Hi All,
Thanks for all the good suggestions I've got from this site over the last couple of days. I have a new problem for you now...
I see from searching this site that loads of people have had problems using the XDA / XDA II as a wireless modem, but I can't piece together quite what I have to do to get it working with bluetooth.
I've got the pdf from the o2 site, but it's not very clear, and I think it's targeted to W2000 not XP, which is what I have.
SO..... Would somebody be kind enough to let us all know what the step-by step process is to get a laptop, for example, talking to the internet via the XDA II, via BLUETOOTH.
I have the latest o2 ROM, so I have those 2 new check boxes in Bluetooth settings. Most of the laptop setup is ok, but I think the major question is regarding the ports.....
Which port is the XDA talking on?
Which port is the laptop talking on?
How do I make them talk to each other?
And to add to this question - the o2 pdf presumably gives instructions such that we end up using the GPRS line. Can this be modified to use the cellular line to dial up a standard ISP so I can use up some of my free minutes (that's what I do when surfing on the XDA II)?
Sorry it's a bit waffly - PLEASE help! Thanks very much!
Phil

Oddly enough, a file called Using Xda II as a Modem.
Worked for me.
Oddly enough... that's the pdf I'm talking about.
It's not very clear about the COM ports - it says to select the "correct COM port for your connection", so the bit I'm asking about is how to decide upon or determine which is the correct com port for my connection. The important issue here is the bluetooth communication.
It's step-by-step modem and connection guide is also incorrect for XP (mine anyway - as I said, I suspect it's written for 2000, not 2000/XP), so there could be errors in my modem setup - I need to make sure that's not the case as well.
Any more ideas?
OK - let me put this another way - Before pressing connect on the WModem program on the XDA II, do you have to setup a bluetooth serial connection to the PC? If so, HOW? How do you simply make the connection?
Please help - somebody?
Thanks,
Phil
Just to make sure we are on the same document
http://www.myxda.com/html/HowToUse/XdaII/How to setup Wireless Modem for Bluetooth.htm
You first install your bluetooth adapter on your PC and this should install a bluetooth modem on your PC. You then configure that as described in the first section "Desktop setting:" make sure you change the word internet with your service providors APN in the advanced setting string.
Thats your PC side finished for now. no connections made yet.
Ok on to the XDA II, follow the instructions in the next section "Getting Start:" Steps 1 - 6 are all on your XDA II. Now it is waiting to be a modem. Move to your PC and follow the rest of the steps and you hsould get connected.
I used the O2 free WAP APN for my connections when i set it up. This meant having to set the proxy in IE just as you do on the XDA II if you want to browse. This gives limited function for anything other than browsing but for free thats fine for me.
I have not yet tested an ISP using this method but it will be a matter of removing the advanced string in the modem settings and using your ISP details and phone number in the dial pop up instead of *99#. I have done this before with my old nokia 7650.
Also remember if dialing into an ISP like that instead you will only get 9600 baud rate as opposed to the 42k odd that GPRS will give you. However this is fine for most light emails and IMs etc.
Oh and i did bond the 2 devices first. i nearly forgot that.
I Hope this helps you get sorted.
It works fine for GPRS. However when I try to connect to an ISP, I get a "line is busy" message. Any clues?
Dingo - you're great. That's got it.
The pdf that's on the user guide section of 'under the bonnet' section in the XDA site is
http://smsgen.o2-uktech.com/xda2/Xda_II_Modem_Setup_Guide.pdf
which is NAFF!
Your instructions are much better!
I'll try the ISP method soon - I'll let you know if it works.
Cheers!
Phil
OK - looks like I've got the ISP method working.
The process on the XDA is identical, but the modem settings are slightly different. The extra initialisation string can be done away with, and in the security tab of the connection (in network connections) "typical" must be selected rather than "advanced".
Other than that, it's all the sam, for me at least. I use UK2 as my ISP. It's very handy - no registration required.
Hope this helps.
Phil
ISP works for me too. I had to change in CSD line type the data rate to 9600 bps(v.32).
Being used to ADSL, 9600 bps brings back memories
Thanks to everyone who's contributed to this thread - it's helped me connect my laptop to the net thru my XDA2 over bluetooth for the first time!
I have a couple of questions that I hope someone might clear up for me:
1. I've used "mobile.o2.co.uk" in the init string and dialled with *99# which works but the XDA doesn't show any change to the connection icon. Is it using GPRS or data over voice or magic?!
2. Although web and mail downloads works great, I can't send email - I get it returned saying '550 relay not permitted'. A port issue I guess? Can that be solved?
Thanks for your time - keep up the good work.
Andy.

