Hi all.
First of all, this site's brilliant! The advice on here really helped me when I was trying to install TomTom on my XDA Mini S.
My wife is from South Africa and we're heading out there for a hol in Jan. Her brother says he's got a car for me so I would really like to have a sat nav unit I can use over there as I've come to depend on TomTom to get me around unfamiliar places.
Problem is, TomTom don't seem to do a South African map package. Does anyone know of a decent program I can use instead? I aleady have a BT GPS receiver and plan to load it on my phone, so ideally I'd want just a software package if there's one available.
Thanks in advance.

Map4PDA might work. http://map4pda.com/download.1.4.htm
you can pick from google maps, yahoo maps, virtual earth, and ask.com maps.
Pretty easy to use.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I think Handymap will be perfect for what I want.
Cheers.

Hey guys,
I want to buy some gps software for my dopod 838pro and a bluetooth gps receiver. I was wondering what ones work best with your hermes devices and what problems arise when using them.
I was looking at the papago software and it seems pretty good. If there is anyone here using it I would like to know your feedback on how it performs and also what kind of gps reciever you are using.
Thanks for your time and input
oh I am also in Australia..I don't know if that makes much difference or not
Cheers
I suggest IBlue 737 with the latest MTK chipset, it has nice auto on/off feature an 25 hours of battery life. another more expensive option is the Garmin Gps10X (the new Sirf3 model only, the old one is crap)
Software that i use:
Garmin Que + Franson GPSGate
OZI Explorer
IGO
TomTom
sorry to threadjack.
but regarding the IBlue 737, will it or does it need anything else other then my 8525 to work?
I have google maps on the 8525. will it work with that alone or do I have to add something else?
Once again sorry to threadjack but I think it fits into the OP's questions.
if needed delete this and I'll make a new thread.
google map is good with any GPS. (just nmake sure you have unlimited data) else it could be expensive.
ive used iGuidance 4 and iGO my way plus 2006 with BT-Q818
GUI:
iGO rocks.. smooth.. and really nice...
iGuidance .. just plain and dull.. gps tracking not smooth as iGO is.
what i really like about iGuidance though is the TTS feature, and it tells you which side the destination is.. iGO does not..
if the features i liked in iGuidance would just be integrated in iGO, ill get it in a heartbeat.
Fantastic!
and yes I have the unlimited data plan, had it for a long time. I used to have a smt 5600 before the 8525.
one more question... will it also work with the yahoo go 2.0?
thanks guys, one more thing to spend money on
yes, it will work with yahoo go 2.0. i use one myself(live in UK). make sure u have a data package though.(unlimited would be the best). i use t-mobile wnw £7.50 and a BT gps.its amazing what you can do with this phone.i love it
The thread jacking is ok its all relevant
So any other suggestions with people who have the papago software at all?
And does anyone have any other gps receivers?
Cheers
My favorite GPS sw is TomTom, great features, easy to use and no bugs. I use it with a earthmate bt-20. Takes up 1gb of space but worth it. Tomtom automatically connects to my BT receiver, responds quickly and has nice smooth 3d graphics.
My next favorite is MSN streets. It is easy to use and has the most up to date maps of my area.
I really dont care for Google maps unless I'm in a G network. If you dont have internet reception which is often the case when you travel then Google maps is completely useless.
The Earthmate BT-20 receiver seems to work ok but it is the only one I have tried. Its a ugly yellow, blue, and black 2"x3.5" plastic box. I look forward to the day when GPS is built in.
im in aussie town too, tomtom 6 (soon 7) on the hermes with some bluetooth gps that i got off ebay works wonders.
also has no issues running on prophet (my wifes phone) and my now retired magician.
microsoft streets was good when running in offline mode however it looks like they dont support australia anymore with the only map set available being a few years old.
Thanks guys for the advice
Seems like tomtom might be the go..its what I've been hearing as being the best out there.
I think I will just get a gps receiver off ebay too
Cheers
I might as well throw in my .02 as well hehe
I'm in Australia and using Tomtom 6 with a Globalsat BT receiver and it works perfectly
Good luck with your decision

