this... make sure you request a PIN for Phone use. I have seen over here the problem as there was no signal, so the device hangs while waiting, giving you the impressoin it is dead.
My friend had his fixed this way
Nope the SIM doesn't seem to be the problem...
I've tried without the sim and with a different one didn't help one bit.....
thnx for the reply anyways
I finally got it connected to ActiveSync again, it still froze up but I found that i can browse the device anyway with my pc...
I guess this means I can also try and install a new ROM too. I'll let you guys know how it turned out
Alright I got it fixed
Here's what happened
I managed to get it into bootloader mode (power + action + stylus)
and then it was a simple procedure of upgrading or re-installing the rom
It seems that a corrupt rom was the cause of the problems

Hard Reset

my 1 week old Imate almost everyday gives me a black screen with no response what so ever from its buttons. even removing the battery does not help! I have to then hard reset the damn thing inorder for it to be back in business.
Any thoughts
note: running both firmwares didnt help 1.72 and 1.66
Take off either wisbar or spb software, (if you have any installed). When I used to have wisbar advance and today plus running together, somehow they always trigger a hard reset. Using one or the other helps. I'm using today plus 2.0 only because it has its own task manager.
hm..
I also han Hard Reset
I had installed Spb Pocket Plus,is this a problem?
AND plz. Everyone WHO had HARD RESET on I-mate/XDA2/Qtec 2020/MDA 2 TELL US WHAT PROGRAMM was a case of Hard Reset
My same old story...
After a week of usage... it auto hard reset...fully loaded with softwares.
Didn't have time to install any software and it hard reset two days later at abt the same time. Funny why this happen when the set has only factory default softwares.
Did some checking at PDA stores and there are many possibilities to this.
One of them is not properly following the 8hr charging time when it is new and also overnight charging. To solve it is to charge it until its full and disconnect the charger. Do this for a week and see what happens.
So far, my set never once auto hard reset again after i follow this routine.
Hope this helps....
thanx for an advice.
dead......
I just installed EasyTweak on a i-Mate v.1.72 and it went completely dead.
had to take the bat out for some minutes for it to recognise the hard-reset......
i'm gonna cry......
I am getting a similar problem with my 1 week old XDAII. It is all absolutely fine, and then suddenly it won't switch on or soft reset so I have to hard reset and restore a previous backup.
I thought it iwas battery related, but after hard reset, the battery is still got enough charge.
Any help greatly appreciated.
This is crazy!! exacly the same folks, my 1 week old XDA2 have been hard reset like 20 times!!! everything works fine and suddently I can´t turn it on and the soft reset doesn´t work. So hard reset and start all over again untill the next hard reset that can overcome within hours or 1 day time.
What I´m I gonna do.... it´s the second unit I´m testing.... and the same in both
Bill (from Spain)
Me too
Every week, keeps hard reset, I tried everything, every ROM, and nothing. At this time my phone is Hong Kong (yes I send it!) going to a Service center to see what they can do. I saw a xda2 from a friend and his got a New ROM that isn't avaliable ate www.myxda.com .... Any sugestions? and I yeard about Windows Mobile third edition
Can't stop the hard reset?
BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP!
I'm using Sprite Backup...its so much faster than the stock ones and best thing is it saves as an exe file. All you need to do is backup to the SD card and you're safe.
I have same experience:
I was doing fine when I went overseas over the weekend. As I was travelling, I powered off. And after an hour or so, I was unable to power on. It has nothing to do with the battery. No button or soft reset can bring up the screen. Only hard reset.
Note that I don't have such a problem when I power off at night. And both my batteries were charged >8hrs at new and I stop charging my battery when it reaches 100%. Not to mention I changed the battery as I thought it was due to no power. So, not a battery problem.
I don't think it is the software problem either, as after hard reset, I still get that problem when I powered off for an hour.
I did notice something on my 2nd encounter: the Phone app was up because I received a call. After I powered off, it stuck. At night, I closed all my apps and power off at the Today. I wonder if that is the cause.
Suggestion for those that have the same problem:
either
1) don't power off with your Phone apps running - close it totally
or
2) run Windows Media and turn off your screen or run some Display Off utility instead of power off
HTH
Hi all:
Yes, I uninstalled the spb utility and now the xda seems to work better plus the battery last twice as much as before with the spb utilities!!!
On the other hand I installed the sprite backup and it´s much faster than the build in app.
I hope it doesn´t hard reset anymore, but still testing it, only 24 hours without hard reset, I´ll confirm it after 3 or 4 days of smooth work...
See u
Bill
does any one know how we solve this damn bug !!
my 2 weeks old Qtek 2020 that i bought from london. crashes down and without reason performs hard reset every couple of days, i have backups but it is very frustrating, and all the time i have a feeling that the system is not stable.
my device info are :
rom version 1.66.00 wwe
rom date 02/20/04
radio version 1.10.00
protocol version 1337.18
extrom version 1.66.130
do i need to update the rom to solve the problem and if so what is the link to it
or are there any other suggstions how to solve the problem
Back to top
It might be for the following reasons:
1) some software you installed hard reset it or caused it to hard reset
2) the battery is not working properly or you left it to dry up
3) faulty hardware
Cheers
if it were faulty hardware then it's odd that a hardreset always works
Hmmm, sounding all to familiar. My XDA2, 1.66.00 WWE, had it a month, been back to o2 once and is on the way back now. I was having loads of problems with the thing freezing, mainly when taking it out of my pocket, turning on and not being able to do anything. I even ran it for a month with no extra software at all and it kept happening. Lets hope the service center can pin the problem down soon as ive currently had hardly any use out of the thing.
could it have something to do with the 2003 issue with not baing able to run more then 13 or how much was it processes
maybe some process get killed which is needed to turn on somehow
it would explain why people seem to get it more often if they have fancy today and skinning items which also have their own processes
I am beginning to thing this 'bug' relates to the battery.
I have charged my XDAII overnight for a week and it seems to be Ok since then !
to those who have unintentional hard resets on their XDA2, did you all upgraded your rom by yourselves? my XDA2 is just 3 days and i want to be extra careful with mine as i just installed tons of softwares today.
it's been awhile since my hardreset itself last
and my xda2 still have the 1.66 rom that it came with