My project for this morning was to get my month-old XDA2 working as a wireless modem for my laptop with irDA. "How hard can it be?" I thought.
Well...
Needless to say, there are no instructions (yet) on the O2 UK website, so I've hunted around.
I've found these links:
http://bugjr.com/jon/gprs.html for general guidelines
A link from this page giving similar instructions
This hidden PDF from O2 UK for the XDA, also confirming similar instructions
Everything seems to be going OK. My laptop knows the XDA2 is there and can query the modem just fine. When I try to connect, though, the dial-up connection process starts, then ends a second later with a dialog saying:
"Error 692: There was a hardware failure in the modem (or other connecting device)"
I'm sure this isn't a hardware problem. Can anyone point me to the solution for this?
My connection is dialling number *99#
My modem init command string is AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","MOBILE.O2.CO.UK" (and I've tried AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","MOBILE.O2.CO.UK","",0,0 too)
User name is O2Web and password is password, as required in the O2 PDF link above.
TIA
Anyone?
Obviously my topic title isn't pushing anyone's buttons around here...
[Note to self: make sure next title mentions Paris Hilton  ]
It seems that I found the same info as you, but I can't get it working either.
I have had the same error as you, and also one that says the port is in use. In the end I gave up
I have since moved to the widcomm stack, as it was painfull to sync with the MS one and more than one PC.
The new stack has dialup networking in it, but though I can connect to it, it doesn't seem to go anywhere. I am also not sure about the wmodem app on the XDA. It seems to talk directly to RIL1. I don't know but it seems to use AT comands talking to RIL1... There should be some way to link this up with the BT stack?
So I can't get it working either way....
If anyone has any info, then that would be great.
I know this post is old but i had that problem and after searching a lot, finally i solved it by myself.
go to device manager, modems, on your modem or mobile modem right click and click properties. now go to "advanced" tab now that field of extra initialization commands must be clear, if not, clear it.
now you can connect without "error 692"
Ok. Please don't tell me to search. I have. If you have found the magic cure, then can you possible and nicely show me there this thread is?
PROBLEM:
No internet access for Laptop on 1.5 hour train trip.
However, TMOBILE XDA phone has good GPRS signal.
REQUIREMENT:
Share GPRS internet connection coming through XDA with laptop.

None found. Might test this one : http://216.239.41.104/search?q=cach...aptop-howto.pdf+gprs+laptop+ir&hl=en&ie=UTF-8

I understand boot mode (wallaby) where it can be used as traditional cellular modem. That's limited to speed problems, and I don't wish to pursue that.
I also found a link in Microsoft newsgroup (recaptured in google groups), but I need to track those individuals down:
http://groups.google.com/[email protected]&rnum=1
Thanks, hope we all can figure this out.
With wm2003 4.00.33 German there is the "Wireless Modem" application built in which works with my MDA. I don't know if that application also works with an english ROM. Maybe there is a ROM-Update out there and the wireless modem is included.
Fidl
Thanks. I just checked both PROGS and CONNECTIONS, no such thing.
New to my ENG 4.05.00 is GPRS AUTHENTICATION in the connections/networking seciton, but nothing else.