i have the garmin GPS 10x and i get a weird error - ive only had it a week, long story short sometimes it wont turn on. --- how do you tell which model you have?
when it works, its awesome. tells you which turns to make, has a "recalculate" feature, good maps with a lot of detail
how do you connect it to google maps? i did it one time but haven't been able to do it since! would like to run it simulatneous with garmin XT the software that comes with it, google in satellite mode so you see from the sky where you travel to and hear from the garmin software which way to turn, would be pretty neat
i get confused which settings need to be put to which com port? i tried to add it in blue tooth and set up COM port 0 in there, and then go intot he GPS external setting (WM6) and set up both hardware and program port to 0 as well. cant get it to work alongside garmin XT software
Microsoft was offering a BT Pharos GPS for about $70 for PocketPC devices awhile back, not sure if they still are.
I got one and it works very well. The only difference between this and the typical Pharos offering is that it doesn't come with any software. Using it with Livesearch works perfectly -- the only thing Livesearch is lacking is vocal turn-by-turn directions and automatic trip recalculation. But of course you're not limited to just using livesearch with the GPS anyway.
Looks like it is still available:
http://www.amazon.com/Pharos-Blueto...6?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1187064734&sr=8-3
Nokia Smart2GO.. It's tomtom but for free worldwide. (with some very minor limits/payable extras)
Have a search for the word nokia and posts by me and youll find some info about it in one of the hundreds of other gps threads around the hermes
thank you for your info. I am thinking of getting a bt gps receiver with software
my favourite is Navigon (you can tinker soo nicely with all the settings 'under the hood' ).
Dunno whether Navigon has a AU map at all, but they sell under a different name in the USA.
I would recommend any sirfIII GPS antenna with a good review in one of the navigation fora. I am using a cheap Mainnav that is OK.(great reception even behind metal coated car windows)
Wait for a Natural Disaster!!
I use TomTom 6 with a Nokia Bluetooth GPS reciever.. i got it for 29.99 from Fry's!!!
I live in central texas and when Katrina was on its way to New Orleans fries had CRAZY discounts on GPS units, Maglites, Waterproof cases for pdas.. basicly almost anything that can be used for "survival" so i grabbed a bunch of other stuff... now that Hurricane Dean is on its way i'm pretty sure they'll have discounts again... Time to hit up Fry's!!
lol its "natural disaster" sales at frys...for every hurricane that comes along we drop the prices by 20%
Cheers
WM5, iGuidance 3.x, i.Trek M5+

If you have a question, just ask! I can't make sense out of your posting so far. Something to do with GPS....?
Nice writing stile, make it rime and you will be a star!
But seriously, the icon is there to help you manage a GPS receiver if you have one which obviously you do not.
So go out and buy a BT GPS receiver and a navigation software like TOMTOM and you will be all set.
Don't worry they all come with instruction manuals.
1st setup a bluetooth partnership with device under: bluetooth-settings-com ports-new outgoing port(com6).
2nd setup com port under start-setting-connections-external gps-gps program port(choose 7)-hardware-gps hardware port-com6-baud band as per device instructions, mine said 38400.
under access-make sure box is cheked.
This should be it. I use google maps for free with free internet access to open maps as you are driving. I use a bluetooth holux gps slim240 which I bought on ebay for $55.
Good luck.
with which device do i setup a blue tooth partner ship ..!!
rest all is done ..!!
what is gps reciever and navigation software..!!
i don t know this..!!
plz guide me..!!
I don't mean to be rude, but if you do not know these things and didn't think of googling for them you have no business messing around with anything saying 'GPS' on your device!
After all these are the basics:
GPS receiver is the thing (antenna and chip) that picks up the signal from the satellites and calculates your current position. It also connects to your phone via bluetooth to report this information.
Navigation software is the program you run that displays the map and guides you where to go.
And remember - if you do not know what it is you do not need it!
mr. levenum..!!
i need to know all this..
i will get it in a day.!
u plz tell me this how much a gps reciever costs and where can i find its software for free..!!
which gps reciever is the best.
is there any gps reciever which funcations as the bluetooth head device also..!!
waitin ur replies.. !!
and its does not matter..
u were rude..
its ok..!!