Anyone! Freezes, weird image and hangs...

Hi Everyone,
I'm having some issues with my P3600.
Sometimes (to many times in the past days) while making something on it, the image on the screen suddenly mess up (freezes and weird image) and hangs. Then after the soft reset, somethimes the image stays black, and finally on the 5\6 try it boots fine...
Also noticed that this occurs more while connecting the usb cable jack to sync...
Already make some hardresets and some rom upgrade tests... Also tryed some wm61 cooked rooms, no luck.
Anyone already got this? I think there's must be some problem on the flat cable that connects the lcd-board. Can anyone help me whit some more ideas... before I decide to open it?
Thanks In advantage
SteelwarrioR
it happens the same to me... the pixels all messed up... i dont know wath is the problembut i think its the flat cable ... becouse i have open it one time 3months ago and now its fine. now yesterday have done the same thing
sorry my english
Ok, I open it last night based on the service manual I found somewhere on the Internet, the flat cable looks fine... Now this morning this same situation occurred again, this time while unplugging the usb charger. I Think there's must be some problem on the usb connector. The usb connector is part of the main board so it could be a hardware board issue? Anyone got this on problem on Trinity? Any troubleshooting tips ideas will be appreciated...

hi,
same here. trinity hangs up after some time, screen stays black, when i try to wake it up.
have to hard reset several times and it wont boot for some trys, then with luck the windows sometimes finaly starts. I already changed the simcard and removed the sd-storagecard.
The vodafone hotline adwised me to send it in. Seems to me like a hardware issue.
My trin is about 1 year old.
(sry for my bad english)

hi,
same here. trinity hangs abouth 3 or 4 time a day, screen stays black, when i try to wake it up.

hi, the same to me... it's like the rom's, after a few soft reset couldn't find the necessary files to start again.... and sometimes, after meny tries, it starts well... it's like the ppc processor gets tired and goes to stand by..... it starts freezing the display, and loosing some pixels. so the only things to do is soft resetting the device... any solution? thanks
same with my htc - it appears to me that the errors occur when the trinity was used for a while and the processor was getting warm. the files and folders on the sd-card show strange symbols. but i have also problems when i stick out the sd-card completely.
i will send it to htc repair center - i just hope that they will not send it back as the errors occur only frequently.
so long,
bjoern
solution solved
take taste power and center ok reset take few sec to powering and phone starting
or power and run and stop call reset and phone starting on factory powering
not solved at all
sorry no - this is not the point - i think all guys here have (hard- and soft-) reset their Trinity more than 50x!
the problem is that once the software has crashed you can`t reset it for about 20min - it seems that the processor has to cool down or something like that - after a while (if I´m lucky) my P3600 boots as normal.
I already flashed several new roms - same problem with all of them - I`m pretty sure it`s a hardware failure.
Hello, i don't have any such problem, my Trinity runs very stable even with cooked roms. but sometimes Mobile navigator 7 takes too much memory so the System becomes instable and i have to softreset it.
Hi, mine bug also, and that's begin 2 or 3 days after I have flash to the 1.56.70.11 Radio Rom....
mine worked fine for about 1 1/2 years but suddenly it crashed continous. i havent flashed it and allready hard reseted several times on different days. sometimes it worked for a while but hangs if i started a bigger app like tomtom. vodafone told me they will exchange my p3600. now im waiting for their call
E: Got a new one today which works perfectly so far!
Hi guys,
has anyone had this issue solved without swapping the device?
I have the same problem.....
Bye
Petz
Same problem here...
I have to sftreset or hard reset several times to get it runing again...
In my opinion its some kind of problem with the processor...
Stiil i'm hoping this is a software insue... so that sone one have a hotfix for that...
For my part, when my Trinity crash, I remove the mini-SD, the SIM card and the battery. I just re put the battery, restart (soft reset until WM has realy start, and no more touch or screen freezes), I replace the sim, restart again.. and finaly I replace the mini-sd. It's very long, but generally works well
EDIT:
Finally, I better make my tongue and keep my method for me because at evening begin, my trinity crashed and impossible to turn it on until I finally come back house and have no need more...
my hand that it will crash tomorow morning juste after leave to works
hi, i started getting the same problem.
only thing different is I upgraded to wm6.1 (Mary SL)
I took it back to wm6 which was still locking, then down to wm5.
1week later no issue!
maybe the wm6+ os's needs more cpu than wm5 and causes it to overheat!
just a thought!

