can anybody advise if there's a browser that supports java frames - preferably with some kind of smart fit - I'm having no end of trouble accessing my banking info on my xda (using internet explorer)...thanks
Net Front seems to do a good job. Although it doesn't support all Java commands it does do many more then the iexplorer that comes with PPC 2003.
look here.

OK Chaps..(and any Chapesses..of course. )
Whilst accsessing the web, I noticed that any JAVA appletts I came across didnt work........
I gather this is somthing to do with downloading some .jab, .jar files, / midlet suite into the Midlet manager.........
Where do I find such beasts........
(Looked at Midlet.com. but didn't see the XDA listed...or am I just being stupid?)
Many thanks
Steve.
A lot of confusion goes on with Java. The XDAII does not support full Java, i.e. embedded Java applets in web pages, or Java applications.
It does support a flavour of ECMAScript, called JScript, for scripting simple things on web pages - this is often confused with Java because Netscape called the original scripting language JavaScript. Apart from a similarity in syntax, it has very little to do with "real" Java.
However with the latest ROM update from O2, you get Midlet Manager which can run standalone applications using a particular cut-down version of "real" Java called J2ME (java 2 micro edition; with MIDP - mobile information device profiles) . These are generally called midlets, and are normally packaged as jar or jad files.
There are two problems here -
Hardware: these applications are usually written for mobile phones with a keypad, which the XDA lacks and midlet manager doesn't simulate, so many of the midlets are just not usuable; mobile phones have teeny weeny screens, and of course the XDA has a nice big one, so midlets generally will look awful.
Software: Because mobile phones are pretty low spec compared to our glorious XDAs, midlets are generally pathetic comared with real pocketPC applications.
If you want to try some midlets, just to see how pointless they are, there are a lot of free ones at www.midlet.org
If you want to run full Java on the XDA, you can purchase a proper JVM. I beleive Jeode runs OK, but it is $50.
There's also Waba, which is a free, similarly cut-down java variant, that is a good alternative to J2ME; and IBM Websphere Micro Edition, that is a cheap alternative full J2ME.
I've heard that the NetFront alternative browser has a companion JVM for applets, so this might be your best bet if you want to run Java Applets in web pages.
Cheers.!!!
Midlet Manager
cant be downloaded from anywhere can it
is it comercial and only in roms like the new o2 one ?
Yeah, it's one of those products that the vendor only licenses to OEMs. I suppose you could get somebody to send you the cab from the extended rom and see if it'll install.
As the subject says are there any alternate browsers available ?
Ive checked Mozilla web site and they dont seem to cater for mobile devices. Opera has a version available for smartphones but not PPC
So has anyone any alternatives to suggest ? I loathe IE, its dead and buried on all my PC's and would love to replace it on my phone.
Unless of course some enterprising soul has found a way of porting Linux on to the phone
RE
Of course, search the net and you can find either Netfront or the upcoming Opera.
But why deplete your precious memory when IE is available? The installation of an alternate browser is good unless you are able to totally remove IE so as to recover the memory.
I'm happy using IE for my browsing.
Well, if you're looking for free browsers, you can try MiniMoCE which is short for Mini Mozilla CE.
Version 0.008 is out here...

Thanx for the tips, will have a play with these
Opera is available for PPC when you install it with the Midi Applet on your PPC, check this thread for info on installing: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=27138&start=50
Thunderhawk might be the best but also most expensive browser for PPCs. It has periodic costs for its use and supports full scaling of internet pages through a proxy.

