[updated 07-mar] Random Ringtones - nebohodimo Call Surprise - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

The only solution for a random ringtone now is Random Ringtones, MortScript by oblyvaeon. I made a simple application to do just that - randomize your ringtone. It scans your storage card (or any other location you specify) for music files and every time after an incoming call your ringtone will become one of those. Unlike the mentioned script, it does not require to be running all the time, so there is zero CPU and memory usage.
Features of version 1.2.1:
Select many folders to get ringtones from
Exclude some ringtones you don't like in those folders
Download
The program requires Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 3.5. If your device is complaining about wrong .NET version or missing assemblies, [re]install it first. Install only from the site mentioned above, because other packages have been reported as broken.
If something doesn't work, install the test version first and report what happens.
The program is licensed as GNU GPL v3 (free as in freedom), source code is available.

Seems a good idea; in effect what we have here is a ringtone randomiser.
Will try it out and give you some feedback.
WB

This is what I was looking for... in two ways.
a) For a long time I wanted a random ringtone.
b) And recently I want to know how to make apps for WM5 or 6. I know basic programming and i learn easily, i'm interested in making some apps, but how? what tools do you use? Could you explain? Could yoy PM me or email me? or here?
Regards.

.NET and C# is it, and the APIs used are Microsoft.WindowsMobile.Status (for monitoring incoming calls) and basic registry manipulation. I can release the source excerpts or the whole code later, once I clean everything up.

That's all I need thanks.
Well while i'm here, do you know a site or thread which has basic instructions about making a "hello world" app for PPC? Just to get me started.
I don't want to mess your thread, I'll post a new one for this.
Thanks!

This works great, and its only 8kb! Thanks a lot, I've wanted something like this for a while.

Updated it, see first post.

not work
it's a great idea but not work. i reset my htc 3300, install compac netframewor 3.5 and then install the program. the first time, it work but when i change the path and i put autorun the program crash.
i apologise for my english

Can you please post the crash details? A screenshot, or just the error message text.

description
in my first configuration i put 2 songs in the folder "\Tarjeta de almacenamiento\songs\" of the system.
in my second configuration i put 2 songs in the folder "\temp\" of the system.
thanks

Hi, i installed to Storage Card, and got this error:
File or assembly name
'System.Windows.Forms,
Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral,
PublicKeyToken=969DB8053D3322AC',
or one of its dependencies, was not
found.
Cheers
-edit- just tried installing to device instead, same error.

sigc, I will try myself and post back. But you must not select any other folder than WM sees already (SD root is OK, but not sub-folders).
mugglescuop, install NET CF 3.5. In the future, i might rewrite the program without that dependency, but right now it's like that.

Pardon me if this is a stupid question, but how hard would it be to make this program recoginze a subfolder on the storage card instead of just the root? There's already so many other things I must put in the root (all my themes and sms tones etc.) it would be ten times worse if I moved all my ringtones in here too. Especially since many of them have the same names as my SMS tones, just longer versions.

Agreed.

AthenaGirl, can you select those tones you have in a subfolder as your ringtone in Settings-Phone?

i have to have my ringtones in '//windows/rings' usually

To make it clear:
There are several folders Windows Mobile searches ringtones for in. These (usually) are:
\Windows\Rings
\Storage Card\
\Storage Card\My Documents\
Maybe I'm missing something.
As stated in the first post, the program does not copy any files. Therefore, do not put them where you don't see them yourself when selecting ringtone the usual way.
In the next version, you'll be just presented with a choice of where to choose random ringtones from.

oh right ok cheers
Still downloading NET CF 3.5... taking a while on a GRPS connection

sigc, your problem should be fixed now, download the new version.

I keep all mine in \Storage Card\My Documents\My Ringtones and they show up in the settings. In playing with this just now I discovered my SMS tones still appear if I move them from the root of the card to My Documents. You all probably knew this already but I somehow missed it. This cleans up my root a good bit. Now if I could only move those tsk files...

ROMkitchen are out of date..... Who wants to change????