I don't think so because I downgraded my Trinity to original WM5 and, even if there were less crashes, it crashed anyway.
Now it's still with WM5 but it doesn't start anymore, only backlight.
Ciao

I want to let you known that my Trinity has run ok for 5 hours without any issue after putting some paper between battery and metallic plate under the battery.
I had to press a little over the rear cover to have it placed correctly because the battery is higher than before.
Keep in mind that it stopped running completely 3 monthes ago, it didn't start anymore and it didn't even go into bootloader mode.
Now I'm using WinMobile 6.5 beta........
Ciao!

Helppppp HD2 Well not boot up anymore

Hey,
I had my HD 2 for 2 days now.
It just crash on me for the first time soft rest the unit now it well not boot up anymore stuck in the HTC with white background screen and the rom version at the left bottom side.
Tried removing battery nothing still stuck.
I tried to hard rest the pda but cannot get it to hard rest.
Can someone explain how to hard rest what do you have to do hold the volume key up or down and switch the unit on tried it but nothing.
Please any help.
Thanks
Gigino
Have a look here (point 15) on howto do the reset(s)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583638
Good luck..
Same as Gigino, my HD2 is only giving me white HTC screen. I haven't even had it long enough to connect it to my pc. No messing around. It locked up about 5 times in the 5 days I have had it. Each lock up was only resolved with the battery removal. Curiously no lockups until I set an alarm.
The difference between my issue and Gigino is that I do not have the rom version showing up at reboot, just the white screen. Hardware issue, or software?
Followed the Hard Reset procedure as outlined by HTC and your link above. The reset commands are recognized, but after reload, back to white HTC screen.
Bricked?
If you cant get functionality back by taking the battery out or by soft or hard resetting then theres not much more you can do. You could try taking the battery out and giving it a full charge with the mains charger provided but I dont think that will do much good.
As long as you havent flashed a new rom with the goldcard then call your service provider. If you got a sim free phone then call the place where you bought it as its covered by warantee. You should be able to get it replaced if theres a fault.
the same thing happened to me after 2 weeks with phone, I'd had no problems with the phone then one morning while using opera it froze. I had to remove the battery to try and reboot the phone but it wouldn't boot past the htc screen. eventually after removing the battery several times the phone wouldn't even turn on, also the phone got very hot with the battery in. I called htc and told them and they picked up it for repair. it looks like they couldn't fix it cos they sent me a replacement phone. they returned the phone to me within a week.
HTC White Screen of Death
Thanks, guess I feel a bit better knowing it wasn't anything I did..and that I am not alone in this world of WSOD
I have contacted the seller and haven't heard back yet. I don't imagine it will be a problem. Perhaps above and beyond the alarm clock/freezing thread a WSOD thread is in order until it is determined if they are related.
Thanks all.
GR8
Update;
I pulled battery and replaced so device is off. Charged over night and the orange power charging light didn't go off or go green by morning. device was hot.
Get this though, when I pull the phone off the charger the orange light doesn't go out!. Now the phone won't turn on either. Had to pull battery again to make orange light go out and when it powered back up, back to HTC whit screen.

I don't know what is the cause.
But it is really pissing me off.
The only solution out is to do a "hard" reset by holding volume up and down TOGETHER while doing that .... press the power on button for about 1 second ... then ONLY let go the "power on" button which still hold volume up and down.
You should see the screen to restore to factory default .... and proceed to do so.
I have encounter quite a number of times but after trying various "solution" ... it still happens.
By the way, I am using cooked ROM (which I don't think is the problem).

