Hi, as we'll all end up with an xda2, and they seem set to have built in Buetooth. I thought a thread all about the possitive applications for Bluetooth would be useful.
Can we steer away from the 'why can't it just have wifi' argument and actually discuss uses for bluetooth.
My thoughts are...
Bt gps mouse for the car would be fantastic. allowing you to pass the xda around the car and still have it picking up a signal. even take it outside the car when stopped to plan the rest of your route.
I have a broadband internet connection at home, running from a dedicated server machine, by Bt'ing the server i'll be able to wirelessly surf the net anywhere in my house, that would rock! internet based voice comms in my mobile. guess you could also Bt activesync if you really felt the need, but i tend to charge it at the same time so i'll stilll be plugging a cable in.
Bt headsets could be good. driving along the road and your phone rings etc...
Guess you could Bt contacts and appointments etc
Bt games could be interesting, think theres a worms clone called snails that already does this.
Does anyone know if it'll be able to connect to more than one Bt device at a time? say a gps system and a headset? or my server machine and a headset? Can anyone think of Bt uses that i've overlooked
i hope your house's not so big do not forget BTs range does not go over 10 meters and BT is much more subject to interferences frequencies with other devices than 802.b or g protocol. Even more BT max speed theorically is 2 Mbps, whereas wifi 802.11b is 10 and 802.11g is 54

BT is more secure ok but within a very limited range and brandwidth, perfect for headsets
You can use multiple devices. BT effectively doesn't even give the full 10-meter specified range (unless it is Class II, 100 meter spec). It is very slow with an effective throughput around 700k. It is fantastic for headsets, and still much faster than GPRS. The GPS thing makes me laugh though...both devices need power, so why not just cable them together?!?

has anybody test this combination? it doesn't work very well. The lag (ping) is very high i think about 1s and longer when i phone to a friend. When i use it over active sync cable it works well, same when i use bluetooth AS. I use the last version of the socket driver. Has anybody a idea?

Do you have SKYPE in magician and when is connected via USB you can talk without problem?

skype to skype is bad, skype I asuume is ****ty then also. Maybe it is the ram??
I have a very similar setup running: MDA Compact, Sandisk wifi and newest Skype for PocketPC. Indeed, the time delay is in the order of a second. When connected via the USB cable to my laptop, which also connects to my DSL via wifi, the delay is much less.
I suspect the problem is that the CPU on the Magician is a bit too slow. It is fast enough to run Skype itself, but not quite fast enough to run Skype + wifi device driver + WEP encryption.
At my office where the wifi is not encryptet, PocketPC Skype over wifi indeed seems to have a bit less delay.
I think we just have to pray that the Skype developers manage to optimize their code a bit :wink:
So fed up with Skype on Pocket PC..
I found a new one, just as cheap, will use this for Pocket PC, Stansphone.com, and Skype for PC. The thing about Skype is Skype-to Skype uses less processor power than SkypeOut, which explains why Skype out on a PPC is a disaster
Just downloaded the demo now, this comes with a free NY phone number for calling in too. Not bad, now let's see if the call quality is any good.

Yes, I use this all the time. I'd recommend getting a Bluetooth 100m adaptor. Connect via BT Activesync.
I would recommend wifi rather than bluetooth for networking in the house. It is much faster and far more stable and doesnt need line of sight.
i have a 100m connector for my pc. but my pda can only do 10m... so can i relay something in my room just to get the extra 10m or something? if so how?
bluetooth isn't line of sight either.
if you have the 100m repeater, it shouldn't matter how far the pda can see, the 100m repeater should get the signal into your room or wherever. only one of the devices needs to be strong, not both.

the xda series bluetooth is only 10m
so as far as i know having a 100m bluetooth dongle dont help
because both ends have to be cetified for 100m for it to have a
range of 100m
maybe some repeater would work

Bluetooth doesn't need line of sight either. Performance varies, but is actually better than WiFi in some circumstances. It does not matter that your device can only handle 10m, a 100m dongle will still transmit faster to a further distance, in my experience.
Well from experience and having spent quite a bit of money on setting up bluetooth networks in my home...it sucks bigtime. I now have wireless and have never had a problem.
Rudegear, yes you are correct, although it doesnt sound logical it makes no difference whether you have a 100 mtr adaptor on your desktop, if your phone does only 10 meters it will struggle. I had a 100 meter usb dongle but lost signal in the next bedromm.
The reason I mentioned line of sight is because the signal seems to be drastically reduced when it has travelled through a wall, whereas if it is in the same room it will be ok. WiFi is designed for fast data connection over distance while bluetooth is a low power application that has relatively low data speeds.
i think if i put a usb 100 m in a room upstairs aswell then itl work... i have a crappy comp tht i cud use but is it worth doing... i mean its another £20.. i probably will.. thx fr the help.
WIFI v Bluetooth
We have both running, and my wife and i both using simultaneously the XDAII, we measured manually the speed between, and WIFI was marginally better.
We were both in the room next door. However, we do get better distance from the WIFI rather than the bluetooth.
Both were centralised to the house, and both at the same height (about 1.6m high), and all can reach around the house. Few houses get over 20mx20m, so if you centralise either or, you can get around it easy enough with adequate coverage.
WIFI is generally better as most routers and WIFI units can handle multiple simultaneous access, where as bluetooth struggles.
would bluetooth not loose connection speed as the range inc much more then wifi would ?