Hello XDA users....
I think you know it all, that the ROMkitchen is a fine application to get our device nearly perfect.
But the ROMkitchen is out of date. This means many applications aren´t not in the actual version. Therefore Auburnham and I thought to update the applications.
The problem is, that the amount of added applications to the kitchen is to big to make this happen by us two. Because of this problem I´m searching for some people, which wants to help.
Another problem is, that you need for this a device that haven´t got installed that piece of software. This means that when you want to help me with Phonext for example, you must have a device without any version of Phonext installed.
So, if you are going to help me make a snapshot of your device with the ssnap - Application.
Install the software.
Make again an Snapshot of your device with the ssnap - Application.
Send these two files to [email protected] with inforamtion about the program you have installed and the exact Version you have installed.
When I´ve got analyzed the two files i will reply to you with a wishlist of files that have been created on your device. After sending me the files, i can update the kitchen....
IF there are any quesions or anything else, feel free to contact me....
Regards
Stefan
Good Idea :
I'd be happy to contribute.
Tell me which application you want me to install and I'll do it provided that I find the procedure (that I've seen being posted elsewere in this forum).
NB : I'm using XDA I with a Frenchy 3.16 and be stuck with it  ; so there is no chance for me to re-build a new a geniun 3.16 Rom again.
My XDA is all up and running.
I've overcome my Language FRA error message after purchasing a SD card reader and loading the ROM through the bootloader. 8)
Now, I'm about to install ttn 3 on my XDA. Do you want list it in your kitchen ?
What do you need exactly ?
I would be happpy to help. I am a regular user of your site and appreciate the effort that has been put into it.
I understand the effort needed to keep things working and up to date.

I'm in!!
Just let me know what you need and when and I will maker every endevour to help.
Thanks for all you do

I don't want to make this any more complicated than it is, but for some programs, it just doesn't make any sense to install to the XDA memory. Most of the media players and "Misc" programs just take up too much unnecessary device memory when they would work just as well on the SD Card (if that's available).
The problem is that those huge programs require just a few small files to be placed on the device itself. So after installing a few of these types of programs, you've used up a lot of device memory from these small files, even though you installed the program to your SD Card.
Is there a way to alter the kitchen a bit to allow cooking of the necessary device files only, and allow the user to later install the program to the SD Card (being careful not to overwrite the files in ROM with files in RAM)?
For instance, with the TomTom program, if you start with a clean ROM and SD card, take a snapshot, then install the program to your SD card, then take another snapshot, you could determine what files need to be on the device, and what files don't need to be on the device, and allow users to either cook the entire program or just the necessary files in the ROM. (Note: This is a good example of a run-on sentence). Would this be a difficult feature to add to the kitchen?

Maybe the esiest Option is adding a new Select Point for the kitchen like "misc", "System Tools", "Phone" ....
This means having the programs double in the kitchen, but how cares.
I don't know exactly, but when you install a program to the SD-Card, could you select the part where to place it?
If yes, this could be a big problem. Many of the programs store the path in the registry.
If no, i could also provide a ZIP-file, where the rest of the programfiles are in, hust to unzip to the Storagecard.....

I believe this really depends on (1) how well the program was written, and (2) if you can install the program with CabInst (i.e. has a cab installation).
For example, I try to keep my SD Card organized and tidy so if I use CabInst I install the program to an appropriate folder on the SD Card. If I have to install the program from the desktop, I install the program to the SD Card root, then try to move the program to an appropriate folder and update the shortcut. Most of the time this works without even changing any registry entries, but sometimes it doesn't. Two examples from the above list of applications are AOL Instant Messenger 2.0 and Pocketmind PocketMusic 3.0. To function correctly, they both need to be in their original installation folders on the SD Card.
But perhaps the best solution would be to have an associated .zip file to go on the SD Card, as you suggested.
Shawn
Now the kitchen should be up 2 date again.
Only missing is PocketConsole and the Part "Software that needs to register"
So happy cooking and again Thx a lot to all users that helped me.....
Stefan
A Windows-way for cooking a ROM would be great for two reasons: 1) Don't hassle your server with lots of traffic and 2) Practical. Advanced users could cook a ROM without having a PC with Unix.
For example I tried cooking the Spanish version of the ROM and not all the programs I chose were installed and the worst thing is that the boot logo was just garbage, it was showing program code on the screen as a logo

Marton

Ok. Fixed the problem with the bootscreen.....
Tried also adding as much application, and all have been installed.
Can you tell me, what files / programs are missing?
No one else told me that there have been a problem wirth this ROM. I think it's because of the situation that most of the useres are using WM2003 ROMS....
You can also use the kitchen under "Windows" just have to set up a Cyguin environment on your system....
Also i didn't know how many Kitchen's are implemented by other users, but mine one is the only "official". You can't believe that everyone would be able to set it up.......
Stefan
Thanks Stefan!!!!!!
Now it seems to work but if EzWAP is selected, it throws a Log error when trying to cook...
Cheers,
Marton
P.S.: Do you know if a Spanish WM2003 exists?
Edit: This is the error:
Cannot fit files in given sections
Error splitting files
Just cooked a ROM... I selected the "Windows Mobile XDA" Boot Screen and now it is not garbage anymore but now it shows mirrored and upside down...
Any ideas?