I know that the wireless modem is NOT included with your 4.00.05 ROM. It was included in the 3.17.03 ENG ROM from O2.
Maybe you give a try to the wmodem.exe i extracted from my german ROM.....
Good Luck!
Fidl
Great!!! I'll try tonight installing that and will let everyone know.
One question, however. From reading other threads (I finally found some), I noticed that the laptop should be running XP.
I guess the question really is, what are the step-by-step instructions to complete the configuration and get the laptop on the internet. I would think that they were:
(1) Getting the phone to have WMODEM [complete]
(2) Powering the phone up, and running WMODEM app [complete]
(3) Powering up the laptop, and then discovering a device [unknown]
(4) Creating a new DUN (dial up networking) connection on the laptop and using the mystery modem device just discovered [unknown]
(5) Configuring SOME NUMBER to dial as the connection parameters [unknown]
(6) Connecting
I would think that the phone would accept the incoming 'request' for it to act as a wireless modem, and initiate a gprs connection, and then do some sort of NAT.
Does ANYONE have ANY more information on how this might work?
Is XP required?
GPRS Settings
You need a Serial Cable or an Irda COM Port available. XP is not required. I do Irda on W2k (it also works with XP)
Check this link for Instructions and the Irda-Driver:
http://www.myxda.com/html/HowToUse/XdaII/How to setup Wireless Modem for IrDA.htm
The important thing is to install a Standard Modem over some COM port and use Advanced Settings for your AccessPoint i.e
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","web.one.at","",0,0
You then dial "*99#" (without the quotes)
Fidl
I gave up and bought an aircard!
Where do we stand on the best solutions?
I have the same problem except I am also interested in getting the XDA to act as a wireless modem for circuit-switched data calls (7Kbps pipe).
I first saw the most pertinent information at http://www.xda-developers.com/modem/ but the page is labeled "superseded". As I understand, as soon as we get ROM 3.16.43 or above, all the "intrusive" trick posted on the page originally is obsolete.
My first question is about the "intrusive" trick there. It sure looks like the trick will get the XDA to act as a wireless modem for your laptop to make circuit-switched data calls (consuming minutes, 7Kbps only). Does it get the laptop to make GPRS connection (45Kbps) as well, assuming I subscribe to T-Mobile's data plan ($20/mo, unlimited data under promotion)?
My second question is, once we get a ROM version that gives a "wireless modem" program, can I make both types of data calls? Sounds like yes for the answer.
If so, great. Let's assume so. T-Mobile US is at ROM 3.14.40 ENG right now. In a matter of a month or two, they are going to post the upgrade for Windows Pocket PC 2003. A tier 2 tech guy told me that it will probably come with a ROM upgrade. I feel that the chances are high that that ROM version provides this "wireless modem" program. If so, isn't it true that the upgrade basically converts our XDA's into a Sierra Wireless AirCard 750, and then some? Or I am off track somewhere?
The tech support told me that the AirCard 750 approach calls for a SIM card for the air card. You would have to either open a new line for a new SIM card, quite costly, or eject the SIM card from your PPC and place it into the air card each time you use it, quite a hassle. Hardware capability wise, XDA is just an AirCard 750, and then some. It's rediculous that it was not made as such to begin with. Maybe it was just a matter of development phases to roll out functionalities gradually and we are getting there?
Hello! I´ve got only one problem left with the xda II

Well, there is this remote display application at YORCH.NET
"Remote Display Control for Pocket PC
With the Remote Display Control application, you can display actions on a Pocket PC, including user input, remotely on the display of a desktop or laptop personal computer. This is a great tool for demonstrating the power of the Pocket PC to a large audience. It also allows developers to test their applications for the Pocket PC on a larger screen.
size: 712KB"
I didn't try it yet, it sounds quite interesting for multiple purposes.
Hi there,

i guess you didn't check conent of CD included in box with your k-jam yet. on my CD i've found this document:
ftp://xda:[email protected]_using_i-mate_K-JAM_as_a_Bluetooth_Modem.pdf
this file is also available on www.clubimate.com support site after registration...
Anyone got the KJam / Mini S working over bluetooth with GPRS when connected to a Apple Powerbook?
Thanks,
Actually I followed the instructions of that doc but it still won't work. Maybe it's the stupid bluetooth stack of my toshiba laptop.
I can't see why activesync can't handle this right away. Oh, I can, it's an MS product.
Oh well. I'll keep trying
BTW, Have you killed AS?
i update my bt stack from toshiba web site and it works now.
What do you mean by killing activesync?

