i use to have an XDA before and still have the serial cable, will i be able to use this with the XDA 2 or are the leads ment to be different.
from the roadangel to the XDA 2 i am planning to use the serial cable. with a gender changer.
the roadangel will output data both at 9600bps, 4800bps, any idea which i should select?
thanx!
Holux produce a cable which powers the Road Angel and XDA2 from a single power source, it also connects the RA to the XDA for sending GPS data.
It costs about £25, I use it with Tomtom and it works a treat.
Good luck
The serial cable should work ok with xda1 and xda2.
Oops, sorry missed a bit from my earlier post. Even though the serial cable works with the xda1 and xda2 for connecting to a PC, it doesn't work connecting to the Road Angel on it's own. Not only do you need a gender changer, you also need a null modem cable as well - when it's all connected together you end up with a mesh of cables on your dashboard which just looks a mess and if you are really lucky it might even work.
I must confess I tried all the various cable combinations as described above and didn't end up with any joy, I then contacted Holux - their cable worked straight out of the box. The one thing I would recommend if you decided to go with the Holux solution is to specify the cable lengths to them when ordering as different lengths are required for different cars, I was lucky as the default length worked OK for me but I’m sure this won’t be the same for everyone.
Just for information – I believe Holux actually manufacture the GPS within the Road Angel, hence this is why they produce the cable.
As before – Good Luck
excellent m8 have you got any source for Holux or is it a guy / wesbite / company?
and the model of the lead will do pls
you have been a great help m8!
YOU ARE THE DON, thanx m8, ive found it!

Thank you for any help.

No, not without modifying the cable. Everything is connected to different connector pins on the XDA, relative to the iPaq. The connectors page on this site has all the details.
http://xda-developers.com/connectors
no, you have to modify it
As always the XDA-developers solution works.
I have changed an IPAQ cable according to information on the prementioned page and it works flawless.
Just make sure you:
- have a fine tipped soldering iron
- a steady hand
- patience

Use an ohmmeter (or just a battery and a light) and two VERY finetipped 'probes' (I used two needles  ) and check every pin on the connector against the two pins on each side to see if they have a connection or not. It's a simple but effective way to prevent damage to your XDA just because you overlooked a connection.

XDA developer You are a clever people, all many thanks, shall probe change the cable from iPAQ.
 With many thanks for help!!!!!!
Fredy.
climber i want to modify an ipaq usb cable to use it for synchronization with my XDA II. Can you provide me with some detalis? I don't understand what conectors i need to change from that link. I prefere something like "pin1 to pin3" or something like that.
I finally managed to unlock my XDA, now I can truly say to be a proud XDA mobile owner in Italy! ;-)
[was "Serial cable using craddle: having problem with Manipulator"
http://xda-developers.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=633]
I was too excited to wait for the delivery of a serial cable from the States and I tried to use the cradle circuit (to open it you need a special screw driver to lift the 4 screw hidden underneath the 4 rubbers).
*** IF YOU ARE NOT AN EXPERT DON'T USE THIS SYSTEM ***
you could seriously damage the cradle circuit and XDA!! Not jocking....
I connected the wire of the 9pin rs232 to the beige connector on the cradle circuit as follow (please note that the connection of only the first 3 lines below didn't work for me):
[Con2 is the beige connector, pins are counted form the left facing it]
XDA-----Con2---RS232
2 (gnd)---1st--- 5(gnd)
8 (txd)---4th--- 2 (rxd)
10(rxd)---7th--- 3 (txd)
6(dcd)----2nd--- 4 (dtr)
7 (cts)----3rd----7 (rts)
9 (rts)----5th----8 (cts)
11(dtr)---8th----6 (dsr, dcd)
Note that the last connection really made the difference for me (thanks XDA Dev. Peter Poelman!!).
I experienced problems when using Manipulator with my Notebook, it was just sitting on "scanning" mode looking for the com port...
Using HyperTerminal I could receive from XDA but not able to send command.
I eventually tried Manipulator with my desktop PC and... GOT IT!!! The com port has been found in 4 second, and after having pressed on "unlock" I was UNLOCKED in less then 1 minute!!! Yippiieeeeee!
Still don't know if the problem was:
- XDA with low battery charge
- a false connection on the serial cable
- or a problem with my notebook
But this is not important anymore now ;-)
Thanks a lot to all XDA-Developers for the great job with Manipulator and for this great forum!
Hope this msg will make life easier also for some new XDA user.

Respect !!
You can have problems with rs-232 on laptops for the following reason.
a 'real' RS-232 voltages of 12v (+&-). Some laptops just procude 5V levels and if the other side stricktly implements RS232 it just will not work. To come back to your list: I doubt if it was the battery charge. You could argue wether it was a 'false connection' or a 'problem' with your notebook' but in a way the last two were right.
For RS232 the advice is always to first use it on a desktop system before using a laptop.
It's a great mod and thanks for the description.