Lousy Bloated Microsoft Crap Again .NET Compact Framework v2

Hi
I just found a piece of software that claims to backup WM5 contacts it is 'ns contacts backup' from http://www.nyxbull.net/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownloaddetails&lid=10
Anyway, I have had to install .NET Compact Framework v2.0, another 'Microsoft Bloater' that forced me to remove programs from memory to install it as it wanted nearly 6MB of main memory.
Anyway I have it installed now, do I need to keep it on my Hard Drive? This lousy piece of software installs just "one 5MB CAB file", yet it takes 91.0MB of Hard Drive space, and demands over 130MB to install itself, all for a 5MB CAB file.
Does anyone know which CAB it actually installs, I could not make out the full name on my Phone during install?
I was just wondering, after Hard Reset can .NET Compact Framework v2.0, be reinstalled by a local CAB file on the storage card, rather than using this bloated installer again?
Thanks

It's Micro$oft - what did you expect?
Sorry I can't answer you question regarding cab name since I am avoiding .NET CF like fire.
I am sure though that if you find the cab you can use it to install after hard reset.
Try this:
Start the installer, while ActiveSync asks you if to install to default location go to ActiveSync folder on your PC (probably in program files) and look for a cab (any cab) it should be there, or at least an *.ini file that contains the path to it (maybe the cab is in temp folder).
As for backing up contacts, there is a simple and painless way that doesn't require any installation.
In the built in file explorer select "show all files" option. Then in the root of the device you will see a file named 'pim.vol'. Just copy that to your SD.
Also I read that the new version of .NET CF 2.1 lets you install most of it on SD to save memory, but like I said I didn't try it and I don't recommend it either.

Thanks for that, the contacts were the only thing stopping me Hard Resetting and reinstalling. I have spent the past few weeks installing and uninstalling trying different software and settings to get the phone the way I want it. Now I have everything, I can reset and install everything fresh, that should then be my phone finished, until something else catches my eye.
Sorry forgot to say, so what is the purpose of Outlook with relation to this phone?
As I said, it does not pick up the phone as a device or drive, and activesync says it cannot be used for backing up contacts, so what purpose does it serve?
Seems pointless to me, would have been better if Microsoft built in some proper contact management software, after all this device was designed for business use.

The fact that ActiveSync synchronizes contacts between the device and OutLook means that your contacts ARE backed up. Well that may be how they (M$) see it any way.

Thanks
Hi again
I have been doing some more digging and I have found that the CAB required is 'NETCFv2.wm.armv4i.cab', this CAB is 2.13 MB (2,240,512 bytes), so Microsoft requires over 130 MB to install itself, and hogs 91.0 MB (95,473,664 bytes) of Hard Drive space for a 2.13 MB CAB.
I found this info on http://blogs.msdn.com/netcfteam/archive/2005/10/11/479793.aspx
To save everyone the trouble I had, I tried uploading the CAB but for some reason it is not being accepted on this post, all I am getting is sending request to forum, nothing is happening. If it is wanted I will try again later.

Why are my posts being sent twice?
I only submit once.
Little explanation about ActiveSync and Outlook:
Your device doesn't appear anywhere as a separate ... anything.
You get a folder in file explorer that lets you browse the device, but that's it.
As for Outlook, everything that is in there and you choose to sync is copied to the Outlook on the phone and viceversa.
You can choose to sync contacts, appointments, mail, notes and tasks. You can choose how far back the device will save mails and appointments to save space. You can also sync directly with an exchange server if you got one.
So just to be clear, you sync the stuff you got, there is no separation.

How to group cabs in one cab?

Is possible to group several cabs in one cab?
I want it to save in the Extended Rom of my TyTn, so that when I do a HardReset, automatic it starts to install all the modifications of registry and some programs that I have in several cabs from the pocket, without need of pc.
I search on the forum, but I don´t find any solution.
Thanks
Well first off, if you use the autorun.exe that already exists in the extended ROM and modify its configuration file (the name may be different for different devices, but it is usually a plain text file) you can get it to install several cabs in sequence.
Combining cabs is not always possible unless you are the one who created them in the first place.
Get a program called CE Cab Manager. It will show you everything that a given cab includes and let you edit it. As long as it's just files and registry settings there is no problem stuffing them all in one cab.
But if a two cabs contain a setup.dll there is no way of combining them without knowing exactly what that DLL does (it could be anything) and thats almost impossible (unless you can read ARM assembler well).