Yup,
Check the Macromedia site for the Flash plugin. Is also available on this site. Good luck.
what about a java plugin for the PIE so i can use hushmail.?
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Uploads/Java/JeodeForPocketPC.exe
It's a Java JVM for Pocket Internet Explorer.
sweet ill let people know if it works with hushmail
plugin fails to load.. i have no clue whats wrong with it.
Just installed it on my Qtek 9000... works fine with Buzztime (www.buzztime.com) in Internet Explorer Mobile.
RE
Hi BeyondtheTech,
I can access buzztime too
Whats there in buzztime that separates the difference between having java and no java installed?
Any other java-enabled sites that can be tested out which cannot be tested by no java installed?
Thanks
The Buzztime games are Java-enabled internet-multiplayer games. I don't know about other Java sites, though.
RE
Hi BeyondtheTech,
Few questions on Jeode for PPC
1) Does it supports WM5?
2) After installing, can internet banking sites be accessed from the PPC? I was informed that because Jeode for PPC does not have security features, hence, banking sites cannot be accessed ie. login in
3) If no, is there any way that internat banking sites can be accessed from the PPC?
Thanks
i can get in desertschools.org and bofa.com
i can access HSBC Banking from my PPC anyway - althought i dont think thats JAVA.
I do have problems playing games that are made with Visual Basic though - gonna look for a plugin/install now
p.s Using a O2 Exec WM5
Hi! Hope you could help me (again) :?
First I need to tell - I was searching the forum and net, but unfortunately I can't find what I'm exactly looking for.
(I'm asking about Wizard not Universal / Himalaya...)
What is in your opinion the best (easiest, fastest, most readable with 320x240 resolution, working full screen and in landscape mode, cheapest...) way to remotely connect to the desktop workstation?
[1] Connecting to the Linux box
1A. Command line / shell via ssh/ssh2 – there’s no need to use any special server software nor configuration, but there’s a question about the best client software. Right now I'm going to use http://www.pocketputty.net/. Did you try any of these with Wizard?
PocketPuTTY 0.1 for WM2003 (stable)
PocketPuTTY 0.2 for PPC2002 (highly experimental, unstable)
PocketPuTTY 2006-05-04 dev snapshot for WM2003 (latest, highly experimental)
How stable is the “dev snapshot” version and is there any other (free or almost free) ssh/ssh2 client for PocketPC?
I used to use PuTTY for Symbian S60 and it worked like a charm...
1B. Remote Desktop – what is the best client-server software to do it?
I used to use VNC for Linux PC – Linux PC connection, but I’m not sure if it’s good idea to use VNC with (so) small screen. Any tips and tricks or suggestions how to configure both ends?
[2] Connecting to WindowsXP PC
2A. Command line / shell via ssh/ssh2 – is it possible at all?
Will I need software acting as a server on the PC or there is this kind of software already in the system? Tips & Tricks & configuration examples are very welcome
2B. Remote Desktop – the best client & server software to do it?
Should I use VNC (server and client, like under Linux) or Remote Desktop server already incorporated in WinXP (what about the client in this case)?
And finally – where I can find a manual, help files or specification of the TSC pre installed on my device? Is this software useable?
Maybe I’m looking for something I already have…
Sorry for plenty of questions, but longer I'm searching - more questions I have.
I really appreciate yours opinions
All advices, links, PM's are very, very welcome
Thanks in advance

To use the pre installed terminal server you need to turn on remote desktop (winxp pro) and input your ip address on the wizard in the terminal server application, as long as your firewall is configured to allow the connection you should be able to control your pc using the software you already have, alternatively you can use services like log me in etc.
good luck
post back if you hit trouble
Rob
I use logmein.com's basic, free service. simple, quick, encrypted and you dont have to remember ip's or anything.
try http://gomyplace.com/ if you need something simple just to browse files on the remote and execute commands in the command shell
you will need just a regular internet browser to access the remot host
free, open source (GPL), works in NATed, firewalled environments, dynamic IPs, etc.
runs on Linux/Win32/Mac requires Java on the host machine
client needs only internet browser
Linux
PocketPuTTy is the way to go for connecting to a linux machine remotely, I'm using the latest dev build on my PDA and haven't found any issues yet, although i have only been using it for about 2 days. It works fine on the screensize too as its only command line.
Windows
I wouldn't even bother with command line for windows, as its horribly underpowered and wont provide you with much usability. It is possible to run SSH on windows, but like I said, I would see no reason too.
I used to have a VNC client for my old Axim X50 which ran great, it supported screen scaling, so it would fit my entire 1600x1280 screen onto the PDA no problems, and zoomed in when I required. It was only really usable to perform very simple tasks, but thats all I needed. Unfortunately I don't remember the clients name, however there are a number on the market that provide the same features.. maybe trying the following?
http://www.parystec.demon.co.uk/pt_vnc_WM5.htm
I use realVNC for my server. Oh and any VNC client should work with any VNC server, so if you installed VNC on linux, this should work fine.
Hope that helps
Does anyone have a solution for running Talkonaut and Opera Mini 4 at the same time? They're both java apps. Jbed doesn't support running multiple MIDlets so I tried TOA and both will start up but then they both crash while Talkonaut loads. Jbed runs a little faster anyway.
Also, does anyone know how to minimize Opera when running in Jbed? It runs fullscreen and I can't get access to the close button which allows me to minimize apps. In TOA it runs windowed so I can minimize it. Even if I could minimize Opera then I could run Talkonaut in TOA and Opera in Jbed.
The reason I'm using Talkonaut is because the MSN app that comes with WM6 seems to say all my contacts are offline when they aren't and it's the only client I've found that supports HTTP binding for GTalk (needed when using wifi at school since there's no cell signal).
Thanks for any help you can provide. Sorry if this is in the wrong section or has basic questions in it. I'm a noob to these phones.
And yes, I did Google, search the forums, and read the MIDlets Guide I saw on here somewhere...