RE: Using Wizard as Bluetooth Modem for Apple Powerbook
adambern,
I finally managed to get my K-Jam working as a Bluetooth Modem over GPRS after quite a bit of searching! I can only verify that this will work in OS X 10.4.4 (latest version of Tiger), since I didn't seem to have the options available before I updated Tiger.
Firstly, you will need to download the Generic Mobile Phone Script available from Ross Barkman's excellent homepage: http://www.taniwha.org.uk/. I have attached it here, but you should really visit the site, if only to donate a pint to Ross for his excellent work!
You will also need to know the GPRS settings for your network. Again, Ross can sort you out on his site.
1. Put the Generic Mobile Phone script in the /Library/Modem Scripts folder on your Mac.
2. Open the Bluetooth Setup Assistant, and search for your Wizard.
3. Once found, allow your Mac to pair with your phone. The Mac should then come up with a couple of options. One of these options will be "Use your phone as a modem for your computer", or something along those lines. Tick this check box.
4. Your Mac will now ask for a load of settings. Make sure you enter the phone number as *99#, and enter your username and password as determined from your network.
5. Click OK, and close the Assistant.
6. Open Internet Connect in your Apllications folder.
7. Select Bluetooth, and click Dial.
8. Voila! Your phone should now be working as a modem!
If you have any problems, refer to the notes Ross gives with the scripts. I hope this is of assistance to those of us with a sensible choice in computers .
Many thanks Invisigoth... I'll give it a go later.
Great community spirit.
gosh, i still can't get it to work. i'm running xp though.
windows is trying to dial but then it doesn't work
You are a SAINT........
THANK YOU.
Worked first time for me and at last I have an internet connection from my phone with my Mac Powerbook..............
Again thank you.
Robin
Hallelujah, I finally got it to work.
I have one question though. It looks like that the 115 kbit bt com port speed is the bottle neck in this connection. Is there any way to raise that?
Thanks