@mav2

Yesterday i purchased an XDA II, I have TomTom, and a Garmin GPS Map 76 S.
Garmin unit works perfectly on my Laptop with Navigator software.
While at the store purchasing the XDA2 i also purchased the Serial Cable, Part No AHTX2SCN.
The end of the serial cable and the GPS cable are both Male outputs, but i managed to gerry rig a cable to connect them together.
TomTom shows a few ports, infrared, BT on com6, Serial Cable on Com1 com9, com2, serial on usb.
When i try to use Com1, the port is not available.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this ( i cant see how to disable infrared) or any suggestions as to what GPS receiver to use instead of the garmin.
Thanks.
Go to settings/connections/beams, make sure beams is unchecked. Also you may need to add a null modem adaptor between the serial cable and the xda2 cable, or you can cross over the wires by desoldering , on the serial end swap over lines 2 and 3, in other words desolder 2 and 3, put 3 where 2 was and put 2 where 3 was.
Initially there was nowhere to untick "beams", now there is and it is unchecked, i never unchecked it, and can't explain why it was like this, the XDA has been acting strange though, locking up, being very slow etc.
I will look for a null modem adaptor, and report any success or lack of back here.

Apart from the "beam" issue, you must have a "proper" null modem adapter.
It should work.
It works
Finally i got the GPS to work with some parts from Maplins ( try Radio Shack outside of the UK)
Using the Serial Lead i described above, i purchased the following items from Maplin, the guys there were very helpful, letting me take the follwoing configuration outside to check if it worked.
I purchased the follwoing :-
Low profile 9W Male to Male Gender Changer part number JW57M. I needed 2 of those. (basically two small gender changers)
9 way Null F-F 2m part No VD76. (basically a null modem cable).
Connected them all up, and GPS now works. The resulting lead is a bit untidy / long, but for now i've just used plastic ties to tidy it up a little.
Total cost of the above parts was just short of £15.
Hope this helps someone.
www.maplin.co.uk for online ordering, or 0870 264 6000 so it says on the parts.

You could have got a very tiny male>male null modem adapter from us for $5.90, or a slightly bigger one from Expansys for £2.94 !
You can do this a lot cheaper.
Several possibilities:
- buy a plug for the Qtek @ http://www.gomadic.com/ipconplug38s.html and one for the Garmin GPS @ http://www.pfranc.com and a short piece of shielded wire. You just have to connect 2 wires (Tx from the Garmin to Rx from the Qtek), and this works very well.
- for those who find the connector of the Qtek to small: buy a regular serial cable, cut off the 9 pin connector and solder a Pfranc in place.
There are a lot more possibilities, like powering everything from one source (GPS and Qtek). And price is a lot lower than ready made stuff...
Hi boys and girls,
I'm considering getting the XDA2, mainly i want it for a navigation system, so without using a bluetooth gps unit I imagine i need the backpack right?
So do you remove the camera to clip the backpack on?
Does backpack obscure the bottom mounted port which I would want to use the thumboard for?
backpack enables CF as I understand it, so are there any issues with wifi CF's remaining connected to the w/lan on windows pocket 2003? (I am plagued with periodic loss of connection with my old laptop using a 16bit wifi pcmcia card on XP)
Anyone use a bluetooth gps and do u loose connection much?
Anyone use the thumb board thing and what do you think of it?
Any pics of the thumb-board mounted on the device or the backpack mounted on would be ACE
Cheers
You dont need the backpack to use a gps with xda2, just buy a wired system, it will set itself up on com1, you must make sure that under setting/connection/beams, that the box "receive incoming beams" is not checked. www.globalpositioningsystems.com do a good cheap range of gps modules, any unit that fits xda1 will also work on xda2. As to the bluetooth gps, I have used Fortuna GPSmart and find it to be very good, the one I am using at the moment is the Holus GR-203e but I had to install a patch to get that working, the GPSmart is also usable as a cabled gps so with the cable which is very cheap you can connect to laptop or other non bluetooth devices. You can use the GPSmart as a stand alone unit also, I bought a cable which charges the xda, powers the gps and also carries the data.

Thanks for your reply, I think I'm in need of the backpack in any case because I want wifi
the bluetooth unit you mention that can run as wired sounds good, and how much was that multi charging cable? Cigar lighter effort I assume?
If you just want to charge the gps you get a mini usb lead and one of those usb liger sockets, the cable has a lighter socket included with the y cable., it was less than £20.
Was this the one you meant mate?

The url you posted was invalid, so i tried www.globalpositioningsystem.com and that site didnt look all that hot??
Globalpositioningsystem are one of the best suppliers I have used, that gps on ebay is not the one I use, that is GPSmart. it can be used as a handheld, bluetooth or wired system and is very cheap, runs on 3 x AAA batteries. The cable with lighter adaptor and data/charge cost less than £20. I inadvertently added an "s" to the end of that url.
hey guys. could anyone tell me if there is a specific config of car chargers for the universal? i am planning to buy one from ebay
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Universal-USB...itemZ5815991160QQcategoryZ48674QQcmdZViewItem
it seems to be a universal pda charger plz let me kno if it is fine. also i ll be using it in India. any idea if it ll work there properly ( i am not sure of the earthing method used there). i wud really appreciate it if u cud answer asap.
cheers
I bought one like this (not the same brand but the same idea) and it works fine - I think most newish cars have a standard cigar lighter socket so as long as your car isn't old or from a strange local manufacturer - I imaging that you'll be OK...
I to got one of these from the bay
again different brand but does work a treat the and even charges my motorola headset at the same time to.
The description "universal" is often used to refer to something that connects to a range of devices and models, and does not necessarily refer to the HTC device named the "Universal".
by universal i meant that it seems to work for all usb chargable devices ( as according to the seller). the issue is that most of the pda s in the market hav different power ratings.
I use one as it, work perfectly with your minUSB cable