I encounter similar situation .... was installing the new taskbar .... then it took very long ..... so while the installation in progress thingy is still in the middle .... I did a soft reset ... then it start up till the white screen and stock there and showing the ROM version etc at the bottom left.
So have to do a Restore to Factory Default to get it up and running again.
Seems there is something really wrong with this model.
I have it for two months now and lots of issues.
Now it is with HTC for repair as I also have the white screen with green HTC issue.
Nothing helped Hard Reset nor flashing rom.
I can't wait to get it back ;-)
Tons of issues with this phone, but my love for it is just a bit bigger than the hate.
hello all gettin frustrated here too bout a week ago my brick started and stopped on std rom reflashed duttys 1.3 and new radio.was fine for a few days then it seemed to crash and hard reset by itself.now i have a crash every day which inccurs a hard reset very annoying........gets stuck at boot screen as does every ones.now if you if your like me and have HSPL,cooked rom and upgraded radio.....sorry htc....and are sending it back for repair, you should still be able to activate bootloader mode and reflash std rom/radio.if its like mine after flashin it might behave as normal again untill next crash.so.........
1. Turn your phone off
2. Press and hold the VOLUME DOWN then Press and hold the POWER button. After about 3 seconds the tri-coloured screen should appear
3.connect it to your pc it should install drivers.the screen should now say "USB"
4.reflash with std rom/radio (should be located here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=577717 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611787 and bingo HTC are none the wiser and it may restart again if it does dont trust it!!!!!!!!
i think i read somwhere that a shipped rom will remove HSPL but you might want to clarify that with a senior member here.

If you flash a shipped rom via activesync as you described then the HardSPL will be left intact and HTC will be the wiser and will invalidate your warranty.
The only way to remove the HardSPL is to flash a shipped rom via microSD Card which will flash the shipped rom, radio and spl back and will leave you with a stock device.
White screen with HTC logo is a hardware defect
I also have the issue with not booting HD2 after less than a month of use . It shows white screen and green HTC logo but without the red digits in the bottom part of the screen. And one more strange behavior to mention - when phone is switched off and I connect it to the charger it starts itself after 30sec approximately.
What is inside:
Original SPL with an original ROM but for different region than the one which originally was inside. I flashed it by SSPL (without using HSPL).Only ROM was flashed without radio as radio was the same.
What checks were done:
1)Soft reset
2)Removing of battery
3)Hard reset several times
4)Flashing back with the original ROM through ActiveSinc and cable from computer. As the original SPL is intact this should return it to the factory condition. After flashing I did 2 hard resets. But no change - still showing white screen on boot up.
Finally I gave it to the repair workshop. They confirmed that this is a hardware problem and sent it for repair in authorized HTC service.
Suggest that this is a problem with a bad soldered chip (integrated circuit) during manufacturing of the PCB. In this case the power controller chip is suspected. The contact pad of the chip and solder are touching each other and phone works. With the time passing the contact surface oxidate and contact is lost. So initially the phone will work but reset itself occasionally while the contact is instable and will stop fully to operate when the contact is completely lost. Only replacement of defective PCB can rectify this problem. Trials to re-solder the chip are usually not successful. This is purely manufacturing defect. However sometimes it may happen if you drop down your phone.
i had same problem, it was stuck on first white screen with some version numbers in red in bottom left.
I did a hard reset and it got fixed.
i had not installed anything or flashed anything. it just got stuch at that screen 1 fine day for no reason

I have the same problem my htc hd2 freezes at the white screen.
I have tried to do a hard reset but i have not the time to put the usb cable in at the red green white screen.
Is it possible to resolve this problem or must I send my phone to HTC.
Thanks.

WSOD FIX
To all the people having WSOD issues, check your microSD cards. I had this issue while ago with the white HTC screen and NO RED TEXT and I norrowed the problem down to my microSD card. When taking it out of the HD2, it would boot up fine. So I plugged my card into a USB adapter on my PC, formatted it and then put it back into the HTC. Everything worked fine.
EDIT: My HD2 is a T8585 and is unbranded bought from UK. I have always been using the stock 1.66 WWE ROM
I have exactly the same prob as camo.b, and right now I`m formatting my SD card, hoping that I'll be able to at least restore the SPL so that the warranty will still be available. I'm bringing it in tomorrow, if everything turns out to be fine with my SPL...

My HD2 will not let me flash anything, even though I can get into the bootloader screen. Right now it's semi-bricked, and I have tried flashing a stock ROM via both usb and sd card, I have tried using task29, I have even tried uninstalling HSPL, but nothing works. Everything fails, either at the beginning, at the middle or at the end of the operation.
I flashed it with a shipped rom and he works,
I was unable to do a hard reset with any card still in the device. be sure both sim and sd card are removed, then reinstall battery and follow vol up/down etc. procedures. good luck.