what levenum said is correct... so the best thing for you to do is to edit the config.txt file in your extended rom to have them install... HOWEVER if the cabs you are using arent digitally signed then they wont install using that method, you would need to disable the security first... Since no one has a signed disable security cab that works with the tytn the only option would be to do this on a hard reset; soft reset before the customization, when it boots run the tweak program to disable security, then go to the windows directory and manually launch the preautoconfig.exe
software alternatives
tristan1412, you can also use a software dedicated to this task.
check spb airsetup (www.spbsoftwarehouse.com, i'm not sure if it allows more then one cab), or even better airwizard (http://www.teksoftco.com/index.php?section=airwizard)
the advantage of these programs is in my opinion the compression. then you also get several options like readme/eula (with airwizard you have spash image support and even sd card output support - that creates autorun content for the sdcard)
hope this helps

HTCustom 1.8 cab

Ok, apologies if this is a dumb question from a relative newbie.
I found a thread to download "HTCustom 1.8 cab" (by Shadowmite), and need some help.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=316416
1. It's a year since it was posted, so is it still valid and a recommended download? I have read that amongst other things it will allow me to not have sim contacts listed as well as phone contacts, as well as improve the volume of incoming calls, so I am keen to try it out, as long as there is absolutely NO RISK FACTOR (I can make do without it!).
2. HOW DO I INSTALL IT? I save it to my desktop. It's a zip file which when opened presents me with the 3 files "HTcustom.000", "ooocab90.001", and "setup.xml". What do I do now???
Apologies, but I've always used activesync to install cabs so am not sure what to do in this case!
Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If it is .cab so just copy it to your PDA and install it there.. don't extract the .cab
Hi, thanks for the reply.
Like I say, it's saved on my desktop as a zip file which when opened presents me with the 3 files "HTcustom.000", "ooocab90.001", and "setup.xml".
So... what part of it do I copy and where exactly in my pda do I put it? In My documents? On the Storage card?

It's not a zip, it's a cab, just that you have cab files associated with your archiver. Just copy the file to the device and tap it.

Doesn't matter for copying, install it to your device though!
I've installed it, it did warn me that it may not work with Windows Mobile 6.1, and it seems it doesn't. Doesn't work on my device anyway, whatever the reason...
When I attempt to select any tweaks and save it, it just says error and asks me to quit the program! I'll contact Shadowmite and see if there is a WM6.1 version.
All I really want is to NOT have SIM contacts appear as well as phone contacts (so suprised there is not an option.. what's the point in having duplicates???)
Also, apparently there is a fix out there that improves the volume of incoming calls?
Advice anyone?

It must have something to do with Framework. Do you have it installed?
As for the sound issue, do you have WOW SRS installed? If not, what's your ROM version?
Regarding SIM contacts, here!

S2 Mini Config Applications

Hello, everyone!
Today I want to present...
History... (Not so important, though...)
Since the creation of S2U2 1.30 there were a lot of posts like "How to change 'slide to unlock' text, S2U2SettingsPlus doesn't work!"
That's why I wanted to make a good little configurator.
After a day of work, a night of sleep, a day of rest and a night of work I've realized my wish. The <SATT> was born.
Mmmm... that's a lie. <SATT> was born about three or four days ago, it was named "S2U2 Translator". <ESC> was born today, as a little project for me to rest.
What does <SATT> stand for? <ESC>?
<SATT> - S2 Advanced Translation Tool
It comes in two editions: SATT4PC and SATT4PPC.
<ESC> - Easy S2U2 Configurator
What do they do?
<SATT> is an ultimate tool for S2 Apps translators. It is designed for easy lang.ini files editing. Works not only with S2U2, but also with S2V and S2P files.
<ESC> is a tool for everyone, who wants to change 'slide to unlock' text into something else.
What are the requirements?
<SATT4PC> needs .NET Framework 2.0
<SATT4PPC> and <ESC> need .NET Compact Framework 2.0. It was designed for WM5-WM6.1, and wasn't tested on PocketPC2003. If there are any bugs on such an OS, I can't help you.
What application were your programs done with?
MS Visual Studio 2008 Team Edition
Where do I post bugs?
Here!
What is Otaku DAN?
This is me. To tell you the truth, this is the name for my future site, but it isn't complete... Maybe I'll tell you, when it will be running...
NB: My applications won't do any major harm to your PPC. The worst case will be lost lang file...
And the last one: every my app inserts comment lines into lang files. They won't do any harm, 'cause S2 Apps ignore them.
And now the really last one: Don't thank me. Thank A_C for his marvelous applications!
History of fixes:
<20-10-2008 03-30> Fixed Localized Program Files Folders in <SATT4PPC> and <ESC>...
<20-10-2008 23-20> Updated <ESC> to restart iLock2.exe automatically.
<21-10-2008 22-40> Updated <SATT4PC>, removed some unnecessary functions.
i tried your Satt4ppc. doesen't work :says i dont have installed any S2 app on internal storage. thats wrong, all S2 apps are on my internal storage?
mmm... What is the path to them?
\Program files\S2U2\
\Program files\S2V\
\Program files\S2P
?
OK, now I know what to do...
There will be an update in 30 min.
I haven't taken localized folder names into account...
Sorry...
Major Update
Now It should work with all the localized folder names.
BUT! .NET CF Framework doesn't have a Special path variable for Program Files, so I've tricked my app by cutting it from startup path.
So, it is critical to have SATT under %Program files%/OtakuDAN/SATT and ESC under %Program files%/OtakuDAN/ESC... so, use CAB installers...
It doesn't matter if these apps are installed on internal storage or storage card...
Is .NET on WM like it is on PCs, where you need to have specific versions for the required application? That is, one still needs to install .NET framework 2.0 for your application even though there is already .NET 3.5 installed?
Thanks!
Very useful your applications, thank you very much for sharing your work.
It works fine.