Hi
I want to use my XDA2i to connect my laptop to the net....
Any ideas how to achieve this, thinking bluetooth laptop to XDA then use GPRS on XDA to connect.
Thanks
Hi,
Look overhere ftp://xdaupload:[email protected]/USB_modem/ for modem driver & documentation.
Cheers, M
Hi
Thanks for the reply, however, I want to connect my laptop through bluetooth to my XDA and use the GPRS on my XDA to connect to the net.
I need to achieve this without using a USB connection, if I understand correctly the link you supplied tells me how to connect USB modem etc.
Maybe I'm completely misunderstanding. It's all so simple using a Nokia 6230i, plug and play virtually!! (until my company deactivated data calls:-()
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Set the Connection Type to Bluetooth in the Wireless Modem program, then push the start button & make the BT connection to your laptop. Hope it works this way or experiment a little with it pls. I use the USB connection & don't have BT on my PC, so can't try the settings myself.
Regards, M
As I assume that you're using Windows vom Micro$oft, just Pair the two devices (not using 'Wireless Modem').
It will automatically install a Bluetooth-Modem
David
Hi
What type of connection do I need, I can only find a network access connection to my laptop, thats all that is available.
I am using a HP laptop with XP home, its a new one so would imagine everything is in order.
seek and you shall find
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=24383
Thanks for the replies people...
Although I have to admit I'm struggling still....given up on the bluetooth connection and reverted back to USB cable but still I can't connect.
Here's the steps I have used:
Unticked Active Sync allowing USB connections.
Restarted laptop, connected USB cable to XDA and selected Wireless Modem, used the drop down to select USB and selected Start.....
the documentation etlls me that my laptop will go into a plug and play routine of allowing me to install it as a modem but this does not happen.
And yes, I have admin rights on the laptop.
Do I have to do anything with connections/modems because I haven't.
Am I being thick? Not sure but it's driving me to distraction...
start the modem program on your XDA (Start-Programs) and conenct it, windows will ask for a driver. install the driver from ftp. then create a new modem connection in windows. here (in germany) the number windows must call is *99# (for GPRS/UMTS)
Thank you for your patience...
The XDA installed as stated using driver on FTP, great.
Run up IE, tools, options, connections and added a dial up connection called XDA USB Link.(com8)
Settings of which are:
user name2web
passwordassword
untick automatically detect settings
untick configuration script
untick proxy server
Not sure where I'm going wrong but when I dial it errors with...No dial tone detected.
To recap I am dialing with GPRS connected on XDA and the WModem program connected through USB started
Am I missing something?
Can anyone help??????
Please?????
Try running usbmodemdialer instead of DUN by IE, it's in the package on the ftp.
Cheers, M
Hi
OK, I am now using the HTC USB dialer but I'm receiving an error 734 code, which is a PPP issue.
To recap, I am starting Wmodem, connecting to laptop (GPRS off) using a USB cable. Starting HTC USB Modem with APN as Internet & modem as HTC USB modem.
On XDA I get a connection light, then send and receive lights flash before the lot dissapear. The laptop goes through Connecting/verifying/registering then Remote access error 734.
I'm nearly there...
Please excuse my ignorance on this subject
Thanks
Yeah seems like it again :--(
Upload is running to ftp://xda:[email protected]/Uploads/
Regards, M
Hi
Ive done everything as suggested but I'm getting a 680 error, this I believe is a "no dial tone" error.
Please, where am I going wrong?
Thanks
Gary
Frankly I haven't got the slightest idea what's going wrong. It works like a charm with my magician & Windows XP Sp2.
M
Hm how could the line be busy? are you phoning the same time? (always when you try to connect? sorry silly question.)
Are you sure your provider give you GPRS Access? (i don't know any who don't )
did you a google search on this error?
Hi
Yes, I googled it and it appears to be "No dial tone" not line busy....I'm not in a call when attempting to connect.
I've tried every possible combination of settings......usernames and passwords etc....
There isn't any issues with my laptop and updates etc. I am sys admin by day!!! This is just beating the hell out of me. Incidentally my laptop is a HP pavillion zd8369ea, a new one!!! Alpine is running radio 1.04.
Yes, data calls are enabled on my SIM, I can connect perfectly to IE on XDA and mail etc.
Taken down all firewalls etc and nothing....
Help
Thanks
Gary
Follow the instructions here:
http://www.seeo2.com/html/HowToUse/XdaII/How to setup Wireless Modem for Bluetooth.htm
At part 5. the line you need is:
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","mobile.o2.co.uk","",0,0
At point 11. you don't need a user name or password.
Has anyone had any luck with this.
I have instructs that basically say. Pair device. Let it auto discover the com port modem.
Create a dialup using *99#
Dial away.
Problem is it doesn't work. Can see modem etc however can't query the modem and dialup fails quite quickly.
Help
You need to provide more details as to what you did, step by step and also your GPRS service provider if someone has to help more.
I have tried HD with Internet over bluetooth with CDMA. But with GPRS over blutooth i suppose you need to edit the registry to dial the init strings as AT commands. May be someone who actually has done can help you more. Finally in my opinion it is a bit clumsier and also less reliable and more power hungry than using internet access(GPRS/EDGE/3G) from the SIM in the HD.
use the Internet Sharing program on your HD, works better than the dialup option. You'll need to first set up an activesync partnership before you're able to use it though. Good luck!

This answers the question as to why it never worked for me, I may have a tinker later.