Don't bother, you're not ready for it yet.....
First learn about the issue then come back and ask how to use it.
am all set.. plz tell me about what i asked.. !!
in my previous message.
(yeah, I know. Why bother, eh?)
http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/sea...ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&fsop=1&fsoo=1
as for the navigation software, well you should really buy it. You can illegaly download it from, y'know, those places where you get all your cracked games from, but, like...we should all support software developers or it might not be worth their while to make any new versions....
waitin ur replies guys..!!
plz answer my question.!!
waitin.!!
1) I can't tell you how much a receiver will cost or where to by because I do not know where you live and chances are you are not in the same country as me so I wouldn't have the info for you any way.
2) There are no major differences between latest models. If you want to know a certain receiver better find and read a review.
3) NO!!! BT headset and GPS receiver are completely different things. Though now that you mention it - here is an idea for new product. Consider a startup company
4) yamilrx already gave you an answer for free software and a suggestion + price for receiver in US. If you want help in the future you should read carefully the answers you get!

As I noted initially a bluetooth GPS receiver is about $50-100 on ebay. I like my holux gps 240 slim because it is the size of a lipstick. I use google maps for free but there is no voice guidance unless you purchase software such as tom tom.
Follow my instructions to paire the bt receiver to your pocket pc and it should work. Remember the com port part it won't work if you don't do that part.
No! you cannot have a bt gps and bt head device but you can purchase separate and link both to your phone. I currently have my gps receiver, a bt headset, and my car's bluetooth phone linked to my qteq. As soon as I sit in the car with my phone it knows that it is my hands free and links everytime. I have a BMW 530i with built in BT phone which links to my phone contacts.
Here is my previous post:

nah, it's a problem with waypoint.
just use other navigation software like garmin or mapking, you will get the fix as fast as your n82, if not faster.
where can i buy it.. it is official softeware for x1?
am going malaysia / thailand soon.. so i need a reliable one... instead of "'wayloser"
thanks
No issues on my X1 using Google Maps and Garmin, fastest fix I've ever seen infact (under 15 seconds).
google maps sucks on mine too.. i enabled gps but it always give me the within 600m or 1000m etc etc ****..
i want exact or almost exact like the nokiamaps..
cansomeone recommend me a good software/map.. and having good maps of the world.........
tomtom7 rocks
got all kinds of funny voices like yoda and arnold too
Yea I'm a fan of TomTom7 on my X1i too. Works great, has add-on voices like Rudegar said, and it establishes a fix quite quickly (much quicker than my BT GPS + HTC Universal)!
sounds go.. i went tom tom site,
1) it doest seem to work with x1 out of the box? there was no option for x1..
there is only tt6.. no tt7 btw..
2) does it have south east asia detail maps?
thanks bro and where is the best place to get it cheaper online..
My GPS was wacked until I used QuickGPS.
Start -> Programs -> QuickGPS
i got tomtom 7, works great.

If you're going to Thailand, definitely get Garmin Mobile XT with Thailand Street Map 8.0.
As they are the best detailed map available here. You can try GPS section at pda4x for said apps. And make sure you got the right map (ie. English Version).
I actually had an N95, and I can tell you this much. THAT gps was a joke, even assisted by the network it was painfully slow. With the xperia however I get a fix within half a minute, usually less.
try live maps that works a treat.
http://livesearchmobile.com/windows_mobile.htm
gps in xperia is best I've seen in a handset
MapKing 2007 on the X1 works great, will normally get a fix in the first couple of seconds. My settings are:
Com4
Baudrate: 57600
Anyone advertising tomtom7 should remember the only way you've got it is illegal
in my opinon i have n95 8gb as well locking on the gps is a joke, damn bloodly long however with tom tom 7 on x1 locks within a min!
ok lol so we all have jokes
so now now, what is the easiest legalest way to get a GPS software / map
1) cheapest legal source
2) supports X1
3) performs good.. have GOOD worldwide map.. unlike wayloser
any kind soul plsssss