I just installed a Bluetooth Access Point DBT-900AP from D-Link (euro 50).
Bluetooth-to-LAN Access Point
Connect it somewhere to your internet router/modem/switch via Ethernet.
The box will get an IP-adress and via Bluetooth PAN-profile, you will have internet access throughout the house (circle of +- 10 mtr. around the access point).
My only problem: the Magician (T-Mobile MDA Compact) doesn't support the bluetooth protocol standard, but out of the box XDA's with the Bluetooth Manager will work.

I own a s200 since last week. My first impression:
improved in many ways in comparison to my old Qtek2020 with WM2003
- better usability with WM5 and the additional buttons
- better power management
- better integration of phone (had problems on my old device with missing calls and missing sound at calls)
- size now so small that I can carry it like a normal cellphone
- speed is OK for my purposes (standard programs plus OziExplorer)
- power drain better than with Qtek2020
Not so good:
- sound at phone calls should be louder
- WiFi works good, but range should be larger (my s200 works up to 10m if there is no wall in between)
- small touch screen more difficult to operate (but I prefer a small device, that I can carry all the time)
I think the s200 will very useful for me (it will be my brain extension ...)

Hi, I'm thinking of buyig a S200, nevertheless I'de like to satisfy some doubts? Is it really as bad as its said with movies and apps like tom tom and route 66? I heard it was slow...
I have the possibility to try it for a few days and then exchange it for a S100 (magician) if I'm not happy with it, but the Wi-Fi is the main reason I'm gonna buy it, so I really need to know...

Try searching the forums for a registry hack, it can be set louder!

Do you use a .G router and do you use maximum power. I use a .G router and I have a connection through walls and everything till about 20 m. My laptop can go further, but still I'm impressed.

No the newest Dopod ROM is fairly fast for everyday uses. For movies I would use some overclocking @240mhz almost everything is as fast as the 416 mhz intel. But for Tomtom that isn't really necessairy, although overclocking will speed up, the starting-up time of the program...
I tried some of the registry hacks regarding the sound level and up to now I don´t found a sufficient setting. But I will invest a little bit more time for playing around.
My WLAN router operates with B/G setting, the s200 with maximum Wifi power. With one wall in between and perhaps 8m distance i got about 20% signal level. But that may be also a problem of my router or the environment.
Are there tools available which show the signal strength of all WLANs around?

The PC version has a nice graph showing connection quality, not sure about the Mini version, but give it a try.
I can overclock to 264 or so ..anything over that blows up (slow down)...Id suggest 264 rather than 240..since I beileve 264 is stable anyhow...however, i use a pretty cool custom rom that may have been configured just for that
Sadly I dont agree with screen size being good..its small and as small things go, leaves out lots of functionality..the processor is SLOWER than the HTC Magician according to Microsoft Tech Team..which means...the smaller you go, the diff processor you use (to make it look fast) yet the OS WM5 uses a bit more resources (as expected) and so the new processor is still ****..oh well..size vs. speed.

Hello.
I have a Qtek 9100 and as i have posted in 9100's thread, all HTC new devices and especially 9100 and S200 have crap wifi.
I have tested many many ppc's and ended up that the signal of wifi in S200/9100 is about 50% less than other devices!
S200 - all-in-one
I used to own an AXIM X5 then after 2years X3 with a separate mobile phone, which i carry all the time together.
Yes the S200 is slow but all functionality works fine (wifi,bt,gprs,msoff,,,etc). i cant ask for more for the size of this.
My question is, does anybody here who owns an S200 have tried overclocking it (omapclock), if yes can you please send me the instruction to do this.

I'm really happy with my S200, contrary to some of you, I have great WiFi reception even trhough walls.
I wardrive a lot and I can connect to hotspots from really far away. I can tell because the SSID broadcast sometimes display the company name and I often realize the building is not near at all.
On the movie watching side, I can see full movies with no OC at all. It really depends on how you encode the movie in the first place.

I just last month purchased a Touch HD (Blackstone) which I've really enjoyed. And I paired it with my Bluetooth headset (Jabra BT5010) which was used to pair with my HTC p3300 Artemis.
Last month, every day my Blackstone’s battery life is just 10~12 hours between charging, even with no call and other usage. I thought maybe 3.8’ screen have drained much power.
Last morning, I happened to turn off Bluetooth function of Blackstone after a full charge. Then I find there is still 62% battery life remaining after 24 hours with average usage. That means the battery life could last for 3 days without Bluetooth turned on.
For sure, Bluetooth drains much power from my handset. But also I don't want to toggle the Bluetooth setting on/off every time I want to use Bluetooth headset? That would significantly cut into the convenience of this item. Is there some advice or is something my Blackstone misconfigured?

You can try to disable beam if you didn't already.
I keep BT always on and with average use my battery lasts about 2 days. I tried several cooked ROMs and battery life seems the same.

Do you mean go to start->settings->connections->beam, and uncheck "Receive all incoming beams."? I've disabled that, but the power is still leaking dramatically.
In "comm manager", there is no item about beam.
(just 7 items I have as following
Airplane Mode: off
Phone: on
Bluetooth: on
Wi-Fi: off
Microsoft Direct Push: off
Data Connection: off
3G: off)
Do anybody have any advice?