If you can't work with it on your device, I can easily convert it to .NET CF3.5
BTW, my device has CF3.5 too, and all the errors I've got when I debugged these apps said that they are running on CF3.5.
The ESC app doesnt work for me. I can get in and change the values, it creates a new lang.ini and saves the old one but none of the text changes. Im using a 700WX and S2U rev 1.30. Update to 1.32 help??
It is necessary to restart iLock2.exe for changes to take effect...
I'll update <ESC> today for it to restart iLock automatically. I figured out that it will be the best option.
Esc works
Thank you!
At the moment i've tried ESC only and it took me 30/40 secs to do everything, from install to changing effects.
The right things to do:
1)Install the .cab you need (Esc setup in this case)
2)Go to programs folder (for many people "Program files") and click on ESC
3)Write the words you want to appear on the s2u2 an on the s2a
4)Save,exit and click on ilock, it will stop the s2u2.
5)go to s2u2 settings and open it,save and close it and you're done.
Now you've got the new text on your jewel!

Thanks for a guide, I was so tired to write something like "How to use"...
Now, some additions to your guide:
2) You can go to Start Menu/Programs/Otaku DAN/ESC as well
4) You can stop here. iLock will be restarted automatically, if you have the latest build ^___~
Everything is really easy, that's why this application is called EasyS2Config...
You're right, it's easier and quicker than my explanation!
Thank you again
I always like to have my name in my unlock text, just in case some kind soul would return it to me, it's right there as the first thing they'll see.
Worked well and very easy, thanks!
Looks pretty cool...I will check this out later, good work!!
s2 Mini Config Application don't work
Hello excuse me but my english is verry light.
i've just installed Satt4ppc and wen i want to use it, i've the message:
critical error;
You haven' installed any s2 Application onto internal storage. this configurator works only with intelnal storage.
Bur S2U2 is installed on my device.
I don't understend???
Thanks to help me
There was an exactly same problem some posts ago (be sure to read first page of this topic).
1) S2U2 or another S2 app should be located on the internal storage in a default location:
%program files%/S2U2 or %program files%/S2V, etc.
2) SATT should be installed in that %program files% folder to be under %program files%/SATT
This is due to localized %program files% folder which name can't be received by any means (Is it a Microsoft bug?)...
Why is it so difficult? Well, I've made these apps just for myself and didn't have any intention to release them to the public, but my friend told me to do so. Now I've lost my source files, so if I want to do something with SATT or ESC, I should rewrite it all...
Completely rewritten SATT?
Well, I haven't posted here for ages.
I haven't translated S2U2 since this March, so there was no work on SATT.
Now SATT is renamed to S2TT ("Slide 2" Translation Tool) and has v.2 flag.
Application is completely rewritten, it shows untranslated strings, and it requires .NET Framework v2.0
S2TT²: View attachment S2TT.zip (v2.0.1.2)
If anyone wants to translate this app (just to mention), you can use this English file: View attachment English.zip . this is .cs file (Language class for S2TT).
If there are any errors, you can post them here.
All other applications are DISCONTINUED.
thanks! thanks! thanks!
Great Work!
Thanks!
here there is Italiano.cs for you!
I hope that it's correct!
Sorry for my bad english
thanks for translation
thx, millo1978!
I've recompiled S2TT, now it has 3 languages (english[default], russian[mine], italian[yours]).
I've also corrected a minor programming bug in my source code, it won't be visible in the application. I hope your Italian translation is correct, 'cause I don't know Italian. Nevertheless, thx for your work.