Garmin Mobile XT has decent map coverage for SEA, and there's also free (and legitimate) map for Malaysia and Singapore that's more detailed than the commercially available map. The only thing you need to be aware is you need to purchase the sd card from Garmin, that comes with the software preinstalled. You can't just buy the software and install it in your own sd card or pda, as the license is tied to the sd card.
Of course this is the legitmate source you are asking ....
oh.. thanks for reply.. does this mean i can use my usual sd card while gpsing?
oh no ...
I'm using Copilot Live 7 on my X1, brilliant.
Ok, I am still waiting for HTC desire to come to my door. At the moment I am just wondering what GPS application available for Android (I mean like Garmin or Tomtom thing??) As I understand both Garmin and Tomtom are still unavailable. I know the phone should come with Google map? As I understand it google map require internet connection not just GPS? the thing is I dont have internet connection with my phone plan. I only use wifi or hotspot. So I need GPS application that can work just by using the built-in GPS? Besides the internet package here downunder in Aussie is pretty limited...too low capacity. I wish they have unlimited connection.
best ones are Copilot and Navigon

Navigon is available in the market, as is CoPilot and a few others. I prefer CoPilot of those two but am really waiting for Sygic's Aura, which looks awesome.
In China, KLD(凯立德) and Gaode(高德) have published NAV software based on android OS, and it run smoothly.
Aura is very nice indeed, but it wont be available soon.
I asked this to Sygic and they said that iPhone version will be available FIRST.
Then Android ...
Now you can wait for a year or two

Navigon
The trial version works great.
Once activated with a bought key it stops working.
Wierd.
I have CoPilot and Sygic on my Desire and both work fine.
I was not so impressed with Navigon.
I have iGO on my diamond and it beats all three of them qua quality, but must say Aura looks good.
i've just finished to install Igo Amigo for my Desire, and is working so good . For Europe (for me, I've been in many countries) is the best...for America, i think another one like tomtom you should choose.
If anyone is planning on using the hacked-to-work-outside-US Google navigation ("Maps brut"), I wouldn't bother. I've used it and decided it was no replacement for a proper paid GPS application. Turn by turn voice cues are erratic and often late or not-present, and for some reason the next road to be taken is always "unknown". I missed turns twice because of the lack of cues.
I used Google navigation for a 2 1/2 hour journey, in that time the phone went from 2/3 battery to severe battery warnings and red indicator. This was with an old, non-official car charger plugged in! I strongly suspect that the frequency of the screen update and the use of 3G are probably culprits, not to mention the frequent re-routing as I missed turns.
My old WinMo phone used to run CoPilot 7 and would do substantially better with no in-car charging.
What is the battery life like with the £20 CoPilot? Is a proper in-car charger a must for journeys > 3h?
I had some issues on copilot 7 WM with mapping. The maps were quite old and sometimes the routing was very odd. On test routes where I knew where I was going it would sometimes take me off in what I knew to be a longer way round by far. I'm sure there will be much newer maps on version 8.
The Navigon I find is very good but only annoying thing I find is landscape view. Between the bars on the software and the taskbar on the handset, the map only uses about half the available screen which is disappointing.
If anyone knows if it is possible to view more fullscreen please correct me.
Can anyone recommend Android nav software for cycling?
CoPilot appears to have a cycling option, Navigon not.

I'm not a cyclist, but shouldn't ANY of them do as long as you stick to the roads? I don't know of any that have off-road capability...
Yeah, I COULD follow the roads they suggest, but I don't fancy cycling on motorways/highways.
Don't want off-road, just want small quieter roads...

I'm pretty sure you can tell CoPilot to ignore certain roads...
Co-pilot has a walking and a cycling mode. Haven't tried them out yet though.
Tom Tom release?
TomTom 6 om my Diamond was phenomenal, and was by far the most customisable for me. (downloading voices, maps, POI, speed cams etc). I know that TomTom are releasing a ver for Android soon, but does anyone know what the current developments are? Just waiting on my DESIRE now, and am ready to go!! If not anytime soon, I might have to settle with CoPilot, as it has Australia Maps, and South Africa maps (worldcup). How good is CoPilot is though Australia? Anyone know? And do I need an Internet connection to run it?
the best I tried so far and worked brilliantly even in Cyprus is sygic 10 mobile maps!
Navigon gets my vote.
Clear maps, works smooth.
I really like Navigon, look cool...except dont think there is NO map for Australia? Can anyone suggest anything that has Australian map?? I also want something that does not need internet connection?? (Google map is free but need internet) just plain GPS.
